Sorry to double tap, but...back pains ft. Knees

    Posted: 10 May 2020 08:02 AM PDT

Hello there, long time redditor first time poster, and new to this subreddit!

Currently, I'm in the Marines (7 years and counting) and you can guess that we do a myriad of physical tasks, whether it be ranges, hikes, drills, or just plain carry this from point a to point b. Over the course of my years I've accumulated a fair amount of wear and tear. My muscles have become more and more tight over time. I try stretching and it helps but then I'm back to square one. I've had chronic back and knee pains for about 5 years now. I've been to the base physical therapist since the genesis of this issue and have been denied MRIs and XRays on multiple occasions. I get hit with the "just stretch" even if an injury I'm going to sick call for was an impact injury that recently took place. All in all I'm trying to move away from Navy Medicine and just try to fix this myself or at least alleviate the pain enough to where it's not a 10 minute struggle to get out of bed.

What stretches can I do to re-align my spine, alleviate lower back strain and tension and just become more flexible overall? Where do I start? Can someone break it down for me?

TLDR; I'm a Marine with a chronic back and knee issues Navy medicine made it worse so now I'm going it alone because I dont want to be paralyzed what stretches can I do to alleviate my pain

    Doing lying cross correctly?

    Posted: 10 May 2020 05:11 PM PDT

Sorry this is a stupidly basic question but I tried the starting to stretch routine in the wiki and everything was good but when I tried to do the lying cross it felt like, super easy? I even tried to advanced version where you lay down completely and stretch the opposite arm to the front. Like I didn't really feel any stretch anywhere. I was just wondering if I was doing it correctly? I tried to follow along with the video: lay one arm down below the other until my shoulder touched the floor, stretch the other arm out in front, lay all the way down to deepen. Am I missing something? Or do I just happen to be good at this one specific stretch lol.

    Thanks!

Question about the feeling during stretching

    Posted: 10 May 2020 02:15 PM PDT

When I hold a stretch on a muscle, let's say the calf for example, I only feel the stretch on a small portion of the width of my calf. The majority of my calf doesn't feel like it is being stretched at all. I'm just wondering if this is normal. I would imagine that the part that feels the stretch is just the tensest part of the muscle and is being worked in order to 'catch up' to the range of the rest of the muscle. Therefore once I stretch enough to noticeably increase my flexibility, I'll start to feel the rest of the muscle being pulled to its limit because there isn't a shorter muscle that is limiting the entire joints range. Is this correct and normal? By the way, I am clearly new to stretching and am very stiff overall.

How do I know if i’m overstretching?

My legs are different lengths and are causing havoc on my spine.

    Posted: 10 May 2020 04:28 AM PDT

My left leg is half an inch taller than my right. This has left me with a small kink at the base of my spine (mild lumbar scoliosis) & poor posture after years of not knowing this. Yoga helps with the back no problem, but the leg length? Do I need orthopedic shoes to help me along? Thanks!

Lower back pain while correcting APT.

    Posted: 10 May 2020 09:45 AM PDT

I recently started working on glute and ab strength in an effort to stretch my hip flexors. I do regular yoga and I'm flexible everywhere, but my hip flexors. So, after some research I found out that I could stretch my hips from now until forever, but it wouldn't matter because of my weak glutes and abs.

I am not diagnosed, but I do have a significant curve to my spine that might be indicative of APT. After doing things like: body weight squats and deadlifts, hip bridges and ab exercises, I am having lower back pain. Also, I do know the correct posture for these moves.

Normally, I can put my palms on the floor in a forward fold, but my with the pain I my back it is uncomfortable to put on socks.

My question: is this a normal part of the process? Is this "pain" really just my back being upset having to be straight? I've done weightlifting in the past, but not paired with serious hip openers—could it be adding that in?

Any info would be great. Thanks!
