Graduating from Yoga w Adrienne to increase flexibility Posted: 18 May 2020 03:33 PM PDT Hi! I am finishing up 2 months of back to back yoga with Adrienne challenges. I loved them and would like to continue. I am not a fan of flow but would like to increase flexibility and get better al balancing poses and inversions (eventually). Which yoga challenge or channels do you guys recommend as the next steps? [link] [comments] |
Favourite shoulder and upper back openers Posted: 18 May 2020 12:04 PM PDT Hi folks. I've been having wrist pain recently and my yoga teacher thinks it's my wrists over compensating for my tight shoulders. What are your favourite shoulder / upper back opening moves? Or has anyone had the same problem and found something that worked? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 18 May 2020 05:58 PM PDT Hey yogis, Are there benefits for holding asanas for extended lengths of time? I'm talking 10-20mins or maybe more. If there are, please share! Personal experiences/routines are more than welcome too! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 May 2020 02:43 PM PDT I noticed that in most yoga classes, the teacher would talk a lot. Not just verbal cues and guidance but even sharing stories and spiritual tidbits during the class and in the middle of the pose. I understand that it's supposed to be inspirational but the monologue can sometimes be distracting. Do actual yoga gurus also teach like this? [link] [comments] |
Cramps in foot arch during some poses? Posted: 18 May 2020 05:59 PM PDT Like a lot of people stuck at home, I took up yoga recently. I've been practicing about an hour a day for the past 10 days using Down Dog, alternating hatha and vinyasa. For the most part it's felt great. But poses like tree, lifting and opening the knee, the various warrior/lunge poses, chair poses, and twisting poses that I go into from warrior/lunge/chair, cause pain in my arches that sometimes leads to cramps and I have to release the poses early. I guess it's basically any pose where my feet aren't aligned (plus chair for some reason). It's annoying because I can't even focus on my posture or breathing, just on how much it hurts. I did yoga for a year in high school (best year of gym class ever!) over ten years ago and I don't remember having this problem. My feet have always been pretty flat and they start to ache whenever I'm barefoot, even just walking around in my tiny apartment. I read that building muscle tone in my back/hips/legs will help, but I'm wondering what I should do in the meantime. Should I push myself through the poses that cause pain and only ease off if it gets close to cramping, or should I cut those poses out entirely/do them for much shorter than I'm directed? Is there anything I can do outside of yoga (and without access to a gym or trainer) that will help? Edit: Wanted to add that I hydrate really, really well and I only drink water aside from one cup of tea a day. I don't have problems with muscle cramps outside of this issue. [link] [comments] |
Got split for first time but can’t do it for a few days now Posted: 18 May 2020 05:51 PM PDT When I first got my split I felt like a knot was untied near the upper middle of my hamstring. It's didn't hurt at all but I haven't been able to go completely flat for a few days now. I can run and do all my regular activities. I don't feel any pain other than mild soreness when using/stretching hamstrings. Anyone know a solution for this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 May 2020 04:42 PM PDT [COMP] So, I've just about managed to get down my crane pose but I'm not sure if my knees are in the right position. I've been trying to get them firmly planted in my armpits but they always end up sliding down while I'm getting into the pose and end up on my upper triceps. Is this correct? If not, does anyone have any tips for how to keep my knees in my armpits? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 May 2020 09:28 AM PDT I've loved yoga for a good while. I love how it relaxes me after work and the effect on my body. However I've always looked at it from a purely physical, biomechanical point of view and avoided the more spiritual elements. Am I missing the point, and will it mean I never really 'get it'? Yoga on Carpet - Is there risk of injury? Posted: 18 May 2020 03:24 PM PDT Does anyone know if there is a medical opinion on doing yoga on carpet (mat on carpet)? With COVID my wife has moved her practicing from the Yogaworks Studio to our home and our rooms suited to practicing are carpeted. I'm worried that she's putting herself at risk. (we're on the back side of our fifties). Any guidance would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Can too much thunderbolt pose contribute to reflux? Posted: 18 May 2020 01:54 PM PDT I was using this pose to help increase digestive strength , I read not to use it if you have a stomach disorder. Since practicing it regularly in the last couple days I have gotten a very strong reflux...just posting in case anyone knows of any correlation. I will cut it out for the time being [link] [comments] |

Posted: 18 May 2020 12:46 PM PDT Hello all, I was scheduled to complete my YTT early May but covid has now postponed me getting my certification. Pre covid, I had an opportunity to teach lined up with a studio for dates after my official certification date. Since covid has happened, the studio I had the opportunity with said I could still teach classes with them but a.) it'd be virtual and b.) I wouldn't get paid until I'm certified. I'm fine with both. My question is about insurance. I've taught 3 classes so far without being insured (I know, so dumb! I thought if the studio was covered I was as well) so my question is, am I able to get insurance without my certification and if so, what company do yoga teachers recommend? Also, should I ensure the studio includes me in their waiver or should I have my own? Any help is appreciated! I'm in CT USA [link] [comments] |
