Meditation: A discovery meditation has brought to me

A discovery meditation has brought to me

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:01 PM PDT

Before my daughter was conceived I had repeated dreams of a blonde haired girl standing in a field next to a farm house waving to me. At the time, and until recently, I thought it was a sign our first born was to be a girl. And it was. And she has the same blonde hair and smile. And as she grows I've realized she looks almost just like me. I started taking meditation seriously just within the last month. This girl visits me often. Today I realized that girl is me. She is my soul, my undhindered self, full of joy and kindness before all of the abuse and hurt. And she's reaching out to me. To be loved. To reconnect. To forgive and move on and live in joy and content with her. And it's floored me and moved me and brought me to many tears.

I just burst into tears thinking about how much meditation has helped me through what's going on right now.

I don't have much to say. Only that meditation has been absolutely vital to me right now.

Crippling anxiety, PTSD, but I finally feel at peace.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:21 PM PDT

Just want to share this moment with y'all.

I've dealt with pretty severe anxiety and PTSD my entire life, to the point that my body starts to react strangely to the stress - swollen lymph nodes, dizziness, twitching. My doctors eventually figured out it's all stress induced. It wasn't until I guided my distraught friend through mediation, that I hit a breakthrough. All it takes is a few minutes of being present and mindful every once in a while to make a big change in your life. I'm no longer fearful of confrontation, I no longer play down my strengths, and I forgive myself for my weaknesses. I'm thankful for all that I've grown, and those who helped me grow, even if I strayed off the path quite a few times.

Meditation alone didn't lead me here, but it brought up the positives in my life in ways I didn't see before. I'm thankful for that.

    30 minute is a game-changer

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:27 PM PDT

I am not the first to say this and certainly won't be the last, nevertheless I want to contribute.

I have been meditating for a few months for a few minutes a day. I started with 5 minutes a day and then prolongwd to 13 minutes in the last six months. It's not much, but I thought it was ok because I'm slow at these things and didn't want to push it too much.

And three days ago at the morning I told myself "hey let's swap the numbers and try 31 minutes instead of 13, just for fun"..

Oh man. It was so soothing, like I did not see patterns or anything, but the inner piece is really something. I did another 31 in the evening that day and basically do double 31s everyday since then and I can't get enough of that, it's so different from the original 13 minutes.

I am still at start so I know I might have problems keeping this pace in the future, but this realization was HUGE for me.

    Thanks for reading.

    Trusting my breath

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:17 PM PDT

The average person breathes over 20,000 times per day. Our bodies do this automatically without effort or thought on our part. Though through meditation, conscious awareness of our breath can bring one into the moment and cultivate mindfulness.

If you're like me, sometimes I struggle to use breath as a focus object for meditation. Sometimes it feels like I am not getting enough air or am not breathing out enough air.

I must remind myself in moments like these that my body knows what it is doing. Breath is something it does without my permission or my control. I must learn to trust my breath.

If I simply become aware of the way my body already breathes, all worry can subside and I can just enjoy my time of meditation.

    I hope this helps.

PS... if you're someone who has trauma related to breathing, or you have a physical condition, your breath might not be the best focus object for meditation. This is just one of many ways to meditate.

Does meditation help on anger issues

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:27 PM PDT

I noticed I get irritated easily when people are taking too long or don't understand me immediately. Sometimes I can be a bit too harsh when I speak. So I was wondering if meditation has helped you with anger issues/impatience?

I have never done meditation before but I have been told it also helps with anger issues - I haven't met anyone who meditated for that reason so that's why I'm here 😁

On the brink of giving up on mediation

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:50 PM PDT

I guess maybe I need a different approach, but I don't know how to approach it at this point. I've been getting into mediation for a couple months, and I have ADHD and ADD so it's difficult for me to have consistently good sessions.

I've tried methods such as"think about what your next thought will be and you'll be thoughtless" and focusing on breath, body sensations, observing thoughts but not giving them power.

Nothing is working long term and consistently. Has anyone else had this issue for a while and then what did you do to suddenly find what works for you?

Started crying uncontrollably during guided meditation

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:54 PM PDT

I had a virtual guided mediation class today. The instructor asked us to focus on the "happiest moment in our lives". Somehow, when he said that, my mind thought of the exact opposite - my mom's death. Without going into a lot of details, she had cancer and she died from complications due to surgery. The instructor said "Hold on to the moment of happiness" and I thought of my mom's last days, when she was struggling to breathe, when she couldn't eat and when she couldn't talk. I finally started crying uncontrollably. When the instructor said "focus the happiness on your legs", "focus the happiness on your stomach" etc. I again thought of my mom and how she was too weak to walk, how she died without eating.

After the class was over, the instructor asked for feedback. The other students were like "I feel so light and airy. I feel sleepy. I feel rested." I did not say anything.

I don't mediate a lot, so I am not sure if this is common. But when you have mental anguish, is it common to think about them?

Anyone else avoiding meditation because it feels like an obligation or a "should do" to control stress, vs. something to seek out because it's enjoyable?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:13 AM PDT

I consider myself as having a deep mindfulness practice for the past 3 years and have been meditating on and off for 11 years. I follow Thich Nhat Hanh's school of "engaged Buddhism" and it really helped me make positive and transformative changes so my life (career, relationships etc.) more fully reflected my internal values. At my previous stressful job, it was invaluable to decrease my threshold of anxiety so I could still function. And during meditation retreats I loved disconnecting from electronics and experiencing true contentment for the first time in my life.

