    Yoga teachers-tips to leading mediations?!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:22 PM PST

    Hi There!

    Meditations***

I've been teaching yoga part-time for about a year after completing my 200 hr YTT in January. Obviously with Covid my experience has been a bit different than what I expected.

What I'm coming to realize is that designing a class and instructing poses isn't all that hard. What IS difficult is creating that meditative environment that helps students turn inward and really get the the core of what yoga is about.

Does anyone have any tips on how they got better incorporating more of the meditative/spiritual aspects of yoga into your their classes? And also just ways to gain confidence in leading those mediations?

    Thanks all!

I can't stretch in pigeon without hurting my knee

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:27 PM PST

As the title says, I can't find any way to do pigeon pose in which my knee doesn't hurt but I still feel a stretch.

I've tried the usual modifications like reclined pigeon, having my hips on a block, and bringing my foot closer to my pelvis. These relieve the knee pain, but the problem is that if I do them at a level where my knee isn't hurting, I also don't feel any kind of stretch happening. I can either do the pose such that I feel a stretch AND my knee hurts, or such that my knee doesn't hurt but I also don't feel a stretch.

I think I must be doing something wrong, but as I am not currently in a position to have an in-person instructor, I'm hoping someone here on r/yoga might have some idea of what might be going wrong or if there's some other pose I can do to replace pigeon.

For what it's worth, I don't have knee pain in general or in most poses. The knee hurts on very rare occasions if I go hiking or walk a very long way, but in general, there's nothing seriously wrong with it. A doctor once told me it was very slightly misaligned.

I'm just hoping there's some way I can get the physical benefits of pigeon pose without doing it in a way that hurts.

    Sun Salutation

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:49 AM PST

Basically I'm looking for something I can do every day and not have to worry about the endless number of combinations. Not saying I'll never change. Just want to keep it simple so I practice.

Is sun salutation a well rounded form to do daily? If anyone has any opinions on it please let me know. I've been doing this one in the mornings for the last week. I like it so far.

I do want to get 1. More flexible 2. Energetic&spiritual health out of yoga practice.

    Best exercises for MA

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:43 AM PST

Hello there! I'm nowhere near to be considered a yoga practitioner, I'm agnostic and I don't like yoga as a fitness thing to do BUT I realized I need to stretch more and it might be helpful to introduce some yoga in my routine functional to martial arts. Since I practise judo, I started to follow a yt channel that shows bjj applied yoga exercises. I also do some light solo sparring and realized being nore flexible would help a lot, especially with high kicks. It'd be much appreciated if you dropped in the comments the best exercises or routines for martial arts mobility (was trying to learn front and middle split but with very few improvements).

    Splits?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:31 AM PST

I'm sure this will have been covered before (I can't find it!) but I was wondering if anyone had tips for mastering the splits? I've set myself the challenge to try and get there before the end of the year. I'm fairly used to yoga, I use Kassandra mostly but wondered if there was any specific tutorials/tips people had to share? Thanks :)

    Chaturanga to upward facing dog

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:46 AM PST

Any tips on how to smoothly transition from chaturanga to upward facing dog. I practice daily vinyasa flow and can't seem to get the hang of it. Is it just practice and build arm & core strength or am I doing it wrong? I just collapse to the floor instead of moving to the upward dog while elevated.

    Straight Legs In Headstand Help

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:23 AM PST

I find I can hold tucked headstand just fine and I can press up into a staggered handstand (legs make an L shape) without jumping.

My problem is that I can't get both legs straight at the moment. From a tucked position, if I squeeze my legs together, I can get my legs above my head but attempting to fully straighten means rolling out of the pose.

I'm not sure how you keep a hollow hold while transitioning to straight legs. My hips naturally tip back as I move from tucked to straight leg.

What tips do you have for straightening the legs without losing balance?

Cannot flatten my lower back during stuff like forward bend.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:37 AM PST

I can touch my toes no problem, but my lower back has a hard arch (rounding) when i do so, if i focus on keeping it flat and try to touch my toes I can only get about half way down, is this normal? Is there a good way to fix it other than just doing those half forward bends every day?

    Cheers

Looking forward to find out the correct way to do Shirshasana. I am not sure what part of the head touches the ground. Is it the forehead or the temple, or something else?
