| Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:21 AM PDT I've cycled competitively for 20 years. Now I have two little ones I'm hooked on yoga. Naturally I have always had a small and weak upper body and a big cyclist's arse and powerful thick legs. I find I keep collapsing in crow and for headstands, whilst I'm getting there with core strength my arms and shoulders are just shaking/sometimes collapsing under the weight of my lower body. Do other women find they are stronger in the lower body? And is it normal we have to work on balancing? Alternatively my warrior is ok at least. I see some men shaking and I can last all day. | I would like some opinions on how I'm doing my yoga. Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:59 PM PDT So, first of all, I have a bad lower back. I'm 32, and when I was 25 I had a pinched nerve which greatly restricted mobility. My spine usually feels like rebar, and I'm always rigid. The nerve was unpinched when I was 29, but even now I'm still comically tight. My regular workout after that used to be running and weight lifting. Since the covid outbreak, I've decided to try yoga again. I used to do yoga before my pinch, but I've never been able to since then. I'm not fat, but Im about a foot away from reaching my toes. So today, I tried a variety of positions that target the psoas and lower back. Just finding my way to the beginning positions was murder, and I very slowly and carefully settled into the basic positions. I needed to use blocks for some things. All of it was very difficult to maintain, my legs and back spasmed a lot, and I had to be very determined and patient to follow through, but I held the positions, settled into them (which for a few psoas stretches was nothing short of torture), and maintained full breathing until it stopped hurting, somewhere between 10 full breaths or 3 minutes. So here's my point. After doing a work out that most people would find simple, but I found to be at times scream in agony painful, I feel nothing short of amazing. I feel limber, like I did when I was 20. I can touch my toes with straight legs, I can sit down, I can lay in hard ground, and i can get up by myself without rolling into a pushup first. I can't overstate how loose and healthy I feel, how natural I feel in my own body again. So my question is, in my unique state of being, is it wise to keep pushing through the pain and power through the intense rigidity until my body more permanently loosens up like it was pre nerve pinch, or is the risk too high? | How to fall out from handstand? Getting away from the wall! Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:24 PM PDT Hi all, I've been practicing my handstands for a couple months now and I'm now trying to get away from the wall because I know this is my biggest crutch. I can do a solid handstand unassisted from the wall but I have this mental block of not wanting to fall. Does anyone have good tips for learning how to 'cartwheel' out of handstand safely? Every time I try to bail out of handstand into a cartwheel I can't seem to move my hand out. My hand is kind of just stuck and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I end up just crumbling and falling with my hands stuck in place! Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Has anyone dreamed of opening their own yoga studio? If so, what's it like? Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:25 PM PDT I've always thought about opening my own yoga studio and pictured what it would be like. I really loved a studio I went to in Tasmania called Alceme and totally inspired me to strive for this dream. Would love to hear everyone else's ideas, dreams, and thoughts! [link] [comments]
Slightly personal question related to men Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:40 PM PDT Hey guys, I've gotten back into yoga in isolation here (30 days with Adrienne, woo!). I'm a dude, and I've noticed some uncomfortable feelings in my groin area when doing downward dog or a forward fold, etc. Basically any poses that are hip width apart or closer, my... organ... seems to want to do the turtle hiding in his shell. This is embarrassing for me to ask, because I'm slightly overweight but not obese, maybe 15 lbs over weighing at 190 ish. Is this issue because of fatty tissue in my lower abdomen, or because my fellas are pushing forward? Has any other guys ran into this? I wear boxer briefs when doing my practice, is there another article of clothing that my give me more freedom? It is pretty uncomfortable and takes me out of the zone while practicing. Thanks for any advice! Upfate: Tried compression shorts today, and that helped quite a bit. I did have some small issues but those seemed usual. Thank you all for the advice! [link] [comments]
