How to do a handstand and how to have good balance in a needle?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 11:11 PM PDT

Hi, I (14F) am aspiring to become a self-taught contortionist mainly because I got inspired by Sofie Dossi & Anna McNulty (both self-taught contortionists).

I have been training my leg and back flexibility everyday since the start of the year so I can achieve a contortion chest stand now.

    Here are my problems :

    1. I can't seem to get a handstand because even if I try to kick up to a wall, my hands always buckle underneath me. However, I'm able to do a frog stand.

    2. When attempting a needle, my balance is super super super bad. I did try to use a wall for assistance, placing one hand at a time SLOWLY so I wouldn't lose balance but I keep falling over.

So, how do I achieve a handstand and a good balance for a needle? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Could Anterior Pelvic Tilt be caused by hip flexor WEAKNESS rather than tightness?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:41 AM PDT

The go-to suggestion for fixing APT seems to be to stretch the hip flexors, but I've stretched mine quite a bit and gained a good bit of flexibility but it doesn't seem to have effected the APT that much.

On the other hand if I look at my body from a movement perspective, the particular movements I think I am the worst at are overhead shoulder mobility and lifting my legs up towards my body. So I'm thinking maybe the latter reveals that my hip flexors are especially weak and this may be causing my APT.

For example, if I sit on the floor like this with my feet together, my knees come apart (this obviously depends on how far my feet are from my hips), and if I try to push my knees together it's very challenging and I feel tension at my hip flexor areas and they start to tremble a bit. But my friend could do this easily.

Similarly if I'm sitting on a chair and try to lift one foot up onto the front of the chair, like this, I can't do it without hunching forward and/or my other leg coming off the floor. (I think a lot of people have this same issue but I think I'm particularly bad).

And with all similar movements like this, it seems like my knees always wants to go outward and externally rotate my hip rather than stay straight and close to the centre-line of my body.

This is the hip flexors right? What are some good exercises for this area and could this be the cause of my APT?

    Struggling to progress scorpion

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:26 AM PDT

I'm working towards improving my flexibility in scorpion to eventually do a needle/spike. I am really struggling with getting my opposite hand on my foot (for example, when I am holiding my right leg up with my right hand, I can't reach it with my left hand at the same time). It feels very one-sided at the moment and doesn't feel very centered! I want to be able to grab my ankles but I can only get my opposite hand to my wrist, and not to my foot.

Can anyone advise where I might be going wrong?
