Ashtanga yoga: Led primary counting philosophies |
| Led primary counting philosophies Posted: 09 May 2020 12:27 PM PDT With so many recordings of led primaries, and even live broadcasts accessible these days, it occurs to me that there are relatively few that adhere to a measured count. By "measured" I mean with a dispassionate attitude on part of the teacher, and not so much in the sense of with the precision of a metronome. Most commonly, I observe what I would call the "remedial" count: for example, a student in the group holds or bends their legs in navasana, and as a result we are all being sent into the navasana timewarp where counts last double. A variant of the remedial count is the "anticipatory remedial count" which Sharath seems to be a master of: because he knows that students tend to rush through catvari, he throws in a panca delay at strategic places and then revels in his success when students fall into the trap: "why rushing?" The other common type is what I call the "compassionate" count: rather than sticking with the set rhythm, extra delays are granted so that "everyone" might be able to get their leg folded or lotused, accomplish a twist, catch a bind etc. Often, the compassion goes so far as to inventing an extra breath. Or just not counting the vinyasa altogether and just commanding an exhalation when it finally seems time to move on to the state of the asana. If the main value of a led class is to reset correct and measured vinyasa, does it then make sense to build in these distortions or do they distract from the purpose? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 09 May 2020 09:22 AM PDT I get seriously dizzy sometimes when coming out of half lotus standing forward bend, the sitting version is totally fine though. I'm fine in other forward folds too. Does anyone know why this is and if it's a thing to worry about or just a thing to work through? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 09 May 2020 08:22 AM PDT Hello! I started my practice a few years ago with a $20 mat from Amazon and it's now starting to fall apart. I've been looking at a replacement, and I'm torn between Manduka Pro and Yoloha (likely Native Cork model, though I can't seem to find a good comparison to their other models). I was wondering if anyone here had any preferences between the two. Cheers! [link] [comments] |
