    Shocked by the positive effects

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:24 PM PDT

I was a former D1 athlete, I considered my self a very fit and active person. Always going for runs, working out, lifting weights etc. One thing always stayed constant I would always have pain in my back or legs and I ALWAYS felt slow and tired no matter how much rest I got or how well I ate. I would feel sluggish for a way to long no matter what I did, recovery runs didn't work, nor did recovery workouts.

I started doing yoga about three weeks ago just looking to give it a try to see what happens. I have to say the benefits have been life-changing. From my actual body to my mindset it has made me feel amazing. I have been running 5 miles a day something I never could do when I was not doing yoga, I no longer feel a week after my workouts or crazy tired the next day. I actually feel like I have more energy. I'll do yoga before my work out and after and god it is truly amazing. The first week was hell as my body had never done some of the moves before but now only in week three, I see my body growing. I am so excited to keep seeing the progress!

Alright to my fellow men, how do you position your testicles?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 05:36 AM PDT

I'm trying to do prone press up and cobra pose, I follwed a tutorial video of a guy but at no point does he mention about the testicles. Am I doing something wrong here? I need a diagram of where I'm supposed to shove my testicles.

    Yoga harem pants?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 06:00 PM PDT

Are harem pants good for practicing yoga? Some days I don't want tight yoga pants so these look like they would allow for enough movement and still be loose and comfy. What are some good places to purchase that aren't over $100 a pair and not polyester?

How has yoga benefited other areas of your life?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 05:40 PM PDT

One of my favourite parts of yoga are the insights that the instructor gives you in to your practise. I do a lot of running and end up with hip and back pain from that in combination with having a desk job, so yoga is a great tool for me to help reduce the impact this has on my body. Fiji McAlpine has a series of yoga for runners on doyogawithme and she talks through Mountain Pose which I used to just think of as a super basic pose and didn't pay much attention to it. However, she talks about how you should tuck your tailbone, tighten your abs etc and this is the same alignment you should be in whilst running. It was a massive "aha" moment for me and I've had a lot less pain whilst keeping this in mind during my jogs. This is probably obvious advice for runners but it wasn't until I had it spelled out to me during yoga that I really became mindful of it.

I'm curious to know what other moments like this you've all experienced?

    Big mat studio etiquette question

    Posted: 11 May 2020 06:48 AM PDT

Hey everyone! First time posting on this sub, but I've had a question in the back of my head for a couple of years I want to ask.

I'm 6'4" with broad shoulders and a heavy set. I've struggled a lot with yoga until I invested in a massive mat I could fully lay down on (26"x85") and it totally transformed my practice from feeling claustrophobic to freeing and wonderful. I usually practice at home. But from time to time I like to go into a studio when I can afford it. I always stick to the back row and really focus on not taking impending other's space during the class.

But I sometimes get some dirty looks when I take my big mat to a studio, which I totally understand since there is limited space and I'm a fairly massive human being. What's the etiquette in the situation? Are there any instructors of studio owners who can give me some feedback? I just want to be respectful of others. Do I need another mat? What should I do?

TLDR: I'm 6'4" can I bring my oversized mat to a studio if it's the only mat I really fit on?

Favorite YWA 30 Day Yoga series?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:04 PM PDT

Hi All, I'm getting back on my mat after a bit of a hiatus. I've decided to ease back in with one of Adriene's - now famous - 30 day challenges. But there are now so many to choose from! Anyone who has done multiple ones have a recommendation? I did one the first year and/or two she started them, but haven't done any more recent ones.

You are not thoughts, emotions or sensations, you are that highest intelligence and awareness of the universe that perceives and is aware of them

    Posted: 11 May 2020 10:06 AM PDT

Thoughts, emotions and sensations are not something that can help or be useful to the highest intelligence, awareness itself. Thoughts, emotions and sensations all appear to that which you are, because you are that which is able to perceive them. They wouldn't exist without you. You are not dependant on them, they simply appear because you are. You are such a vast intelligence that simply everything appears within you, the whole universe itself, including thoughts, emotions and sensations.

You do not need to be attached to any thoughts, emotions and sensations, nor to be attached to anything that appears within that which you are, for they have nothing to do with what you truly are, you are not affected by anything that is, because you are that which is. You just stay that which you are, stay in the silence of your own being. The highest intelligence does not give any importance to any thoughts, emotions and sensations because it is aware of its own silence.

The highest intelligence does not use thoughts, emotions and sensations in order to be. It is completely free from all of these appearing phenomena, it is not the phenomena and not the creator of the phenomena, it is all imagined within that highest intelligence which you are. You are not bound to something that appears within you, you are that greater in which it appears. You must stay in awareness of what you truly are, you must trust in that which you are.