Difficulty in Wide legged Fold and seated Wide Leggded Fold Posted: 18 May 2020 12:28 PM PDT Hello, hope everyones keeping well and safe at this time. When trying to perform a seated wide legged forward fold, I feel I am restricted from folding down towards the floor, even with all my weight shifted forwards. In order to actually get any stretch up through my hamstrings and groin I have to cross my arms and lift them out and move the weight further away from my body acting as weight to pull me down! I dont experience this in any straight leg folds and feel as though my hamstrings are relativeley flexible. Any idea where I might be tight or why Im struggling here? Also, I think it may be related that in Wide Legged Fold and Seated Wide Legged Fold (this one more so) I experience some pain/tightness on the inside of my knee. It doesnt feel like its in the joint itself but more in the tendon/ muscle leading to the knee. Im not looking for perfect medical advice but more to see if anyone has experienced anything similar in thier practice due to their own tighteness and how they might have overcome it? Thank You. Posted: 18 May 2020 11:37 AM PDT Hi there! I injured my lower back yesterday by from poor alignment choices during a practice. I am wondering what kind of stretches/self care i should practice as I heal? I can usually do forward folds but right now it even slightly hurts to hold my head down. I have attempted to light cat/cow (but can only do a very light cat, cow is fine). I am a 29 male who is fairly flexible and in shape - - however I was attempting moves without guidance that I had previously done in my early 20s (dog to flip dog to wheel), and I clearly effed up! Haha. Seeking advice on how to care for my injury before I exasperate it. [link] [comments] |
Users of Down Dog - do you always stick with one style (e.g. vinyasa or hatha) or switch it up? Posted: 18 May 2020 07:50 AM PDT I've ONLY done the vinyasa full practices until now, but I kind of want to try out some of the others. Do you vary which styles you use, or find one you like and stick with it? [link] [comments] |
Trauma and Spiritual Progression - how is trauma framed in yogic practise and progress? Posted: 18 May 2020 02:32 PM PDT Hello lovely people. I'm posting in hope of getting some leads on a question that has been bubbling away in me for a while now. I want to understand how the processing and resolving of trauma fits into eastern contemplative religions such as buddhism, and their models of spiritual progress, such as the chakra system. Does it even fit at all? A little background is probably useful here. I became interested in meditation and its incredible possibilities around 4 years ago. Fast forward a year and a half and my practise was going well. Then I suffered a traumatic event which left me with PTSD, which was compounded by negative childhood experiences. Fast forward to now, and I've spent the past 9 months undertaking EMDR therapy, and am just coming out the other side. For those unfamiliar with EMDR, a quick explanation is that it can be thought of as course of guided meditations, where you explore your trauma in the comforting presence of a therapist, allowing you to process the memories, and move past them. The PTSD, was horrible, very strong generalised anxiety all the time + flashbacks. However, it forced me to face my childhood trauma during therapy, which has undoubtably been a good thing for me. In fact, it has been so transformational, that I consider it a spiritual journey.(Internal work which has significantly improved my quality of life). Now that I am finishing this therapy, I have been looking for a way to continue my internal progress. Given that the PTSD mainly manifested as making me feel very unsafe, and anxious, my hypothesis was that the therapeutic work I had been doing amounted to balancing my root chakra (associated with safety and security). Upon reading up on the topic however, it appears that the therapy doesn't fit neatly into the chakra system as I expected. Additionally, when I attempted to meditate, back when my PTSD was in full force, being mindful was so painful that i could barely manage more than 30 seconds before I became overwhelmed and had to stop. To me it really feels like without EMDR to give me a solid base, the spiritual path just wasn't open to me. I was in such a place of pain that any mindfulness seemed unbearable, and any dissociative states were terrifying. I've been trying to find some resources which place trauma into context within the models of spiritual progress presented by buddhism etc., but I haven't been able to find anything thus far. Trauma, especially childhood trauma, seems to have such a central role in mental health, that I can't believe that such wise traditions would not mention it in some form. I would love if anyone could shed some light on this issue. Is this need to lay groundworks before starting the journey of awareness discussed in the contemplative religions? Is resolving trauma in any way an aim of meditation and spiritual progress in these religions? Is there anyone who's attempted to mesh the two together? Would love a lead to try and solve this mystery! TLDR; Trauma focused therapy and the practise of mediation can both offer spiritual progress, yet they seem to be very different. Is trauma a part of the models that Eastern contemplative religions present? [link] [comments] |
