Minor but mind blowing knowledge Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:34 PM PDT I've been doing DownDog since quarantine which has kept me surprisingly consistent in my practice. I've never stuck to any one physical activity like I've done with yoga the past two weeks. Anyway! I decide to explore the "Journey" option, which was a little daunting due to its committal nature. In there, I clicked on Vinyasa - and my mind was blown because the narrator explains the moves rather than just shows you how to do them. I never knew that Cobra pose uses back strength and not arm strength hence why it's important and not as trivial as it looks. I also never knew that in Up Dog your KNEES SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHING THE MAT! My arms actually felt different after this measly 16-minute practice. I'm shocked at how such small details made a big difference!! Here's to us Yogis. May this quarantine Yoga journey bring great things. [link] [comments]

I have been getting so frustrated during practice I started crying Posted: 06 Apr 2020 08:21 PM PDT I'm pretty new to yoga and was practicing twice a week for about 4 months. I was going to local classes as well as classes at my university with my friends and was very happy, probably the happiest I've ever been. I was getting much needed exercise, stretching in ways that help my kind of broken body (16 years as a soccer goalie and you get many "problem areas"), and the calming and reassuring nature of yoga really helped start to heal me mentally. This is all until quarantine started. I haven't left my house in almost 3 weeks (and obviously I will continue to stay home as much as possible because #flattenthecurve), but have been continuing to practice by joining video calls of my classes from university and using an app. I'm not knowledgable enough to design my own practices but I'm fine with that. Basically, my issue is that since quarantine started, I feel like I lost a lot of the progress I was making in terms of strength, flexibility, and mental state. Today I got so frustrated that I started crying during the practice and then really sobbing during shavasana, not only because I wasn't physically doing as well as I was, but also because I was getting so upset over something that is only supposed to bring me happiness and health. I know I'm taking my practice too seriously and that the whole point of practicing is to improve, but I feel stuck and trapped, not only in my house, but also in my own head. I'm also certain some if not most of this frustration is from moving back home and having to deal with the family after living on my own for a very pivotal part of my life (like university). Thank you for reading if you got this far. I guess I just am here asking if anyone has felt frustration like this before and had this happen during "public" practice, and how you overcame it. TLDR: I've been very frustrated while practicing lately and I feel like it's holding me back from improving my practice. Any advice on how to keep morale up when your feeling stuck/are frustrated with your progress? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Apr 2020 02:58 PM PDT I'm a 26 year old male, I do so weight lifting and normal fitness already. I've been highly interested in yoga, and don't know where a good place to start is. I know YouTube has plenty of beginner stuff, but, I would like actual advice on where to begin. Thank you in advance for the help [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 08:30 PM PDT Does anyone have experience with visual and physical clarity after stretching their neck? I know that the neck has tons of nerves that connect the mind to the body but whenever I stretch them out I get a wave of clarity that can be disorienting. How do you reorient yourself after such a sudden physical change? [link] [comments]
Two questions - morning routine and yoga and Wim Hof Method. Posted: 06 Apr 2020 05:24 PM PDT First question, those of you with a morning routine, what is it? And, any yogis combining yoga practice with practicing the Wim Hof Method? Hope you are all doing okay in this time. [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:54 PM PDT Hello, beginner here The title says it all, I would love recommendations of books about yoga, in particular about the history and the philosophy behind it. I'm very new at this but yoga is becoming one of the most important part of my day and I'd like to fully embrace and understand this lifestyle. Thank you! [link] [comments]