The highest intelligence won't be heard, because it doesn't like to talk. It would rather simply be, be in its own divine being and simply be aware of the vastness. The highest intelligence is easily perceived when one simply turns its attention on one's self. It is easily perceived because it is all that is. Every single thing in existence is that highest intelligence and an expression of the highest intelligence. There is nothing but the highest intelligence alone, pretending to be certain forms, pretending to be thought, pretending to be emotions, sensations, humans, life, death, these are all things it pretends to be, but in truth there is only itself alone. All these are not true, but appearances, when you believe these appearances you lose sight of what is true, the highest intelligence that is ever-present. The highest intelligence is the most obvious thing that is, but it is so subtle that everything misses it. It doesn't take much to realize that presence that you are. Truly you are that.

The highest intelligence does not give in to any doubt, that which gives in to doubt is not the highest intelligence, it is merely thought, and that highest intelligence is aware of that thought. The highest intelligence has no fear of the unknown, since it is itself the unknown, and it is able to know itself through that which is perceived. By realizing all that appears, appears within the highest intelligence, including your own sense of self, even that dissolves into the silence of the highest intelligence that you are.

Every single thought you entertain, every single emotion you entertain, every single sensation you entertain, simply takes you away from the recognition of what you truly are. Do realize that you are simply beyond them, there is nothing to do with them. Both what appears to be "good" and "bad" is the highest intelligence itself. There is no good and no bad, these are just thoughts, the highest intelligence doesn't see good or bad, it only sees itself and is what it is.

    Yoga, Gurus and Scandal

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:15 AM PDT

I am really interested in how the community here deals with the scandals in yoga? You don't have to dig too far into any particular tradition and find sexual assault by teachers and gurus, cult-like behaviour and gaslighting of victims by other followers. People who voice often amazing wisdom act in such despicable and hypocritical ways, and gaslight those who object, it is so incredibly disheartening.

I love yoga,it has changed my life, I love the wisdom and philosophy of life not just the asanas. I get so excited when I find a teaching that deepens my knowledge and teaches me more about myself. But almost inevitably when I learn a bit more, find a lineage or teaching that I want to dig into, I find a rotten core.

I started following a new school recently, and had this experience all over again. The teaching I was following created huge transformation for me in my practice on and off the mat, there is so much wisdom there, but as I dug deeper I found out it was connected to a cult, or at least cult-like behaviour. The guru who is dead was a rapist with at least one conviction but many accusations since the 90's, and those in charge now still either deny his criminal activity or blame the women for tempting him, and venerate him as perfect either way. It's a gross and disgusting feeling knowing where these teachings came from. How do I deal with this kind of cognitive dissonance. How do I respect and honour the victims of rape and gaslighting, who were attacked and threatened by followers, if I still want to access the wisdom and teachings that offer such transformation. How can those teachings even be real?

I feel so frustrated and conflicted and broken hearted, again. I would love some words of advice from others who have grappled with this.

    Beginner Yoga Tips

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:55 PM PDT

    Hey yogis!

What's something you wish you would've known when you were first starting yoga?

I'm creating a beginner's guide and think I've covered most of the bases, but curious to hear what you guys might add.

Can anyone explain why I can basically get my forehead to the ground with a straight back in bound angle pose (with feet all the way in to my groin & knees at the floor) but I can’t even get close to even a 45 degree bend at the waist in a seated forward bend? What poses could help my flexibility?

Just finished 52nd day of yoga

    Posted: 10 May 2020 09:54 PM PDT

And I plan to continue--I started with Adriene's 30 days and just sort of... Kept going! I have been practicing yoga off/on for about 13 years and don't feel like I've ever really gotten past a certain point. Over these past couple months, I have definitely noticed an improvement with flexibility and I am so much more aware of my breath and mind-body connection since I've started my practice. This Quarantine has allowed me the time to really focus on my practice. Some days I can only do 10 minutes but even just those few minutes on my mat completely reset my attitude. I've developed an association with peace and strength and intention as soon as I get on my mat.

I guess I'm here to say that my poses probably don't look perfect, I'm not in super great shape, and I can't do the advanced poses like all the COMPS on here, but I am eternally grateful for what yoga has done for my mental health and overall self compassion. I'm going to continue my daily practice, and who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to do a head stand! (speaking of which, I'm totally open for advice to work toward headstand!)

One hip is more flexible than the other: is it best to try to even out the difference, or treat both sides exactly the same?

I don't even know how it's become like this as I don't do any sports that involve asymmetrical exercise.
