Yoga is saving my mental and physical health during this time

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 08:37 AM PDT

I started practicing yoga back in January at a local studio and I fell in love with it. I am an ICU nurse at a level one hospital in my city. My job is stressful all the time, even before the pandemic. I found that practicing yoga really helps me cope with the stress. Now we are seeing the beginning of the pandemic in my area. Our city has a shelter in place order. At times it has been difficult to cope. I volunteered myself at my hospital to help care for these patients. It only made sense to me as I am a young, healthy individual. Now, as someone on the frontlines, keeping myself healthy both mentally and physically has never been more important than right now. Yoga helps me more than anything else.

This post seems kind of pointless, but I just wanted to share with everyone how I have found strength through yoga during this difficult time. I am so glad that I started practicing this year. I don't know where I would be right now with out it.

[COMP] As a transgirl in a studio environment, I'm so pleased to be accepted and welcomed by my pole sisters. Their support led me to attempt a full camel and I couldn't be prouder for the achievement!!

[COMP] wheeling myself into quarantine feedback is welcome!

[COMP] This pose seems wheel-y popular lately. Also trying to work my shoulders more for eventual handstands.

My teacher decided to go on line

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 08:17 AM PDT

I was feeling kind of bummed because I had to stop going to my classes because of covid19. Yes I can practice at home. Yes Adrienne and Tim's videos rock... But I still missed my teacher and her classes.

She called me today to tell me she is going to be able to teach through Instagram. I don't have an account yet but I Will be making one just for that.

I feel So happy that she is willing to work like this and is thinking of how to make her class available. I must mention her classes work through donations, meaning that you Pay for class the amount you can. Sometimes it can be one dollar, or ten, or fifty or none if you are in financial distress.

I just feel So happy and wanted to share.

    Video recorded myself today

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 06:46 PM PDT

I was inspired by the many awesome videos on this subreddit to video record myself doing yoga and it was such a wonderful way for me to enjoy my progress/strengths and observe ways to improve. My warriors are kick ass. I also noticed my butt sticking up during plank and will now step back more to create space and elongate my body during plank. I highly recommend recording yourself!

Is it rude to take an extra long mat to a studio class?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 04:17 PM PDT

My husband recently gifted me the lululemon super long mat (I don't know what it's called - I just know that it's cozy and my head and feet don't hang off the ends every time I lay down (I'm 6'1"). Right now I'm exclusively practicing at home because of COVID19, but once we get past this, I'll most likely move back into my normal routine of studio classes. Basically I'm wondering if it's rude for me to show up to class with my big mat. Would you be annoyed? In fairness, I DO take up that much space no matter what, but I'd just like to get some other yogis' opinions.

    Thanks for reading!

    How to prevent "core"pain

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Hi y'all. New Yogi here . I started yoga only 2-3 weeks ago. Currently due to covid I'm just following online classes from CPY.

I am not "fit" unlike the people I see doing yoga. I infact started this due to stress and overall well being. Due to joint issues, general gym is too hard on me.

Anyway..I'm wondering that is it normal for "core"/ tummy in my case is very sore after say 2 1 hour sessions? I'm following the core Power yoga 1 which is supposed to be newbie friendly but it hurts so much I can't leave the bed ..standing is fine..just when I have to bend my legs perpendicular to my torso .it hurts.

    Hoping for any help.

What is the pose name for reaching back to grab your ankle while you're in three legged dog?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 06:41 PM PDT

So you're getting a bit of a backbend/quad stretch? It's like tiger's pose/vyaghrasana, but from dog rather than tabletop. I've been teaching online and I want to be clearer when I cue poses.

If I can't fold forward during butterfly or half lotus what muscles are tight? Plus other general questions.

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 01:21 PM PDT

    Also,

    What stretches release the psoas?

If I can't do a wheel pose, what do I need to stretch or strengthen?

My lower back gets tight when playing basketball. It feels like a huge knot. It's not very painful -- just a numb tightness. What could be causing this? I feel like an old man sometimes after basketball and I'm 26.

I appreciate you for taking the time help me!

Using other routines (Myrtle) to open up (hips) for poses

    Posted: 24 Mar 2020 09:14 AM PDT

I've practiced various styles of yoga over the years, in addition to a regimen of running and weights for fitness. One of the things I've found is instead of practicing a specific pose over and over to get better, you instead can explore other ways to move your body that'll directly help that pose you're trying to nail.

Being a runner, I always have tight hips. One thing I've been practicing more as a dynamic warm up for runs called the Myrtle Routine. It's not stretching, but more dynamic movements. Without practicing certain yoga poses more, I've found that this routine has opened up my hips in certain ways that allows for poses I've struggled with over the years to be easier.

So just an FYI that if you're struggling with some poses still no matter how long you've been practicing them, try out other forms of movement and see how it can affect. If you've got tight hips, try out this routine.
