What are the best pants options for men practiging yoga?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:28 AM PDT

    Hello there,

I'm finding it really hard to find a good one to practice yoga. They keep pulling me back on my exercises. Sometimes they don't stretch enough, sometimes they get on the way and things like that...

I'm a beginner in Yoga... practicing now for about 3 months and I'm really liking it which is why I want to invest now in better pants as well.

Questions about Scoliosis, Alignment, and Spine Adjustment

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:17 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I've been practicing yoga for nearly three years at this point. I have moderate scoliosis - my spine is s-shaped with two roughly equal severity curves, each in opposite directions, so overall my shoulders and hips are mostly level. When I first started practicing yoga, I was focused on flexibility and ended up hurting my knee a bit, so I started focusing on strength and alignment instead. I practiced with a lot of focus on hips, back, and core strengthening and I tried to lengthen and engage my muscles so that my spine is as aligned as I can make it.

Over the past year I've noticed a dramatic difference in my body. It may sound strange, but there was a 6 month period where every two months or so where during practice I would experience a deep, resonant pop in my spine, feel intense euphoria, and then stand up to realize I was slightly taller. These pops started at the base of my spine, to my mid back and then to my upper back between my shoulder blades. I've had three pops in total and I'm roughly 1.5 inches (3.8cm) taller. This has been confirmed by doctor's visits and friends commenting on my height. And no, it couldn't be due to a growth spurt- I've been done growing for a long time.

With the changes in my spine some other parts of my body that I think I was either relying too heavily on or not engaging well enough have started to have problems. My left knee and hip in particular. But the biggest change is that now, at the end of a really opening practice (i.e. backbends, twists), when I lay down in savasana to close my practice, I get very deep pops in my pelvis and low back area as I roll down my spine. I can feel it on the mat too, after a pop some area of my back or hip will drop down onto to the floor. And I feel a resonating sensation, not quite an ache but a sensation nonetheless. Sometimes also after sitting for a long time, if I stand up and engage my muscles to lengthen my spine (not stretching, just standing with good posture) my tailbone will pop and I'll see some starts.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experience with scoliosis and yoga practice and can offer some guidance on what might be happening in there? How to protect my spine and deal with things shifting?

    Yoga camp day 2 YWA

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 04:02 PM PDT

I definitely needed yoga today. My emotions were all over the place and yoga helped me calm down. I did day 2 of yoga camp. It was intense and I had to do 20 minutes before dinner and finished the rest after dinner. I'm working on getting better on balance. And those poses were challenging. I did fall out of the pose but kept trying.

    Crow pose

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:28 PM PDT

So Adriene (yoga with Adriene) throws in crow pose in some of her videos. I'm a tiny person and I can't seem to get my legs to where they need to be. Is there a trick to getting my legs near my armpits?

Does anyone use the app Downdog for their practice?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:44 PM PDT

Since the pandemic started, I have been following my yoga practice with the app downdog ( I did some classes here and there but never something consistent, only until May I got serious with yoga and following the website) After 6 months, I feel I am getting better at it but the website system isn't good at explaining the poses or following your progress. So I am starting to get a little scared that I will be hurting myself for doing something wrong. Does someone else use downdog? Any suggestions of how I can complement my routine?

Yoga instruction videos where the instructor doesn't talk so much

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:33 PM PDT

Anyone got a good set of youtube video where maybe the instructor doesn't talk rapid fire.

I tried yoga with adrienne, and fight master yoga. But both of them talk alot and give so many queues that it feels overwhelming to em and I can not relax into the poses.

I already know most of the poses I just want a guided practice

Any advice for when it hurts a lot rather than the usual stretchy good-pain?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:13 AM PDT

I've been doing yoga for about a year and I've gotten pretty far (at least to me). It always feels good and my stretches have advanced considerably. Lately, however, when I get into a pose, it's less of that stretching "good pain" and more just horrible discomfort mounting until I can't take it anymore.

Does this happen to other people? Any helpful tips? I'm hydrated, took a couple days off and tried easing into it, but I still have the problem.

What do you guys think of the Down Dog app? Or others?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 04:16 PM PDT

I've been subbed to Yoga with Adriene for a few months and while I love her, I want longer and more intense sessions. Someone suggested Yoga International to me, and I am on the 30 day trial right now. I have only done one of their meditations last night but it was fantastic. Unfortunately, the app is terrible. Also, the service is 20/month.

Saw some suggestions for Down Dog and I just completed my profile on the app. I love the customization options. The app seems totally solid. But I wonder if there's anything that matches it that also has guided meditations? I usually pay for a guided meditation app and I don't want to pay for more than one thing, so it would be ideal to get guided yoga/meditation from the same service.

    Y'all have any suggestions?

Yin yoga seems too easy and somewhat pointless?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:59 AM PDT

Background: I'm reasonably active, but only have basic experience with yoga.

I've done a couple of yin yoga classes at my gym. It seems we hold very easy poses for the hour - easy enough that it hardly feels like it's doing anything for flexibility. It's definitely relaxing - I almost fell asleep - but it seems pointless from a work out or even stretching / flexibility perspective. It's more a study of mindfulness than anything else.

I've read that yin yoga is actually meant to be somewhat difficult. Does that mean my gym is offering an overly simplified version of it?