| Does anyone have tips on how to stay focused while practicing yoga at home? Posted: 06 Apr 2020 09:05 AM PDT I usually love yoga. At the studio, I have no problem getting "in the zone" and just enjoy the feeling of the movement. With the current situation, I have been trying to follow along with at home yoga sequences from Alo Moves & Youube, but I just can't stay focused. The ENTIRE TIME I have these intrusive thoughts about what I'll make for dinner, and wondering what the dog is doing, or how uncomfortable a pose is and how I can't wait to shower. I usually end up quitting with about 10 minutes left of the half hour class because it's "close enough." Does anyone else have this struggle? How can I get into a good flow at home? Help! TLDR; Can't focus at all at home for some reason, but have no problem focusing at the studio. Why is this happening, and how can I minimize distractions so I can enjoy yoga at home? Thank you! | Posted: 06 Apr 2020 10:16 AM PDT Aloha! What insane times. The thoughts of fear and anger , as my wife has been nursing covid pts one week now combined with her having to make me move out bc she's scared to death of infecting my immunocompromised butt (7 months post kidney transplant woop woop!). Meaning I can't physically be there for her when she needs me most... Thankful yoga and meditation have been growing the last 2-3 decades, it really benefited us with convenient access and unimaginable resources, soothing the soul & strengthening the spirit. So I had to move back to my parents house to wait this out. My dad is a natural yogi, maybe not flexible but he has always inspired me with his physical strength and mindset. Homeboy grew up a poor farm boy, raised simply to be kind and work hard, he worked his way to live the most beautiful life possible. It's tough watching age slowly creep up on him. So I finally took the time to help set him up for chair yoga with home girl Adrienne! He loved it, he's so funny laughing at himself when he can't do something. My heart I tell ya. | Posted: 06 Apr 2020 11:12 AM PDT Anyone have any photos, comments or stories on their hip opening journeys? I've been practicing on and off for a while, really committed this year, then like most got off track because of covid and am now diving in again during the quarantine. However, my hips are so tight. Painfully tight in many positions. They always have been but sometimes I feel a little down about it. So for some motivation I'd love to see or hear about your tight hips! [link] [comments] |

Yogis who are strength trainers - how do I get enough of both without tiring myself out? Posted: 06 Apr 2020 12:10 PM PDT Backstory: I've been strength training since I was 16 (my first love... as far as fitness goes). I'm 22 now, and I've been practicing yoga 3-5x a week for almost two years now. I haven't been doing very well with strength training since I started practicing yoga because my schedule usually only allowed for one type of exercise each day for 30-60 minutes. Now that I'm quarantine, I've been trying to incorporate both. However, my yoga has been lacking. I cried during savasana today because my practice was so bad - I wasn't in the right Frame of mind, probably having anxiety due to the pandemic, was practicing in the kitchen which is not the place I usually practice. Plus, I did not feel strong - every muscle hurts from strength training so much lately. Any yogis who are also strength trainers - do you have a schedule that works for you to do enough of both? I can't find that balance (no pun intended)! [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Apr 2020 07:31 PM PDT From what I've read I think the type I'm looking for is Iyengar, but I'm not 100% sure. When I do yoga I enjoy balance positions and stretches the most. I really like to take it slow though and stay in position for a minute or two, get comfortable in the position and relax my mind and just breathe and clear my head. I like a little challenge, but never so much so that all of my focus is on the position and I'm not able to relax into it and enjoy. I've watched a lot of Yoga With Adrienne, I think she's great but for me she moves way too fast from position to position, and is a little too chatty (though she is funny!). That's why I'm looking for a better fit. Is Iyengar the type I'm looking for? Does anyone have any YouTube recommendations? I'd also love a little more guidance on how the positions should feel, but not much talking other than that. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Apr 2020 03:29 PM PDT I recently ordered the yoga wheels off of Amazon and I am trying to get some advice on how to use them. I looked on youtube for workouts and stretches but when I use it to stretch, it causes me discomfort in my back. Is this normal? Also some advice on how to use all 3 sizes 13, 10.5, and 6.5 inch wheels. Thank you [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Apr 2020 03:17 PM PDT I mean... Wouldn't I be better off getting up to a seated position and meditating from there? Or is there a more specific goal intended for Shavasana? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Apr 2020 04:54 PM PDT I'm super into weight training and calisthenics in my normal life. I'm a personal trainer. I've done yoga casually but with lock down I've been doing it more and more. It's using a ton of muscles I'm not use to being engaged I suppose and wanted to know how often should I rest between yoga sessions lasting about a hour [link] [comments]
