Been trying on & off for 8 years. Finally making some progress. Any tips? Stretches?

Let's open those lungs a bit and breathe a little fuller. One breathe at a time. Especially for those who find it hard to sit and do breathing exercises/pranayama.

Sorry for the bad image quality, but these are my front splits so far! Started stretching again 4 days ago. More info in the comments. Any advice?

Stretching hamstring causes immediate lower back relief?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 01:20 AM PST

Was wondering if this is normal. When I stretch I do one leg at a time for 45 seconds and then both for 30 seconds. Once I've done this and I lie down i get such a strong relief that I almost can't breathe. Couldn't find anything about this on the internet so that is why I'm asking.

Recommended anatomy and/or biomechanics learning resources?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:39 PM PST

I've been getting more into [edit: typo] learning about the anatomy and biomechanics around what happens when we stretch and movement arts in general and am curious if anyone else has any nerdy resources they'd recommend. I'd love to find a whole class online (ideally free, but would be willing to pay), but most of what I can find are pretty much straight-up "regular" anatomy classes (not that that's a bad thing, but I imagine there's got to be something like "anatomy for dancers" or something like that out there!).

Two resources I've really loved are:

    • This eBook someone at MIT put together (I actually share it all the time because I think it introduces the basic anatomy behind stretching so well)
    • Anatomy and biomechanics workshops by Sioux ZQ at Fit&Bendy (online), she's a physical therapist and her anatomy workshops have been so fun! Can't recommend her enough!

On the Topic of Exercise and Stretching

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:21 AM PST

    Hola Bendy People!

I am in need of your sage advice.

I am currently working on the Tykato Fitness beginner stretching routine. Loving it.
I have, however, had an on-off love affair with kettlebell and full bodyweight exercises. I would love to incorporate both into my routine, but am unsure about how far I can go without overtraining...

I am aware that stretching routine after exercise is recommended, but can I do both on the same day, 3 times a week? Or would that be counter productive? Should I rather split them to one in the morning and the other in the evening? Would that even make a difference?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Middle Splits Pain

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:58 AM PST

Hey y'all! So I've been stretching for my middle/straddle splits after I already was able to get into my front splits without any issue. About a couple weeks ago, I seem to have overstretched a tad bit, however the pain hasn't really gone away since then. Every time I attempt to stretch my straddle in particular (butterfly and honestly just spreading my legs while sitting straight), the muscle on my right inner thigh starts hurting like crazy to the point where I can't even bring my knees all the way down in butterfly splits or get anywhere close to a full straddle split. Can someone tell me what muscle this is and whether I should stop stretching for a while or seek medical help? The pain isn't severe but it prevents me from making progress in my middle splits and I would like to know whether I just need more time to recover, or if the pain will always be there from now on.

Ankle mobility question (couldn't find anything on Google)

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:55 AM PST

So I already know that I have poor ankle mobility, I can't squat without lifting my heels, and when I do that test where you position your toes 5 inches from a wall and try to lean your knee forward, I fail miserably.

So at first I thought my ankle joint was the problem, because my calves and back of my legs don't feel tight when I do that test. I was going down the rabbit hole of using bands to readjust the joint. But I tried that wall test again, but this time while standing, and I can almost get my knee to touch the wall with my heel glued to the floor! But when I bend my knee, that mobility goes away. My calves/heels don't feel tight at all. I don't have any ankle pain or tightness feeling in my calves unless I put my toes up onto a wall and do a calve stretch.

Any ideas if it's my ankle joint or if I really only just have tight calves...?