BUT, over the past few months I have found myself avoiding or not making time for my daily meditation practice. Somehow in my head it seems like an obligation, something to do to decrease stress (kind of like medicine) rather than something you do because you enjoy it. I skip out on my weekly mindfulness group gathering (on Zoom) because I want to relax or work on other things or somehow it seems like a downer and not fun, even though when I go I do enjoy it. But when I do "force" myself to meditate for 10 mins I realize how stressed and nonstop my mind is and how much I feel I still do need meditation.

To be clear I do want to "re-activate" my daily mindfulness practice but am struggling to. Has anyone else run into this particular block before? Just curious where it came from and how you responded.

This is my first post here, just starting to explore this part of Reddit, so not sure if it's typical to ask questions like this. Thanks in advance!

    Meditation accountability group?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:28 PM PDT

I'm on my journey to make meditation a lifetime habit. I'm on my 10th consecutive day right now, and I would like to know if there's such a thing as a meditation accountability group, in which the participants can check on each other, motivate each other and share experiences. Thank you

Is it actually fine to let the mind wonder?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 02:57 PM PDT

I've noticed the only time I'm remembering any part of the guided meditations I do has been "you may notice your mind has wondered but that's ok".

All I can seem to do is acknowledge that, that part happened but then it's back to my mind having a million distracting thoughts.

    QFT is... Profound

    Posted: 16 May 2020 02:07 AM PDT

Just wanted to share something with you all. The following description might have a few holes in it - but I hope not too many.

Quantum Field Theory is quite profound. When I first read up about it I was reminded of some core Hindu/Buddhist philosophies...

Consider this: All electrons are just disturbances in an all-pervasive 'electron field'. In a sense electrons don't actually exist... There are no waves , just disturbances in a vast ocean. Waves can form , interact and collapse ... Just like electrons

This is true for all fundamental particles - quarks , leptons (electrons and neutrinos are leptons) and bosons (photons are bosons). Each kind of particle is just a ripple in its corresponding omni-present field. Mathematically these 'ripples' are wave functions and the interaction of different ripples creates more complex and elaborate wave functions... force interactions, creation of atoms , molecules and so on... And thus, reality is weaved.

This is the basis of Quantum Field theory (QFT). Of course there are other theories , like string theory , that are also quite profound in their own right. But for now QFT is the one that's widely accepted as our best understanding of reality.

(I originally posted this on r/psychonaut , but was reminded of meditation ... I guess this is an interesting subject for you all)

    Peace.

What's the most important lesson meditation taught you?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:32 AM PDT

I’ve been experiencing tingling sensations and muscle spasms duration meditation recently.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Title says it all. These muscle spasms occur frequently throughout my sitting sessions and I got curious and now I'm seeking answers. Perhaps I am experiencing a form of vibration? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :)

    How do I enjoy being?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 01:01 AM PDT

I want a hobby or something, anything to enjoy. Even before all this covid ive been bored within 5 minutes of doing some hobby I've tried everything and I really just want to be able to sit myself down and enjoy something instead of spending hours and hours on my phone or watching TV. I really really want to do things and the only time I do enjoy "hobbies" is when I do them with someone else. I don't and cant rely on others so what do I do?

    Mindfulness and Company

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:38 PM PDT

I'm a college student who's been toying with meditation and mindfulness for the past few years, and I've noticed that my ability to remain mindful decreases significantly in the company of others, no matter if they are friends or family, or relative strangers. I'm not sure what's going on, whether it takes so much of my attention to focus on these other people, or if I overthink when I speak, but it seems to affect me greatly, as I fall into mindless habits, and then it hurts my relationships when I avoid people I like so that I can regain my awareness. Does anyone have any similar experiences or advice?

Edit: I guess a better way to put it is: how do I remain mindful in the company of others?

Do we always need to be alone while meditating?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:18 PM PDT

I m meditating since last 20 days now. 2 biggest hindrances are, my thoughts ( mind is like an electron, the more you try to make it still, more it becomes easy to get distracted) and people ( when someone comes in vicinity while meditating, it becomes a big big distraction!!) Any help, any tips to help me overcome these problems? Thanks!

Techniques you have found useful relinquishing visual imagery of your body and feeling raw sensations while practicing mindfulness

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:28 PM PDT

I have been doing the mindfulness meditation practice for a few weeks now using the Waking up App by Sam Harris. In one of his guided meditations, he suggests to relinquish the visual imagery of having a hand or body and feel the raw sensations. In some of my earlier attempts, I found it easier to do so. However, as I have practiced more, I have found myself experiencing the thought of relinquishing the visual imagery and feeling the raw sensation instead of experiencing it more nakedly. This makes me feel that I am somehow further away from feeling the raw sensation. Anyone else who has gone through this? And any techniques/ perspectives/ mindset they have found useful overcoming this.
    Thanks for your reply

What other methods can I look into as a beginner if I don't feel any sensation of breath anywhere except when I try to force deep breaths.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:36 PM PDT

Would sitting under running water or in the sun and fixating on my sweat be good options? I would appreciate any advice. I've tried to get into meditation quite a few times but each time, upon seeing no real improvement in my ability to meditate I've given up, maybe I should try changing my technique.

I would appreciate any other methods or advice.
