I notice people respond in a certain way that conveys mindfulness, but it comes off to me as douchey and pseudo deep. Anyone else get that vibe? lol

Today is the first time I really understood the idea that I can choose not to engage with thoughts

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:26 PM PDT

I have heard over and over that "I am not my thoughts." This has been hard to accept and understand, even though meditation has me create space between me and my thoughts on the daily. I am an introverted, somewhat spacey person, and although they are not sometimes not helpful, I quite love my thoughts!

Background: I have been meditating for several years. I use the Headspace app. I lost someone important to me recently, and as part of trying to grieve healthfully, I have been focusing on being extra aware of what's happening in my body and turning toward the pain rather than away.

What happened is this: I am a light cigarette smoker but want to stop completely now that I realize they are a form of self-medication for when I want to feel better. I had a pack of cigarettes that I hadn't touched for a few days, but this morning felt urges to smoke them. I observed that each little urge was connected to a stressed, anxious, or sad thought. It could be a thought about my loved one, the upcoming work week, or even a response to something unpleasant on TV.

I felt a debate happening in my thoughts - why it would be okay to smoke vs why it would not be okay. There were compelling reasons for both sides. I also knew that the part of me that wanted to smoke was definitely going to win the debate, it was just a matter of time until I caved. I've noticed mental debates related to urges usually end that way. So I decided to just stop the debate and throw out the cigarettes (irretrievably). I no longer had to listen to the debate, and the urges soon subsided.

This felt like "me" making the decision, rather than "my thoughts" making the decision. My thoughts would have made the opposite decision. This seems like a very clear example that I am not my thoughts. And I see now why some people find mindfulness / meditation techniques helpful with overcoming cravings and addictions.

Just wanted to share this and see if anyone else has examples of this they can share.

    2 weeks straight!

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 03:48 PM PDT

Finally, after saying for 6 months that "I'll meditate every day," I'm headed in the right direction. Haven't missed a day for 2 weeks now. It's not much, but it's honest work. It's a start. Here's to another 14 days.

    Cold showers and meditation

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 10:54 AM PDT

I experienced that cold showers and meditation can be linked to each other. When taking a cold shower you will be completely in the present moment. You will be completely in the now. During this state you cannot observe your thoughts like you can in meditation. But the feeling of the present moment you get when taking a cold shower can help you during meditation. Besides that does a cold shower help you reduce stress levels. Lower stress levels can help you to get into the meditative state more easily.

    Try journaling this today

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:54 AM PDT

    Journal Prompt:

'Where are you settling in your life, and what does that look like?'

This is again quite a good deep reflective exercise. Look at your life and look at where you're settled. It's a tough question to ask yourself.

Sometimes we're conditioned in our life towards things that aren't quite what we want. So get deep and have a look. Allow yourself to feel through this exercise.

Think about the things in your life that are coming up for you and notice how you feel in your body. Are you tightening? Are you open? Are you feeling anxious when you think about it? Or are you getting joy?

Have a think about it, and enjoy.

I think I understand what awareness means

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:25 PM PDT

It means being aware of everything. I was in my bedroom doing a breathing meditation. I was aware of my breathing. I was aware of the meditation app. I was aware of my rain sounds app. Then I became aware of my feet, my stomach, all of me. But it was dark but I remembered I have an aquarium with 2 fish in it. Then I became aware of the lights that were on (fish tank heater, light outside my room peeking in). Then I became aware of so many things all at one.

It was unbelievable. Ive noticed over the past 3 months I get more and more aware and I think I finally understand.

The more things you are aware of during the present moment is a real trip.

    How do I find a mentor/teacher?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I've been meditating 1-2 hours per day for a few years now. I practice silently and with apps, and have found meditation to be transformative in my life.

I want to eventually train to become a meditation teacher. I'm not in a rush, but that's the direction I want to move in.

When and how should I seek a mentor or teacher?

    Meditation and Age

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 12:54 PM PDT

I read a lot of accounts here like, I cried for the first time, or All my anger suddenly disappeared, or I completely gave up marijuana/booze/stimulants. I believe it. Those are spectacular things to happen. But absolute, all-or-nothing transformations like these happen mostly to people in their 20's or 30's (with or without meditation.) I'm 72, so I've learned a few lessons.

I'm facing stuff like the realization that I will never achieve certain of my lifetime goals. Same for my wife. I've read the works of some of the "big hitters"- old, wise masters. But they rarely share personal details about their lives. Maybe it's a Buddhist tendency. There's probably better books out there, but I don't want more books or experts. What I want is to hear from OLD MEDITATORS, like me! I know you're out there. You could PM me if need be.

Has anyone ever cried while meditating?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 08:59 PM PDT

I recently got back into meditation and mindfulness, and I've been using guided meditations (would highly recommend trying out Calm if you haven't already). Some part of it evoked a strong wave of emotion and I began to cry. Is this normal during meditation? I don't know many people who meditate regularly so I'd love to hear about other people's experiences.

    Meditation & music

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:41 AM PDT

A way to get into the meditative state is by listening. The listening is easier when there are more noises. But it can also be distractive when you are going to make sense out of what you are hearing. If you listen, don't make any sense out of what you are hearing. Just let the sounds be. Let them come and go. Just observe. Like you would do with your thoughts.

Music can also help you to stay alert and therefore stay in the present moment.

There is also music with different frequencies which can help you with certain things like for example negative energy.

How do I get off this rollercoaster??!!!

