When a familiar pose reveals itself over time

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 08:42 AM PDT

I love that feeling when you feel you've "mastered" a pose that's in rotation often like downward facing dog or warrior I, II only to feel the pose deepen over time. Something clicks and you learn something about the pose that you hadn't realized before. Yoga really is a relationship you cultivate with the practice and yourself; it is never stagnant and deepens with investment and intention.

    Forward bend questions

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 07:03 PM PDT

My forward bend is pretty bad, if I keep my back straight I can only bend to a right angle before the stretch is too much in my legs.

Other than continuing to stretch my hamstrings is there anything I can do to work on this?

I get some back pain in the mid to lower region about an inch from my spine that runs down my back and I'm trying to loosen it up.

(I know I can bend my knees during the pose, I'm just trying to give a guage of where I am.)

    Recommended poses for hip pain?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:40 PM PDT

I would love some easy poses I could ideally do lying down to help with hip pain. I've suffered from hip pain as long as I can remember and used to do yoga/PT to help. Exercise does help, but both my PT office and yoga studio are shut down due to the virus. I've been working from home and only going out for a daily walk/essential grocery shopping. So I've been pretty stagnant.

Hips have been bothering me just from lack of exercise but the last couple of days it has gotten excruciating. I can barely stand or walk for more than a couple of minutes (hence the need for lying poses).

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks and hope y'all are doing well.

    Assistance required

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 04:20 PM PDT

I am not poaching anything from this subreddit. I am hoping in good faith that as yogi's we have a mind for the collectives well-being.

Now to the point. I've started a subreddit for Yoga. /u/VedanticYoga is for everything to do with the 8 limbs and philosophy.

Yoga is for anyone and for hundreds of reason, there is no right or wrong. In saying that I've noticed a majority of members here focus on Asana which is perfectly beautiful.

In saying that, if you have a burning desire to know the philosophy, questions about the Yoga Sutras, mechanics of meditation, anything to do with the 8 limbs of yoga or information from the Vedas or Upanishads - I have made another place for us to share.

This isn't a self promoting ad but his information was necessary for this next bit.

We're approaching 100 members and I'll be requiring a moderator to assist. Head over to /u/VedanticYoga and drop a comment in the thread taking applications.

A million thank you's for helping us to have another place to talk Yoga,

    Namaste. 🙏🏼

    Mat question

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 06:34 PM PDT

I have two 5mm mats that I have stacked and my feet literally sink down into the hard wood floor when I step onto the mat. Is this normal? Is it time for new mats? If so what mats would you recommend? Overall my practice is leaving me pretty sore and I think it is the quality of these mats. Thanks <3

How to deal with sadness and exhaustion after doing yoga?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 08:51 AM PDT

I enjoy many aspects of yoga, but I struggle with the intense negative feelings that often hit me at the end of a session/class. I understand that those feelings come up from subconscious places or stored trauma centers in the body, so I try to accept them and breathe through them and let myself feel them. But they don't go away easily, and I think I end up just pushing them back down or ignoring them.... just for them to come back the next time I try yoga or meditation. I'd like to learn how to work through or release them, since they seem to be asking for attention. And I'm uncomfortable and don't know how to make myself feel better. Any advice or similar experiences?

Tips for creating a great yoga space?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 07:15 AM PDT

Hey all! I want to transform a better area to be dedicated to a yoga space in my room. I'm kinda just doing it in my room or whatever open space I can, but I want something more organized and uniform.

I wanna see your yoga space, or any tips of what you think I should incorporate into my yoga corner. Thank youu

What does your home practice look like?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 04:17 PM PDT

Now that we are all in to lockdowns/stay at home orders/closed studios, I am wondering what others practice looks like.

Do you practice every day? What time? For how long?

Just curious on how you are all fitting it in with your life.

Help with understanding which limits are just “in my head” and which are ones I should listen to

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 02:29 PM PDT

A recent news article about a yoga instructor (not my studio) that was telling his students to come to class as COVID-19 can't survive in the heat has got me thinking about how to know when to trust my yoga teacher. The studio I go to regularly tried to stay open and encouraged people to come to the private and low attendance classes they were offering and assuring people they were sanitizing everything, but it felt wrong - sanitizing isn't as easy as people seem to think it is. I think I feel like because yoga is more than "just exercise", I hadn't thought about how much confidence I have in my instructor (which is funny because when I was a powerlifter, I had no qualms about pushing back on my coach if I felt like I was going to do something I wasn't ready for).

There's a lot of times in class where I'll feel like I can't do something (crow pose was a good example - I was convinced it was the first step towards a broken nose), and through the encouragement and reassurance from my teacher I'm able to go a little bit further. But I don't know if I know how to tell if I'm nervous because I could hurt myself, or if I'm nervous about going further because I just don't feel confident in yoga.

I guess my question is two fold: One, what kind of guidance do you accept from your teacher, and two, how do you determine what "limits" you're feeling during practice should be listened to and which should be overcome?

Specific Online Instruction for the Middle Aged, Inflexible, and Inexperienced that is Post Joint & Spinal Surgeries???? Ready to commit to practice and need help getting started.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 08:13 AM PDT

Howdy! Can you direct me to specific online instruction for the Middle Aged, Chubby, Inflexible, Post Surgical, and Inexperienced crowd? Sessions that are realistically achievable (with modifications) and of reasonable length would be hugely appreciated.

I'm a martial artist so i don't require "chair yoga" but definitely need beginner instruction so I can practice in my own home for now.

No better time to start than now, since I can't go back and start yesterday. :)
