[COMP] Practicing my crow to chaturanga transition

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:58 AM PST

[Comp] Didn't want to do anything today. So I just kinda mostly shut my eyes and went with it. Too much work not enough play.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 07:09 AM PST

[COMP] Today is my 50th consecutive day, a lifetime first. Closing the day. This is the messiest, most “imperfect” practice I’ve done in my lifetime. Yet, also feels the first time I am really practicing. Has been transformational. Sharing here, I set the intention to day 100. It is new moon too <3

Video games made me like yoga the most.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 10:31 AM PST

I've been suffering from dysthymia (persistent depressive disorder) for almost 18 years now. I never liked exercise and I think it's primarily due to lack of motivation and having no reason to do it at all (and my condition only worsened the need to do so).

I enjoy playing video games all day ever since I was a kid (since it was the only hobby I liked and I hate all types of sports) and so I consider myself someone who currently lives a sedentary lifestyle.

I have tried lifting weights at home and HIIT, but never really got to commit to any routine, because I actually HATE routine the most. I hate reminding myself what I have to do everyday just to stay healthy (or do the bare minimum just to be healthy or whatever that means) and the lockdown only made me stay in bed longer now that I work at home.

However I have tried surfing and hiking and really enjoyed them a lot. Probably because I liked traveling and it greatly surprised a huge introvert like me with limited social battery will actually get addicted to the ocean and nature. But then again, the lockdown made it impossible to travel.

One day, I stumbled upon this yoga workout minigame in the game GTA V. Having little to no interest in yoga, I decided to try it for the shits and giggles. Ironically enough, I enjoyed doing yoga not just once, but I felt like doing it everyday.

I'm not sure if it's because my condition is improving due to the anti depressants I'm taking, but yoga helped me a lot in discovering things about myself I never thought I knew or would like (especially about exercise). I realized how much I needed to improve my balance and flexibility, and how important it was for me to maintain even just a little physical activity in order to improve my vocal energy (I'm also a musician who likes to sing the same way as Sam Smith).

Who would've thought years of playing video games would lead me to an exercise I ACTUALLY like doing. Now I feel like I'm in a good start and would like to improve more on how to be physically fit and learn more about different types of yoga (and other types of exercises that I might like as well). Hopefully, I could find the right exercises that will benefit me in the long run.

tl;dr Sedentary lifestyle for 20 years, depression, video games and no exercise at all. Discovered yoga in GTA V, now in love with yoga EVERYDAY.

Something tells me I've been favoring my right leg.

I did a wheel pose properly, was able to hold it, and didn't have any pain!!!!

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:46 PM PST

I've been working on doing a proper wheel pose this past week and I was having some issues with shooting back pain, and then I just wasn't able to pull myself up at all. I can't remember if someone here mentioned this or if I read/watched it online but I was thinking a lot about the tip of pulling myself up using my hips and core alone with my arms. It worked!!!!! Now to continue with my never ending quest of trying to achieve a crow pose!

Breakthrough: what is yoga? Is 15min enough?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 02:57 PM PST

What is yoga? Normally, I keep that in the back of my mind. Not today.

Each of us has a different understanding and perception of what yoga is exactly (for them).

And for a long time, I have used to ~1h long (or longer) yoga classes. I could not imagine spending any less time than that. And when I saw a video on Youtube of 10-20min yoga classes I was puzzled - how can anyone in their right mind make so short a yoga class? I just could not understand it. What's the point of it? How can you take so much out of it without losing the value?

Now I have been experimenting with short yoga sessions for productivity and morning routines and I have to say that I have a new understanding of what yoga is. And what is more important - I am comfortable with rolling out my yoga mat even if I have only 10-20min of time to spend for practice.

Hope this makes sense. Have a magical day! 🐝💝

Advanced yogis: any tips on getting into headstand without the wall?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:52 PM PST

Hi! So far i have been practicing getting into headstand by throwing my legs to the wall first then extending them into headstand. Now I'm trying not to use the wall and start in headstand with bent knees but i'm finding it really hard to tilt the pelvis and get my feet to lift off the floor. Any tips you can give me? Maybe my core is not strong enough? Thank tou!

Hamstring stretches hurt my lower back?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:05 PM PST

I have been practicing yoga for a couple of months now, and I still am struggling with some of it - like I need to bend my knees a little in order to touch the floor in a simple forward fold. Anyway, every time I try a pose which is intended for stretching my hamstrings (forward fold, Rag doll, seated forward fold etc) I end up with lower back pain. Is this normal? I don't want to keep doing something wrong and end up with a long term injury. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!

So I'm a pretty fit person but I'm just coming off of hernia surgery and a bout with tendinitis of the Achilles (not fun).

What are your thoughts on using Yoga for recovery from these types of injuries.

    Getting randomly emotional during yoga

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 07:16 AM PST

I've been doing yoga on and off for years but have been embracing a daily practice recently. For the first time, I was randomly overwhelmed with emotion during my yoga and began sobbing. I'm just curious about others' experience with this or any other information you can share.

If it's relevant, I was in an extended child's pose, stretched to the side when it began.

Advice for building up to reverse prayer pose

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:39 AM PST

I recently injured my left shoulder and have been looking into yoga poses for shoulder mobility/flexibility to strengthen my shoulders to prevent another avoidable injury. The problem is, whenever I try to reverse prayer pose I can barely get my hands at the finishing position and usually my fingers interlace and then I start getting forearm/hand cramps. Any advice?

    Yoga International is scammy?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 04:04 AM PST

So, I'm not the one that has been scammed here but im trying to help the person (M) who has been.

Firstly, at no point did M sign up for yoga international however the amounts have been coming out of their account as a POS for a while now. They decided to destroy their current card, report it as damaged and got a new one with new card number but the amounts are still coming out. We cannot login to the site to end the membership as again they never signed up and when looking online for people who may have had a similar issue i find a wave of fake looking reviews at 5 stars and another wave of 1 star reviews calling them out on their scammy services.

Any help would be grand and take this as a warning not to use their free trial as people report they're still charged 2 months fee even if they cancel their membership in the given time.

    Pigeon pose

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 12:25 AM PST

Would anybody be able to share some tips on how to perfect the pigeon pose? I really struggle with getting my knee parallel to my mat, keep my foot up to meet my elbow and my my hip down. I find this one of the most difficult poses to get into correctly and not sure what I am doing wrong so any tips would be appreciated.

    Flexibility help???

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 02:42 AM PST

I've always been super flexible in my hips and hamstrings, i've had my spilts on both sides for years (i've danced and been in cheer my whole life) and found that when I started yoga I could get myself into pretty weird positions.

The only thing I struggle with is forward fold, especially when seated. I can sit with my legs flat and back straight but as soon as i reach for my toes I get a cramp like ache throughout both of my legs, different from normal stretching pain (believe me i know what that feels like). I then start to get pins and needles throughout my legs. I'm not sure if it's a nerve issue, but when doing single leg fold I can get all the way down flat with no issues!

Anyone that could possibly help explain why I my body doesn't work that way or how I could work towards getting better would be great!

    Studying yoga in India

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 06:16 AM PST

Hey everyone, I've been thinking I want to study yoga or do YTT in India sometime when things open. Has anyone done this and has a reputable source? I don't want to go to some inauthentic resort trying to pray on rich Westerners. Let me know what experience you guys have!
