    A yoga lifestyle

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:07 PM PDT

Up until now, yoga has been basically a form of exercise to me, I've followed along youtube videos and went to the odd gym-based class the same way I have with say, pilates or any other exercise.

I've been doing some reading and YouTubing and I am sure you all know this already, but for myself I am discovering there is so much more to yoga than something to "do" at the gym once a week, like spin class.

There seems to be so many different branches and methods, I guess I'm interested to hear from people, what form of yoga do you follow? Is it more for the exercise benefits or do you also embrace the spiritual side? There are so many gurus and schools of yoga just on youtube alone, what was your process in finding that was right for you?

    Sprained Ankle

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:25 PM PDT

So, I walked outside today and immediately fell about 2 feet off my porch steps. I don't feel that going to a doctor is necessary. Ice, elevate, and rest is what I'm doing.

What are some poses I can do that won't involve standing at all?

    Peacefulness for the first time.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:17 PM PDT

I've been doing online yoga for about a month now, and today I truly felt peacefulness and relaxation during my practice. It was a feeling of letting go of all the anger and hatenes I had and letting it go with my exhale, I felt the energy leaving my body through my arms, and felt like a weight was lifted of me. What was your first peacful moment in yoga? How did it feel? What was going to make you tense?

How do you deal when your workout sucks?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 12:11 PM PDT

Hey, I'm sorry if this is too obvious or inappropriate. I started yoga two weeks ago and so far it's been amazing, totally awakening and motivating in this difficult time. However tonight for the first time my workout sucked. I basically forced myself to work out (I see why that's wrong now) and ended up frustrated with myself because I couldn't focus or hold positions I am usually fine with. Does it happen often to you? How do you deal? I guess I should just let it go and try again tomorrow. I'm just so disappointed!

Advice, good core but terrible bend at waist.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 02:58 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

Sorry, I appreciate there are plenty of resources available here for this but I guess I wanted to check and hopefully someone can give a quick answer for my 'specific' situation.

I'm a reasonably sporty guy in that I do a fair amount of exercise but I do have an office job. I've been doing bits of yoga online for a few months (Boho Beautiful), and to a handful of classes at a local gym. And I thought I was getting on OK generally. Eg Feel my core/balance is pretty strong.

However I've come to realize that my form on eg down dog is atrocious. Event on forward bends and things, although I can reach my feet comfortably, I'm concerned that it's all my lower back. And I think my hips have really low mobility for bending forwards. Maybe that's fairly normal for someone with my job.. But I have also noticed some slight pain in my lower back, if I rub my back.

So, should I do eg Adrienne's 30 day challenge? I've seen she explains things in a lot of detail, which is perhaps what I need. And presumably if yes, I should do the 2020 version, or are they all aimed at 'any'/beginner level?

And/or maybe do Adrienne's lower back pain yoga, and similar? I saw someone else mention that in response to a thread.

Or maybe focus on my hip mobility? Whenever I see videos/stretch guides for improving that, I wonder whether that's for opening your hips for eg the splits, or for what I think I am looking for, eg bending forwards from the hips. Or do they generally work for both?

Sorry again for the lengthy post. Am not looking for a detailed response at all! If someone just says Adrienne 30 day challenge is great for pseudo-beginners, then that is good enough for me 🙂.

    Thanks,

    Ed

Any yogis with scoliosis? Struggling with inversions :/

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Hi! I am a beginner yogi with 20 degrees S shape scoliosis & lordosis. I have done pilates for years for my back, but I guess my core is still weak because of the lordosis.. I don't have enough arm strength to do any type of inversion other than a headstand, but they are my dream! I am starting to get discouraged, open for any suggestions!

    Sciatica and tight hamstrings

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:51 AM PDT

Hey, 38 yo male here, I've been doing daily practice for about 30-60 minutes for about 3 months now, however I have somewhat severe sciatica and I've just recovered from my last flare up which lasted about 2 weeks... But now my hamstrings are SO tight I can't even extend my leg fully. Even downward dog is almost impossible.

Is there any suggested poses/etc that would be good for working on this problem without aggravating my sciatica? I felt like I was really doing well with my daily practice and was really getting somewhere before this happened, and now I feel like I'm an 80 year old :(

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Any anxiety relieving tips while practicing supported headstand?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 01:11 PM PDT

I've been improving on my practice over the last couple years building up arm and core strength to start incorporating inversions into it. I've mostly practiced with something that provides support to make hand/headstands easier or with a spotter but am ready to incorporate strengthening drills into my daily practice. Last night I had an anxiety attack while thinking about drills for today with the thought I'd accidentally snap my neck somehow while supporting myself which has me a little shaken and hesitant to keep progressing in my practice. Any advice for those of you that practice inversions on some mental tricks to get me out of my head besides deep breathing?

best yoga with Adriene 30 day challenge for splits and back flexibility?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:27 AM PDT

    Hi!

I have been searching around and haven't found what I'm looking for.

I would like to start one of Adriene's 30 day challenges, but I am looking to get the splits and improve my back flexibility. Is there one that is best for this?

I am creeped out by promises of "splits in 30 days!" and don't want to injure myself -- I don't mind taking it slow, I just want to know that progress is being made.

I'm open to other teachers, I just already know I like Adriene and that a lot of people are familiar with her work. Let me know if you know!