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:31 PM PDT

I feel exhausted to even write this post, but any advice would be appreciated.

Long story short after a somewhat difficult start in life, I have struggled to some degree with mental health as long as I can remember- anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

I first discovered the power of meditation around age 17-18, when I'd go sit in an empty bathtub with a candle lit for an hour and just let my thoughts settle, realizing I often felt much better after.

Anyway, I've been meditating (very) off and on for years since (I'm now 29) and still believe in its power. When it "works" it is the only time I feel free from ADHD (temporarily) or anxiety or just the constant thinking that keeps me miserable and so disconnected from life.

The problem is I just can't seem to take it deeper and overcome my current barriers. I "can't" do it consistently enough- I don't know why, I just can't. When I do, I find it really, really hard to focus. Sometimes I don't even WANT to try and focus. I think I am really attached to my thoughts. I think a LOT, am very bright and creative and like to try and find meaning in things. My brain is vicious in that it's very powerful but it NEVER shuts up.

I don't know if there is any magic trick but I just feel like I have these boundaries or hurdles or mental blocks I can't seem to get past to have a consistent practice or start to see real improvement in how I experience life.

I'm happy to provide more details in any area but didn't want to make this longer than it already is. Thanks for your help.

I meditated for the first time ever.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 04:57 PM PDT

Uh, I just meditated for the first time. I'm not sure if I liked it- in fact, it left me very confused. Recently I've been trying to sharpen my intuition, by recent I mean a few days ago. But that's not the point.
The point is, I heard a young girl's voice while I was meditating for the first time. Now it couldn't have been neighbors or anyone inside my house. Can someone explain this? Did I do something wrong here? is it normal to hear voices?

Anyone ever done any of the Tibetan Meditations?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 11:47 PM PDT

So often on here we see people doing Theravada samatha or vispassana methods or Zen shikantanza style.

I am wondering if anyone here has done any Tibetan Meditation practices like Mahamudra or Dzogchen techniques or some of the Kalachakra type ones?

I meditated today by setting the timer to 10 minutes. It rang much earlier than I expected. Is it a good or bad thing?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:01 AM PDT

I have read this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfimprovement/comments/3o9cgl/how_to_meditate_the_internet_is_full_of_you_dont/

and there's written that "the deeper a meditation is, the slower time flows – so while it may feel like 25 minutes, you'll be extremely surprised if you decide to check and find out it was, in reality, 9 min".

But since I actually had the opposite (timer rang before than I expected), I am wondering if am I doing something wrong or if is it normal.

Meditation retreats in the US During Covid

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 10:54 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a meditation retreat in the US in July. I'm thinking it's possible to do this in a socially distant way, or maybe just going to a mostly empty ashram and doing a personal retreat. I'm In NY but willing to drive almost anywhere in the U.S.

    Any suggestions?

(I did see vipassana is doing one in MA but there's a waitlist)

I decided to write this after a session. I don’t know exactly why, but it felt good.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 06:14 PM PDT

Something I find beautiful is the complexity that's imbedded within our simplistic understanding of life. The questions of why and how linger endlessly. Simplicity only forms when complexity becomes to great for our questions to unravel. We continue to adapt around the endlessly fascinating intricacies that make up our world ...Change is a great thing and being afraid of change is normal. To revolt change is pointless as it is inevitable. Friends grow apart. Families grow apart. The branches in a tree grow apart the galaxies within the foreseeable universe slowly grow apart. The land we live on slowly grows apart...With all these changes new beauty will arise..Being at war with yourself or the people around you will only slow the process of growing, don't fight change.. embrace it.

Sharing my Meditation Experience from today

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:51 PM PDT

    Hello everybody, I hope you're well ♡

Today, during my first meditation in some time, as I went deeper, past my thoughts and ideas, with closed eyes, I eventually saw a slow flashing purple light...then I saw the black outline of an eye and pupil, on rotation...

It was extremely calming, soothing, and gentle.

1.Has anyone else had an experience like this? and 2. Any idea on what the colour purple represents or taps into?

    Meditating without apps?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 11:53 AM PDT

I've been interested in meditation for years now and I tried to do it with apps but they just don't work for me. Hearing someone talk is just so distracting! When I used meditating apps, I always ended up giving up but I'd like to meditate on a regular basis eventually. I came to the conclusion that maybe I should try meditating without apps. Any suggestions on ways I can do this?

    The Goenka Experience

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 04:09 AM PDT

I enjoyed reading other people's experiences at Goenka retreats and wanted to share my own. I know now is not the easiest time to participate, but if you are considering attending a retreat one day you might enjoy reading about my experience. I participated in a retreat at the end of February in eastern Thailand.

Problems with feeling gratitude? Feeling slowly disappeared

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 08:26 AM PDT

Did this ever happen to anybody else? Seems like I get used to feelings quick and after a while I get bored or just have the force the hell out of me to feel something like gratitude or other type of emotions.

After a while even thinking about things That I should be thankful for didn't seem to carry out as much impact as it first did when I learned about that concept.

So I made this YouTube video it's a Meditation session that pushed me to feel gratitude while thinking about things I should be thankful about Everytime I hear thank you.

After a while I even saw a golden orb approach my vision while I had my eyes closed! Fast forward to the present, I developed an habit of feeling thankful and It helped me be able to summon the feeling without even thinking just with the intent.

Check my Video out if you have an issue with feeling higher emotions that will rise you on a vibrational scale!

Let me know how it goes!
