| Curious, what is the one thing you wish you knew when you first started practising yoga? Posted: 12 May 2020 09:54 AM PDT I'm really enjoying seeing so many people using this time in lockdown / stuck at home to start up a yoga practice. I thought it would be interesting for people to share the nuggets of wisdom that helped them improve and grow when they were yoga beginners. And, to the teachers, what is the core piece of advice that you wish every beginner knew? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 12 May 2020 02:52 PM PDT Today I did my first ever practice without a teacher, no video, YouTube, Down Dog app. I just put on some music, grounded myself with some pranayama, limbered up and just followed my breath for 30 blissful minutes. Lots of the things I did were things I've enjoyed doing in my led practice (3 legged dog to knee to tricep and skandasana side to side and up to utthita tadasana), but it felt great. Just following the breath and listening to the body. Nothing complicated. Yoga is brilliant isn't it! [link] [comments] |
| Guidance Needed! I want to teach healing yoga, but I am NOT SKINNY! Posted: 12 May 2020 01:50 PM PDT Hey everyone! New to the group! So, fun story, I recently had a dream where I sat at the feet of Maya Angelou and asked her what I was supposed to do with my life. She told me, simply, "yoga." And I argued, saying I was too loud, too bombastic, and not thin enough. And she told me, "That's exactly why." So, I am interested in teaching yoga that is more authentic, body-accepting, and healing centric. I heal while everyone else heals. You come as you are. I come as I am. Here's the deal: I am not tiny! There are poses I cannot yet physically do! I have had itty bitty friends who have gone through yoga training and come out sore and immobile. I'm completely intimidated and don't know where to start. While I know that I'm bringing something different and probably very needed to the table by not looking like everyone else, it still seems like I should fit that mold while I am perusing online certification courses. Anyone have any advice for how to proceed? What the first step is to take? Not afraid of hard work over here. Just want something that is going to suit my purposes. Thanks in advance! | Posted: 12 May 2020 09:47 AM PDT I've recently started yoga (finished YWA 30 days, 20 days into yoga camp), and although I'm loving it and have noticed loads of improvements so far, I've been having a lot of trouble sitting up straight in seated poses, particularly sukhasana and siddhasana. It takes a lot of effort for me to get a decent lift in these poses and I feel a lot of strain in my lower back after a pretty short amount of time. Lifting my hips with a cushion helps a little, but doesn't solve the problem completely. I often catch myself pulling on my knees with my arms to keep myself sitting up straighter. I have relatively long arms, which seems to add to the issue as when directed to rest my hands on my knees or thighs, I have to bend them significantly, which pulls my centre of gravity backwards and puts me off balance, causing me to have to work even harder to sit up straight! Does anyone have any tips or pointers to help with this problem? It feels like building stronger core and lower back muscles would help a lot. Is it something I can expect to passively get better over time, or do I need to work on it specifically? Is needing a cushion something that in time I will work my way out of, or will it always help, simply due to my body dimensions? [link] [comments] |

| How should you go about finding a proper yoga instructor? Posted: 12 May 2020 03:21 PM PDT I'm interested in learning a lot more about yoga, including the philosophy behind it, meanings etc. Not just the poses. Does anyone know a way to do this? Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 12 May 2020 11:35 AM PDT Looking for a recommendation on wrist support. I have carpal tunnel and it's made it difficult to practice. I've tried a couple of workout supports, but without great results. Any yoga specific recommendations? [link] [comments] |
| Is yoga the most risk-averting studio to attend with businesses re-opening? Posted: 12 May 2020 04:30 PM PDT I'll save my political thoughts on re-opening and the general lack of control we have on the Coronavirus for another thread. But, with businesses re-opening near me next week, I was alerted that a yoga studio near me is planning a re-open with distancing protocol that isn't released yet. I'm normally a member of a HIIT gym. Treadmills, Weights, inclines, all that Jazz. And I'm tremendously nervous about going back. I love the high energy group setting, but I'm not comfortable potentially using weights/treadmills/etc that others have used that day - even if the staff cleans them. Also, HIIT was murdering my body. I was going almost daily from September through March and my knees and legs were just blowing out. I think yoga as a practice is a good challenge but will be kinder to my body in that there won't be excessive hill climbs and max speed runs. Anyway, the crux of my question is - do you think yoga studios have the opportunity to be the most risk-averting group fitness classes upon re-opening? Say I just do power flows and vinyasa - it'd just be me and my mat that I bring in. I'd love to use a block or a strap, but I'd bring my own or opt for child's pose I guess. The point is it's my equipment nobody but me has touched and unless the yoga class is packed (which I doubt you can even do right now), there has to be plenty of space from distance, right? I think you can more easily spread out people doing yoga than you can people on treadmills or rowers. I totally could be wrong. I have no idea. That's why I'm asking. I know I could just practice at home - but it's impossible for me to workout from home. That's why I pay for classes. I deal with depression, self doubt, lack of motivation - especially in a pandemic, so I'd like to work out somewhere if it's safe and the right protocols are taken. [link] [comments] |

