Get dizzy transitioning to standing poses? Try exhaling instead of inhaling on your way up!

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 09:17 AM PDT

I tend to get dizzy and see stars when I transition to standing due to low blood pressure. I was in a Zoom class the other day when the teacher randomly said "If you get dizzy when standing, exhale instead of inhale." Mind. Blown. I haven't felt dizzy since I tried this method. It's so simple, yet so effective! Hope this helps!

Hi everyone, I hope this is allowed and not breaking any rules. I started a new sub called r/SelfCareQuotes to share self care visuals, affirmations, reminders, inspirational quotes and related material. With a yoga therapy background I like to use visuals, pics and small quotes etc as motivational aids to remember that self-care, healing and love are important ❤️ Please feel free to join!

Question about a student/teacher here in the US on visa, wants to teach yoga

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 06:44 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I am posting this here hopefully for an answer or redirection where I can find one! I have a friend from my yoga studio who is here in the US on a work visa. She just completed teacher training here, however her current employer sponsors her for one visa (H1b) therefore she can't have another job, even if it is teaching one weekly yoga class. She is even willing to volunteer her time and teach yoga for free at the studio but she is afraid it would look like she is taking the job of someone who could be compensated, and also doesn't want that to affect the studio representation if that were the case.

Can anyone give any insight to the situation, if you've encountered similar experiences or know anywhere to direct me for info on the matter?

    Thanks!

    Hip issues ?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 06:38 PM PDT

Hey everyone I have a question. So I love working out, running, lifting weights, and just staying active. Past couple months I've gotten into stretching pretty seriously and yoga because I started getting some hip popping and hip impingement from years of soccer and mixed martial arts..

So I have a question, do you guys believe that running everday can make me go back wards when my current goal is trying to get really flexible so my hip feels better ? Everytime I run I love it, but I feel stiffer and somedays my hip feels worse .

My goal right now is to get flexible and no longer have hip pain. Do you guys think I should just do mobility work, body weight exercises, or just stick to yoga for a while till it gets better ?

Can anyone recommend some good sequences I can print?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 06:06 PM PDT

We camp often and I'm trying to get in the habit of yoga every day, even when we're camping. The trouble is I don't have Internet access when we're camping, so I need to be able to print or somehow access sequences offline. Can anyone recommend any good websites or books with this?

I've been practicing on and off for years, but it's been a while since I practiced regularly, so something with notes about how to transition between poses would be ideal!

    Thanks!

Finding a Yoga Partner for my Mom

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 03:15 PM PDT

Hey, new to this sub, hope this is appropriate to post.

Since quarantine started, I've been getting my 60 year old mom into yoga. She's never done it before, and we take a weekly lesson with an excellent teacher over zoom. It's all very restorative, simple yoga, and she really enjoys it and the teacher. At some point in the near future, I'd like to stop taking it with her (it's not my pace, and I'd like to spend my time/$$ on other things, though it's been great to way to spend time with her and help her get into yoga).

The issue is, it's just us two in the class, and I know my mom won't continue on alone. We've posted on Facebook to try to find a person or two to take the class with her, but it's a very specific kind of class. Our yoga teacher has even done some outreach, but to no avail. I'm sure somewhere out there there's someone, even a couple someones, who would love to take a (very affordable) weekly yoga class for seniors, but I'm not sure where else to search.

Hence why I'm here. I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the direction or offer any advice of where to ask/search? Any help greatly appreciated!

    Handstand Practice with Double-jointed Shoulder

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 04:33 PM PDT

I've been practicing handstands facing the wall and can do 2 sets of 10-20 seconds upside down, but after that my shoulder kind of slips a little out of the socket unless I press really hard. Any advice for this specific case? Or should I just practice normally rest/stop when my shoulder starts slipping?

How long did it take you guys to do flows by yourself?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 11:58 AM PDT

I'm new to the practice and I've been doing the Yoga with Adrienne challenge (I'm at day 23), and I heard that the 30th day is doing a flow by yourself, which made me think what could I do and I couldn't imagine doing a 20-30 minutes flow by myself without any visual assistance maybe 15 minutes?.

So I was wondering, how long it took for you guys to do flows by yourself outside of yoga class.

Yoga poses for the lower legs and hips.

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 03:19 PM PDT

Hi all! New to the sub but I've been practicing yoga for about six months now. I've enjoyed it a lot and want to improve.

However, some areas of my body are still stiff/tender being new to yoga. Specifically my calves, the back of my knees, and most of my hip joints.

What are some poses I could work on to help these areas not be so stiff/tender? Thanks!

    Dealing with post yoga emotion

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 06:02 AM PDT

I've seen lots of posts discussing emotions that come up during practicing - but how do you guys deal with the aftermath? This morning, I did a 1hr yin yoga video and was crying on my mat, feeling super frustrated, then calm the next minute... basically just all over the place. It's now two hours later and my emotion are still heightened and honestly exhausting. How do you deal afterwards with whatever game up while you were on your mat?

ETA thank you for such thoughtful, considerate and genuine answers - long time lurker of this community and it's so nice to feel a little connected :)

    Lotus Pose & Muscular Legs

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 12:26 PM PDT

I tried looking through the FAQs, but I didn't find anything specifically answering my question.

Would the thickness/musclarity of my legs prevent my ability to do full lotus?

I want to go back to the gym and be able to continue to build muscle, but I also don't want to restrict myself from being able to do certain poses.

I've read that the size of the legs WILL determine your ability, but I've also read conflicting sources that say hip flexibility is the determining factor (or is it both?).

I just wanted some insight on if I shoulr continue to lift weights and go heavy, while still being able to pull of advanced poses later down the line.

    Home Practice Environment

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 09:45 AM PDT

Although I miss my studio, I've been utilizing the wiki here to find awesome videos and resources for my at home practice. (Thanks so much, love that there's so many videos without the music so I can play my own)

I miss the environment of the studio, though, and so I try to setup my space to get into the mindset before practice.

I'm wondering what touches you add at home to make your space more relaxing, or to help get into the mindset before practice.

I've found I enjoy music such as drums or nature sounds to listen to rather than the Wooomwoomwom electronic white noise sound that seems to make up the majority of yoga/meditation music I find. (Hopefully that makes sense...)

Right now, I turn music on, light incense, turn off the bright lights, light some candles and use soft lighting sources, then lay out my yoga props. My props are all in colors and designs I really love so it gets me excited to get started.

What do you do in your home to make the environment peaceful? What items, sounds and scents do you enjoy or use to elevate your home practice?
