Whats the significance of using your first two fingers to grasp your bog toe in padangustasana?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 06:38 PM PDT

Why are we specifically guided to grasp our big toe with our first two fingers? Is it specifically to set our bodies up mechanically/proper alignment? Does it have anything to do with specific energetic pathways which are thought to exist within those digits? Thanks

Unethical on so many levels... 99.5% of teachers and staff at these franchise studios have been furloughed, they claim that gift card sales will help employees which is verifiably false, & using the word "local" is straight up deceptive. Website banners for all 8 brands and 1500+ locations...

Back on the mat! I haven't done much since this quarantine, except stress about how to teach online (high school Drama teacher!). So today I made myself practice a little, and wanted to share here in this really nice online community

    Sirsasana I or Sirsasana II

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 09:08 PM PDT

So I just learned Sirsasana I after knowing Sirsasana II for a couple of days. I'm wondering, which of these two is more beneficial? I feel a better balance connection with Sirsasana I, but I feel that Sirsasana II works the arms more. Thanks in advance!

Searched + didn't find this: Core & back strengthening for someone with hypermobility?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 08:11 PM PDT

    Asking for a friend.

I've got a good friend who is hypermobile, but also definitely has some kind of other chronic Thing going on—they're in the process of diagnosis, and that's obviously been put on hold due to the priorities doctors currently have. That said, their joints slipping out of alignment is causing a lot of pain, and we can't just wait for the pandemic to be over for their quality of life to improve.

I'm finding a lot of tips from a lot of sources on How To Practice Yoga While Hypermobile, but I am struggling to 1) discern what a reliable source is and 2) find things that focus on strengthening back, core, and- general torso muscles, whatever you'd call that. They've told me that kind of thing would be helpful. In the past they were a swimmer, and they know low-impact exercise is good for them, which is why they're looking at yoga now.

In addition, I'm seeing "how to do this pose without hurting yourself," but not "this is the best pose to do." Goals are building up strength in that central column of the body but also anywhere, and having something worthwhile to do.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Videos would be awesome.

Sensitive knees swollen after week of yoga - looking for tips on healing/preventing inflammation!

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 06:12 PM PDT

Hello! Hope you are all safe and well.

I have very sensitive knees for a 22 yr old and have been trying to keep my new yoga routine very gentle and slow paced. After a week of very calming yoga I did a full body deep stretch for beginners that lasted around 25-30 minutes last night and my knees seem somewhat swollen this morning. I normally drink turmeric tea to help with inflammation but I have a bleeding disorder and too much turmeric causes me to bruise a lot, so I was wondering whether anyone here had experience w yoga& sensitive knees that could give me tips on healing and any stretches or positions that could get the inflammation down. Thank you very much!

How Do You Girls With Big Boobs Do Yoga?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT

Me personally i've never done yoga. But bc we're quarantined and i'm bored every single day with literally nothing to do, i wanted to give it a try. And after trying it out for like an hour or so, i can honestly say that some of these poses are NOT meant for women with big boobs and this is coming from a girl who's a DD cup. Most of the poses were kinda easy for me bc i'm a pretty flexible person, but poses like cobra pose, locust pose, plough pose, and bow pose were literally torture for me. My boobs kinda hurt after my "yoga session" bc i literally smashed my boobs against my floor when i was on my stomach in some of these poses. I already don't like laying on my stomach so the fact that i even tried these says something

I won't ever be doing yoga again (not bc of my boobs tho) but for the women with big breasts who actually do yoga, how the hell do you do or get through these poses? Does it not hurt your boobs or do you just deal with it? (p.s if you have small boobs and you do yoga, you're welcome to answer too if you want)

All YogaWorks locations in NYC to close permanently

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 08:50 AM PDT

Per the Unionize Yoga group of YogaWorks teachers (https://www.facebook.com/yogateacherunion/), the CEO just announced that all three New York City studios will permanently close.

I can't find any word on this on their public social channels and I have not received an email as a member but wow, what a shame. I am sure many small studios will close during this time so I can't decide if it's more or less surprising that one backed by a massive VC firm is closing too.

Very sad to lose this community. Plus, of course I have a $$$ mat in storage with them which I guess I have to somehow obtain. so I am hoping an email announcement goes out to students soon.

Which effort level do you strive for with self-practice at home vs. following a class?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 04:19 PM PDT

I've had my own daily practice (ashtanga lite) for a few years now and I spend about 20 minutes a day on this. For classes, these are typically longer (60-90 minutes) but I also notice that following along forces me to hold the asanas longer and come into breathing more steadily.

I'm curious to hear whether other yogis who also have a self-practice notice as big a difference here. Am I just lazy in my self-practice? I'm considering pivoting to fewer asanas done with more effort/breathing in my self-practice.

I read some nice comments here about the benefits of a class, I'm mostly interested in how yogis in this community think about effort between the two: https://www.reddit.com/r/yoga/comments/byvhu1/is_at_home_yoga_good_enough_or_should_i_start/

    Essential Workers

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 03:46 PM PDT

I'm interested in hearing from essential workers. What specific needs are those of you who are out in the grocery stores, hospitals, delivery, and other industries feeling right now? Mentally, emotionally, and physically. I'm putting together a yoga class for essential workers and as I've barely left my home since March 13, I can only imagine what your realities have been for the last month plus. What would serve you in a led yoga practice right now?

    Cheap Yoga Mats

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 11:38 AM PDT

Does anyone know of any cheap yoga mats that work well? I just got into yoga and I really love it but sadly, I am out of a job during this pandemic. So I would love to find something that does the job for less than 30. Advice?

I’m looking for a deep stretch video similar to this one

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 06:30 AM PDT

https://youtu.be/GLy2rYHwUqY (Total Body Yoga - Deep Stretch - Yoga With Adrienne)

While in quarantine I've gotten my roommates into yoga. One of them is really into this yoga with Adriene video that focuses on flexibility. Thing is, I don't like doing the same video more than once a week. I get bored and start going through the motions rather than quality of movement. Can anyone recommend similar videos that we can try out?