| Are there good and affordable yogic lifestyle coaches anyone may recommend? Posted: 12 May 2020 07:01 PM PDT So, I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this. But, I'd like to begin making larger lifestyle changes that I came to realize pre-pandemic with my yoga practice. I'm a 25 year old male and have had a lifelong battle of depression, identity crises, and never really feeling like my authentic self. It actually took me five years to finally go into a yoga studio after anxiety and toxicity that was instilled to me from my father at a young age, and I honestly never felt happier than when I was on my mat. It sort of felt like I was becoming more of myself and shedding some insecurity away. It made me begin exploring the spiritual side of yoga and other forms of yoga and it got me curious about establishing a meditation, holistic/Ayurvedic living, and of course deepening my yoga practice. I'm still very new and have a lot of goals. But, I struggle at home and don't feel comfortable being in a studio for the foreseeable future with the pandemic. I've always struggled in solo workouts. I have depression and a lot of issues moving myself - so I haven't worked out since this lockdown began. For some people, it's easier to get on the mat, dedicate that time at home. But it's a true struggle for me. I've always needed structure. Anyway, I have decided I'd like to begin to find myself. But I have no idea where to begin. I know a lot of yoga teachers also serve as lifestyle/holistic/wellness coaches as well, so I wanted to at least start here. It's kind of a weird spot to be in as a mid 20s male, but I'd like to work with someone. I feel like I have all these goals and interests but have such a hard time kickstarting. Sometimes I feel weak. But, I just want to see if maybe anyone knows of a program or mentor program or some sort of work that can help me. To be able to talk to and learn from and process this with someone I know would be monumental for me. I know the change and the work are things I will need to do myself. But someone to talk to and guide me and be there to reflect with, I know would make a big difference. But I just don't know where to begin [link] [comments] |
| Pinched shoulders in downward dog! Posted: 12 May 2020 06:49 PM PDT Apologies if this has been asked before. I searched before posting but couldn't find was I was looking for. I will delete if inappropriate or if I overlooked a similar post! My shoulders tend to pinch when I'm in downward dog. Does this happen to anyone else? I'm not sure if my shoulders just aren't very open/flexible yet or if it has more to do with pinched nerves. When I lay on my back and rest my arms above my head, or even with my elbows bent and hands behind my head, my shoulders feel pinched and my arms fall asleep within a minute or two. Downward dog and laying down in those positions are the only times I have issues with this. Perhaps this could be more of a medical issue but I wanted to see if anyone here has experienced this, and if so, how they got past it. EDIT: I forgot to include that I have scoliosis. | How do you move away from tutorials/guides? Posted: 12 May 2020 03:46 AM PDT So I'm a beginner currently doing 30 days of YogawithAdrienne and I'm planning on keeping it up after the 30 days. What I'm wondering is how do people transition from being guided via a tutorial to just doing it and making it up for yourself? Any tips/tricks for inspiration or motivation? [link] [comments] |
| What to do when you feel knee pain in flexibility poses? Posted: 12 May 2020 07:22 AM PDT I'm in a point in my practice that I discovered that I can do any flexibility pose as long as the right muscles are relaxed. The problem is that sometimes I get this annoying pain in what I believe is the lateral ligament of my knee. What should I do to prevent this? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 12 May 2020 03:35 PM PDT Can someone give me any tips on how to break in the manduka pro mat? It is incredibly slippery right now that I can't even do a downward dog without almost falling completely off, dangerously slippery. I tried the salt scrub and that didn't even seem to help a bit. I can't even practice on it right now because of how slippery it is. Their is not much sun here in NYC so I can't sun bathe it too much. I'm thinking maybe dish soap? I am really stressed out because I just want to be able to use it, it was so expensive :( [link] [comments] |
| Glute pain when coming out of handstand Posted: 12 May 2020 02:00 PM PDT Hi guys! I'm pretty new to practicing handstands. I'm experiencing a lot of soreness in my right glute; I might be coming down too hard on my right leg. Has anyone experienced this or know how to land softer when coming out of a handstand? | Posted: 12 May 2020 07:23 AM PDT I'm a bit of a newbie at yoga so I'm sorry if this is the wrong way to go about the question! I've been practicing yoga pretty regularly for the past two months, and one of the things I'm working on is hip flexibility. I've seen a lot of recommendations of malasana as a pose that is supposed to help with that, but when I do it it feels deceptively easy. Most other hip stretchers like butterfly and pigeon feel difficult and I can really feel the stretch, so I practice them often because of this. And a forward fold with my legs wide apart feels nigh impossible. I'm worried I'm doing the pose wrong and missing out on a great stretch, any recs on things to try and improve? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 12 May 2020 01:18 PM PDT So during this 'lockdown' period I have started practicing yoga. I had started by using an app which had free membership for a short amount of time. That time has ran out and I've found that I had stopped practicing as often. I was wondering if I could learn enough about yoga to simply practice without using videos or apps. Perhaps there are some things I could read? I know the more you do it, the more you know so I'm just seeking advice, are there any good books to read/videos to watch in order to expand my knowledge to the point where I do not need any references? Thanks and peace [link] [comments] |

| Headache, dizziness and nausea after downward facing dog Posted: 12 May 2020 11:09 AM PDT Hello! My roommate and I sometometimes do yoga together. Almost always after any position that is downward in some way, she experiences those symptoms. It's not too bad, but annoyes her. Is there an obvious reason with an easy solution behind that or should she see a doctor? She's medium fit I'd say, quite thin, doesn't drink or smoke, drinks almost no coffee, eats healthy. Thanks! :) [link] [comments] |
