| Posted: 26 Jul 2020 02:10 AM PDT I'm trying to understand the relation between tight muscles and muscles that are more sensitive when foam rolling. What does it mean if a muscle is more sensitive to pressure? Is it true that as you get more flexible, this sensitivity gets less? And if so, why? Both anecdotal and scientific answers are welcome! | Ankle flexibility not improving Posted: 25 Jul 2020 05:23 AM PDT Hi all My ankles are inflexible, which is one of the factors in why I can't squat past parallel. I tried the flexibility test where you try to touch the wall with your knee without your heel leaving the ground. This test here: https://youtu.be/U7woPNLUT3Q A few months ago I could touch the wall 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) away with my left knee, and 3 inches (7.6 cm) away with my right knee. I've been doing the banded joint mobilisations found here: https://youtu.be/ILSbK8RnGdI. I've been doing these for months now, and just did the flexibility test again and there's been no improvements at all. This is where I have been placing the band when doing the exercises. I think this is right. What other options are there for this? Should my band be tighter? Are there better exercises for this? [link] [comments] | ||
| Internal hip pain after stretching Posted: 25 Jul 2020 11:15 PM PDT To give some background I'm a 7 foot tall basketball player who has played the sport almost all my life but I've always had TERRIBLE hip mobility. I remember being a kid and not being able to kick a soccer ball with the side of my foot, but I've only recently realized it was because even back then I didn't have the hip mobility for it, so this is something I've struggled with almost all my life. It hasn't held me back much but it is extremely frustrating for me and I'm trying hard to fix it. Anyway, I've been trying to work on my hip mobility the last little while but my biggest problem is that before I can feel any significant stretch I feel a sharp pain in an interior part of my hips. Not any type of muscular pain that I've ever felt but a sharp piercing pain that I can't describe too well. I've stretched all parts of my body but have never felt anything like this before (only when I have actually injured one of my hips before) For example if I'm laying face up and bring one of my feet to the just outside the other knee (almost like a butterfly stretch but single legged and foot a bit farther out to the side) and begin to externally rotate my knee down towards the ground I can't get too far without an extremely sharp pain in my hip. If I decide to sit in the position where there is pain for about a minute, it only feels like it aggravates it even further and the hip doesn't give any ground. I should mention it is exactly the same for both hips not just for one. So what I've been doing that seems to help is hip cars. Both versions where I'm laying on my side or I'm standing up. That twist at the knee helps loosen the area and then I feel I'm able to stretch the muscles around it after as I can get a far better range of motion when the pain is gone. But there is a big problem. Yesterday for example I spent the better part of an hour stretching and I've never seen my hips so flexible. It was one of those moments where I felt genuine happiness because I've never been able to do it before. So I even took a hot bath after to further loosen the muscles. My problem is that only about 15-20 minutes after I stopped moving my hips the internal pain came back but way stronger. Last night before I went to bed it literally felt like I was injured in both hips and it hurt to even turn my foot. It didn't feel like muscle pain is what's important. I've worked out hundreds of times and know what muscle pain feels like, this isn't it. I'm writing this about 36 hours after my stretching yesterday morning and its beginning to feel a bit better. But the problem I run into is that I stretch, I get intense pain for a day or two, and in that time I end up tensing right back up. Very long post but I'd appreciate any insight. Thank you for taking the time to read this! End of post but if anyone is wondering what other movements trigger the pain there are a few more I can think of: When I sit in a chair leaning forward, so if I was to sit in a chair and lean completely forward chest down to my thighs for a few minutes I get intense pain when I feel extremely sore. Again not like a sore muscle but genuine pain in both hips. And the WORST one for me is if I stand up and spread my legs out as wide as I can, and attempt to squat down or hinge forward I get terrible pain. However if I start in a low squat and then spread my legs far apart I can sit in that position, but if I try to stand up from there i am completely unable and am met with great pain in that area. It's almost like when I spread my legs there's a major stop in my range of motion between me standing up and squatting down as I'm unable to get up both up and down from the same position. | Did i pull my hamstring or is it just a strain? Posted: 25 Jul 2020 08:08 AM PDT Hi guys! I have been trying to do front splits and a couple of days back, me being over enthusiastic stretched a lil too far. I heard a pop somewhere below my glutes and it started to hurt. The pain wasn't too bad but, it was definitely not normal and i was not able to walk properly. Two days later, the pain has gone and i can walk without any limp. 1. Do you think i pulled my hamstring? 2. Will i ever be able to get front splits? 3. Can you please tell me how to recover? 4. Can I safely try to improve other flexibility without hurting my hamstring? Eg- wheel pose, butterfly, or king pigeon pose? Thank you so much for helping! I cannot tell you how scared and heartbroken i am. I really want to be more flexible and I don't want my stupid mistake to undo all the progress I've made. [link] [comments] |