Tips on managing compressed ulnar nerve Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:14 AM PDT I have a compressed ulnar nerve from poor posture during cycling. Do you have any tips on how I can manage around the pinched nerve during plank-type poses? The poses where part of the body weight is on the palm? I practiced bikram for five years but stopped a Couple of years ago. So, while not a completely new beginner, I am also not an experienced practitioner. I would love your ideas on how I can manage this . [link] [comments]
What are the original “yoga texts”? Posted: 10 Apr 2020 04:49 PM PDT I am familiar with Buddhism, and in that case it's the Pali Canon and sutras. I feel like reading some of those texts deepened my understanding of Buddhism, and was wondering what the equivalent for yoga? [link] [comments]
[COMP] MOVING WITH YOUR BODY VS YOUR EYES Posted: 10 Apr 2020 03:47 AM PDT Using your eyes (your back isn't as engaged as it's supposed to be - the body tends to be weaker) [REPOSTING] Hey, guys. I actually rarely post here (I'm new here so I may not be fully aware of the rules) but today I wanted to share something that took me a couple of years to actually understand. I've been doing yoga since I was 15 and now I'm 21. I actually realised I was doing my poses wrongly even though I got into the pose. Note: I have lower blood pressure so sometimes, in certain poses and inversions, I can get super light-headed. Which was a problem for me while I was starting out yoga which then to my surprise, I found out from some sources and books that I have read, I wasn't actually moving with my body. The whole point of the yoga for me was to overcome my fears but one thing I was doing without realizing was BEING AFRAID. When I was starting to practice Urdhva Dhanurasana, I was pushing myself and forcing myself to move upwards. A lot of practice later, I got into the pose but something was wrong. I wasn't getting proper frontal flexion, it looked like someone was stepping on my chest as I was in the pose. Turns out I was following my eyes to see where I will go in the pose. Now, this was the moment I realised one of the most important things in Yoga which is Drishti, focus our gaze. Yoga trains you to have a peripheral vision but I wasn't actually using it in my poses. Not only that, when you follow your eyes, but you also get scared and sorta jam into the pose. Then when I'd lower down from the pose, I get super light headed and feel like I wanna faint. Then, I tried to close my eyes when doing certain poses, transitions and inversions. Like when I do a forward fold, I use to go down fast without letting my body get ready to go into the pose. So what I do know is, I make sure I use my spine to move instead of my eyes going down first. Like, I push my butt back make sure I round my back and my eyes should be the last thing facing the floor as I am in a forward fold. This actually helped me process the information of the pose way better and also, MY LIGHT-HEADEDNESS WAS ALL GONE. I wanted to share this so that people who are newer or just don't understand why they may not be getting the full benefits of yoga, this may be one of those reasons. Now, I finally can do yoga properly and engage the muscles that I need to. NOTE: This isn't medical advice, I personally believe everyone's body is different so make sure you're safe, aware and make sure you ask your teachers (if you have one). I hope y'all understood my message and feel free to comment and ask questions on how I achieved this pose! 💕💕💕 [link] [comments]

How long should a yoga session last? Posted: 10 Apr 2020 08:51 AM PDT I've started doing yoga a few weeks ago, mostly by watching Yoga with Tim and Yoga with Adriene. Most of their videos in the 30 day yoga series are 20-30 minutes. I know that yoga sessions in a studio last about an hour, therefore, how long should a yoga session last? Are Adriene's and Tim's too short or? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

what does it feel like to be really flexible? Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:58 PM PDT I am an unhealthy flexible, I can't sit on the floor without rounding my back and having my knees bent and I hate that. How does it feel to be flexible? [link] [comments]
Is it normal to feel less flexible when you are building muscle strength? Posted: 10 Apr 2020 09:51 AM PDT Hello, everyone. I'm currently working on improving my front splits. Months ago, I was able to reach the floor with my right leg forward (my left is less flexible). But I read somewhere that aside from stretching my hamstrings, I should also strengthen them. So that's what I did. I started incorporating hamstring strengthening yoga poses to my routine, but I noticed that it was a bit more uncomfortable to do the full right leg front splits now. Is this normal? Thank you. [link] [comments]
