How do you maintain your practice? Posted: 14 Nov 2020 12:50 PM PST I've been trying to get into a regular practice for YEARS, but I always end up stopping. I love how it makes me feel when I practice regularly, but I just can't seem to make it a habit or something I "have" to do, an attitude I see in so many yogis. My question is for all of you regular practitioners... how do you do it? How do you maintain a regular practice? How do you define a "regular" practice? Please include the type of yoga you practice in your response [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Nov 2020 07:43 PM PST So, it's a been a year since I got into pranayama thanks to this anime that featured abilities based on beathing techniques. Since I had heard about breathing my interest instantly raised and the research about it lead me to Pranayama, and then to Yoga. The thing is... I am alone, right now, in a cabin in dñthe desert and I wanted to make a bonfire. I am no scout but I wasn't completely lost, and I used some logic as to how to arrange the... wood. But setting it on fire was the problem. I only got a lighter, and some candles, and the wood was a tad little humid. So... it took me 20 minutes to set little wood (ha, not english speaker, sorry) slightly on fire, and 10 minutes to put the rest on fire. I decided to blow air on it for 10 mins lol and eventually, like 9 mins in, I thought about Pranayama... specially, the Brearh Of Fire. Of course media encouraged me to try it even further, and... I'm really cozy and warm right now. The breathing pattern (with some personalization) works perfectly. And it also made me focus on the fire spreading nice and even. I wanted to share that with all of you 🙏❤ i hope it onspores our beautiful practice. This ancient tradition's teachings have me blissed out (?) Blessings to you all. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Nov 2020 07:40 PM PST Not sure what subreddit to post this in, but felt like someone here could offer me their insight. I've never practiced yoga, martial arts or any rigorous training system, but as long as I can remember, I've been able engage or turn something on deep beneath my core. The best way to describe it is a ball of energy or heat. My core can be as pliable as the Pillsbury dough boy's and still, I can ignite this ball of heat. When I do, I start to feel it battling for control over the muscles in my body. My traps will start to twitch, hands attempting to flail, glutes and groin muscles contract and squeeze tightly. It takes mental focus to control the intensity of these involuntary muscle contractions. It's like breathing. Breathing happens automatically but you can control it yourself as well. If I do it for a minute or so, the palms of my hands will begin to sweat, my feet on occasion as well. Okay, now that I'm done describing it generally, I've noticed that I can use it practically in some situations. For example, when I'm driving and feeling "heavy eyelid" syndrome, I do the ball of heat contraction (sorry, I don't have any better words for this) and feel my eyes become lighter, mind become more alert, and overall more awake. It saved me from a few car accidents on occasion. Yesterday, I decided to do some deep 30 minutes worth of breath work. After wards I got on my knees and hands like I was crawling, and focused on the doing the ball of heat contractions. As I was doing them, I did a kneeling sit on my calves and felt this heat spread through my quads and groin, kind of like putting drops of food coloring into a beaker of clear water. And then, I felt it. Fast forward two minutes later - without touching it or thinking about pretty girls or sexually arousing things, I had a massive election 🤣 Talk about a super power, right?! It was literally a full body orgasm. I waited a few hours before attempting it again, and sure enough, same result. Now, I was simultaneously impressed and disappointed because I was doing good for 3 months, and my relapse happened to simultaneously fall on Friday the 13th, and No Nut November. Which brings me to my point - what the heck is this? I've gone through 20 something years of being able to do this "ball of heat in core" thing without knowing what it is, hearing anybody in person ever talk about it, not knowing if it's a curse or a blessing, how to describe it, if I'm doing it right or wrong, what its purpose is, if this is something I can train, what I can potentially do it with it, etc. In regards to what I can do with it, the list just seams to grow and grow: remedy "heavy eye lids", have orgasms using only the power of the mind. What I mentioned aren't even the weirdest ones. I remember one time, a while back, like 5 years ago, I decided to lie down and do the ball of heat thingy for 15 minutes straight. I even set a timer. After I finished, I was completely drenched in sweat, absolutely mentally and physically exhausted, but what I felt could only be described as "unity". For example, I've asked a few people where they felt their center, or where "they" themselves were located in the body, which they responded by saying somewhere in the head. Same with me too. However, after those 15 minutes, my center shifted from my head to my guts, or my core, for like a solid minute straight. Weirdest other-worldly sensation I've ever had by far. I don't know why I've picked the yoga subreddit.. I guess I've heard some similar things from it, like crazy avatar yogis doing crazy stuff with their body. Has anybody here had similar experiences or know what I'm talking about? Am I just an anomaly? [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Nov 2020 07:32 PM PST Hey guys. I started doing yoga every day or every other day about a month ago. I just go through my own stretches. I started out great and saw great flexibility progress, now in the past couple weeks it feels like my thighs are extra stiff (as stiff as before starting) and quite painful. Not sure if I should continue stretching everyday or take a few days off? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks a bunch. Namaste 🙏🏼 [link] [comments]
