Welcome to Form Check Friday! Here is the link to all previous Form Check Fridays

Please post a photo or video of the stretch you'd like to be critiqued. Do include any specific questions you have about your form.

Your video or photo should be:

    • Oriented the correct way, we want to see the lines of your body
    • Be formatted such that there isn't unnecessary video of you preparing for the move (keep it short)
    • Have the important bits of the movement clearly visible (multiple angles is always useful)
    • Include the whole body

    Rules for critiquing form

    • Constructive criticism only
    • Feel free to point others to resources that address their form and/or questions if you aren't "qualified" to give them advice yourself

If your form is awesome, consider posting it in the Show Off Sunday thread!

Compass pose... I didn't know I can do this. It turns out this pose not only stretches your hamstrings, it also opens your chest and stretches your back. It's all shades of stretches for improving flexibility in all areas.

    Favorite knee strengthening exercises?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 08:14 PM PDT

My boyfriend recently has surgery on his meniscus (he had an injury like a bucket handle tear, but he tore a chunk off too apparently?) and he recently, for the first time ever, expressed interest to me in stretching and asked for ones that would be good for his knees. Does anyone have a couple easy ones I could start him off with?

    Minimalistic training for splits

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:17 AM PDT

I heard about a method of getting the splits by just "going as far as possible" each day until you get the splits. Does anyone know anything about this and have some input?

A note on lower back pain.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:22 AM PDT

When I was younger (I'm not old at 27 years) I hurt my lowerback doing deadlifts. Ironically, I was warming up when I hurt myself. I saw a specialist and he told me I likely sprained or tore something in my lower back or tendons/ligaments that are over your hips. It "healed". That was like 6 years ago and since then I have always had a nagging pain that I felt I could never stretch or really address. I felt like a glass cannon in many ways as I felt that if I was moved in a certain way I would collapse as that area would give out.

Well, the GF and I started yoga a year-ish ago and I realized that my flexibility was terrible. I have made a significant effort to stretch my hips and hamstrings. Only now, after a year of slowly working at it has my lower body flexibility reached a point where I can feel flexibility in my lower back and stretch/strengthen that area where I hurt myself all those years ago. If I stretch hard now, my low back feels it and I can be gently sore there the next day. It feels great. I no longer feel that sensation of being on the brink of collapse over certain movement.

People have said that most back pain comes from your legs and I really do believe it now having seen the amount of effort that has gone into developing my flexibility to point where I can even address my lowerback in a meaningful way. So if you have back pain, keep at it-- hit the gym, stretch, and be consistent. Stretching really does help in my experience.

    Weak not tight

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 07:21 PM PDT

I was recently browsing some of the thread's in the stickies, and recall reading about (although I can't remember where exactly) how most people can't do the splits due to weakness.

The test was, stand upright, put your leg out to the side at a 90 degree angle, resting on a chair or table - it shouldn't be very difficult. The post even mentioned how only a small amount of people won't be able to do this because of some extra bone on their hip. The point was, since you can do this on both sides, and there is no one tendon running between the two legs, the inability to do side splits is caused by weakness and not tightness.

So my question is - what is actually weak? What muscles are weak that prevent this?

Does anyone know any routines or follow along videos that would help get a very flexible back?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 11:32 AM PDT

Hey, I'm just starting out and am looking to improve my back flexibility. I can do a backbend but I really want to progress and eventually be able to do things like a scorpion or needle. If anyone knows any tips or how long this may take, I'd appreciate any help. Also how long would you recommend stretching a day. Thanks!

How to do an aerial, daughter is getting really frustrated with her self

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:27 PM PDT

My daughter (12) has set a goal to get her aerial and has been working on it for a very long time and is really feeling down about not being able to do it yet, she just can't get over without putting her hands down, I think the problem is she isn't getting enough lift and her front leg is bending and she's not bringing it down fast enough, she knows this but is struggling to get past it and would be grateful for any advice and tips

    Ankle dorsiflexon in resting squat

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 07:19 PM PDT

    Question :

    1. When I do the standard "knee to wall" dorsiflexon test... (while standing ) I can easily do 5 inches (I'm 5'11 btw )

    2. When I knell the back leg.. a bit more difficult

    3. My resting squat has improved dramatically , however if I'm not "super warmed up"... and just try to do a resting squat... horrible (heels raise )

"Feels like ankle tightness " however I know some Of its adductor

    But my question is

    1. Is the ankle wall test giving me a false sense of "plenty of ROM" and that's really the problem?

    Nerve injury from hamstring stretching.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:00 PM PDT

SO i was recently stretching my hamstrings and following about 5 minutes of PNF stretching i relaxed my leg to find pins and needles in the heel and foot. 12 hours later i still have reduced sensation in the lateral foot and ankle, i assume i've overstretched a nerve. Is this a common injury that anyone else here has experienced, and how long was your recovery?

To routine or not to routine

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 08:05 AM PDT

Few questions for someone starting to work on his flexibility. Do you have a regular routine/sequence of stretches or is it better to spend X amount of time just working tight spots? If you have a routine, how often do you switch it up? Finally, how often do you do the routine (daily, couple times a day, etc)?

Hip bridge vs hip thrust and knee pain

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:24 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I am trying to improve my knee tightness which goes away when I get my pelvis tilted forward by strengthening my glutes and abs. However, when I perform a hip bridge (back on the ground), my knees will sometimes click as if they are being pulled on. This does not happen with a hip thrust (back on a bench). I was wondering if anyone could offer any answers as to why this might be.

    Thank you!

    Hip pain

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 10:10 AM PDT

    Hi, looking for some advice!

30, male. I went to a chiropractor about the pain many months ago and felt a bit ripped off, and felt like nothing was targeted to my hip pain. The pain was only on rare occasion so I thought little of it after that.

Its a bit worse nowadays and I recently discovered the pain can be triggered after missionary position with the gf (bit embarrassing)

It's at the top of the thigh, front of right hip. When it's triggered it can be painful for about 3 days, pain when standing, laying in bed with leg rotated at a certain angle.. This leads me to believe the muscle/joint/ hip flexor (?) is really tight. I've never been flexible, barely able to reach past knees, tight hamstrings etc.

I've read the faq but I'm a bit lost where to start. Does anyone have some great guides or advice for stretching out the hip properly?

Looking for an old post about working on pc while stretching

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:26 AM PDT

As the title says. I lost messages with the user who posted it, so I am asking anyone if you can remember a post from around 2 years ago.

A guy with long hair tied in a bun, a bit darker skin, posted a picture of himself performing either: kneeling hamstring stretch, kneeling lunge, horse stance or butterfly stretch. Text went along the lines how he maintained or improved his flexibility by doing a series of those stretches across the day.

As I recall, he also coached people and wrote some articles.

I'll continue my search. Thank you for even reading, in advance!
