Interested in Getting Into Astanga During Quarantine

    Posted: 12 May 2020 01:26 PM PDT

    Hi all

Hope everyone is safe and healthy. I'm an intermediate yogi - I do vinyasa 2 times a week or so for the past four years now. I've been reading a bit into ashtanga since quarantine and thought maybe now would be a good time to try and learn it. Are there any good videos people would recommend? I'm looking at the ones on Alo Yoga that seem pretty good ... interested to hear what you guys think of them. Part of me gets the feeling this particular style of yoga may be best to start with a teacher in the room though? Or if I have a solid understanding of foundational yoga moves do you think I could get into a practice using videos? Thanks!

    Beginner breathing questions

    Posted: 12 May 2020 09:25 AM PDT

I'm a 42 year old man. I've been practicing yoga in fits and starts since the end of last year, with the intention of establishing a daily practice. Until last week I was practicing by doing 60 minutes of the intermediate full practice in the Down Dog app 3 or 4 times a week. That practice is a good physical workout but, because my breathing became fast, I was not able to stay connected to my breath or to keep my movements in sync with my breath which resulted in a very unsettled mind during the practice.

After doing a little googling about breath and yoga I came upon some info about ashtanga and decided to try it as my primary practice. I am choosing to approach it as an absolute beginner.

My practice for the last three days has been 5 repetitions of sun salutations A and 3 repetitions of B, followed by the closing sequence.

    I have two questions:

    • My plan for progressing my practice is to continue with sun salutations until I can complete 5 of both A and B while maintaining steady breath, at which point I will begin working through the fundamental positions. Does that seem like a good plan?
    • What should I do when I find myself becoming short of breath? Today, for example, I found that I was beginning to chase my breath at the end of each round of the B sequence. I ended up holding the standing pose for 3 or 4 breaths until my breathing calmed down a bit before continuing with the next round. Is this a good approach or is there a different strategy I should be using?

I just had a bike accident and the first thought on my mind was “theres goes my ashtanga practice”

    Posted: 12 May 2020 05:17 AM PDT

This lockdown was a blessing for me. Daily primary plus additional hatha yoga and pranayama, Shambhavi mahamudra. This lockdown was transformational for me in the sense that I now consistently wake up before 4:30 Am, quit my nicotine addiction, and have left caffeine for good.

Today i was heading out to get some Shilajit and Ashwagandha (ayurvedic herbs) and I got into an accident. Hurt my right knee, foot and left elbow bad.

First thought on my mind when I fell: damn, theres goes my daily 2x a day yoga streak. Ill be injured for a week minimum.