Recommended Mics for Zoom Yoga classes Posted: 14 Nov 2020 07:56 AM PST Hi everyone! Hope you are all staying safe and healthy during these trying times. Question for anyone who teaches yoga classes on zoom: what kind of microphone equipment do you use? Currently I'm using my AirPods, but according to my students sometimes the volume goes in and out during the class. Usually if I just use external mics from my laptop or my phone it's fine, but I don't particularly enjoy speaking too loudly in savasana or resting poses just so my students can hear me on the external mics. All advice appreciated! Thanks 🙏🏼 [link] [comments]
My Training isn’t what I thought... and not in a good way . Posted: 14 Nov 2020 06:32 PM PST I feel as though today during a conversation with both of my instructors I am feeling very overwhelmed and a dejected. They said they don't feel as though I want to be a teacher, when I spent 1900 dollars to be put in this training. Either way I explained that I do want to teach, I have one last semester here and I'm trying not to feed into any animosity and to not allow this to affect my practice. I'm kind of annoyed because this wasn't my first option to take my training at possibly because I felt this situation would happen. I've been planning this for atleast a year now. ps one of my yoga teachers and I have history of this [link] [comments]
Recommendation for an online RYT200? Posted: 14 Nov 2020 01:32 PM PST Does anyone have an online yoga teacher training they'd recommend? I'm looking for vinyasa/hatha. The course I was planning to do in-person next year is cancelled, and I feel like I don't want to wait any longer to commit to a training. Also, feedback from those of you that have taken a YTT online would be welcome, as I'm sure there are some notable differences to an in-person course. [link] [comments]
What is the name of this breathing technique? Posted: 14 Nov 2020 09:32 AM PST I've been doing yoga and meditation and while I mostly inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth . I thought about trying the opposing , breathing in from the mouth and exhaling from the nose. Instantly I felt more air into my lungs and also felt my face tightening with discomfort till I could actually move my face in ways I've never before . It has made me able to stretch further although it can cause snoring and sometimes it's even impossible in certain poses ? [link] [comments]
Who are your favourite yogis on Instagram? Posted: 14 Nov 2020 09:31 AM PST I'm a big fan of @mynameisjessamyn @giannayoga @kate_bhakti .... But would love to add more great accounts (bonus points for BIPOC, punk or queer yogi accounts) [link] [comments]
What are the worst qualities you can find in an instructor? Posted: 14 Nov 2020 09:19 AM PST I am new to yoga and I enjoy the practice but ive had some bad experiences (Things like Being late. Room not being hot (as advertised). Bad music. Micromanaging poses/movements.). I am wondering if I should stick with this studio or find a new one and if my frustrations are warranted. What do y'all think? [link] [comments]
Does anyone know why my whole body crunches during yoga? Posted: 14 Nov 2020 04:32 AM PST Iv just recently started doing yoga and most stretches cause me to crunch? I'm wondering why this is is it good? Release of tension? Or is it bad am I causing harm? Sorry if its a silly question [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Nov 2020 12:22 AM PST Dear folks of r/yoga ! I've began practicing yoga daily for about a month now and as i'm moving deeper into my practice, I noticed this super weird, minimally painful, but rather uncomfortable, sort of popping sensation in both shins, at around this area, especially when I do this stretch, even without the strap, just holding onto my thigh. My body is really, really stiff. Should I be concerned about hurting my body, or just go ahead and ease into the uncomfortable feeling, as it's something natural? I'm hoping it's just my muscles/tendons adjusting to a completely new motion, but my mind likes to think about more extreme stuff. Thanks in advance, have a lovely weekend! ^^ Edit: upon trying to discover the sensation a bit more, it feels like my muscles are tearing. [link] [comments]
Practice that’s easy on shoulders Posted: 14 Nov 2020 06:02 AM PST I'm currently doing physio on my shoulder for some inflammation on the tendons there. I'm really keen to make the exercises work so don't want to do anything to trigger pain and have been really missing my usual yoga practice which includes a lot of vinyasa, ddogs etc. Does anyone have any recs for type of practice that might be easier on the shoulders (ideally avoiding vinyasas, arm balances, side planks etc)? I have an Alo moves subscription and find it really difficult to choose something that won't leave me sitting in child's pose as a replacement for most of the class [link] [comments]
