Ashtanga yoga: Is my teacher crossing a line telling me how to manage my social media?

Is my teacher crossing a line telling me how to manage my social media?

So a few days ago my teacher noticed I made a mistake with flipping the left and right side of a pose in intermediate. They asked if I was okay and I just said I was a little distracted mostly from university classes. Everything else was fine.

I have a new yoga Instagram I post regularly in. So I posted a fun vid the other day of just my practice and the sunset since I had practiced in the evening that day.

Then my teacher responded to/shared that post in my DM and said that they want to do an "experiment" for me to be more absorbed in my practice:

    • Try not to practice outside (which I have done so many times which wasn't an issue) and

    • Putting a camera recording my practice will also destroy my focus.

    • I'd like to add that the camera is a tiny osmo camera. It's not hard to set up and once it's there, I completely forget about it -

So then my teacher told me that my "experiment" should be not recording myself for a week. They also said that even though Instagram makes it seem like yoga happens in beautiful places with smiling women in pretty outfits - that really pulls us out of our practice.

... I never thought that about yoga. And if I want to practice in pretty clothes - I don't know how that's a problem. I'm not the only Ashtangi who does so?

Here's the thing, I'm 23 years old. I don't think my yoga teacher would ever say these things to the older practitioners. I think I'm kind of seen as a young unwise person who constantly needs guidance. And I get it to some extent.

I understand they are coming from a good place with good intentions but I feel like they are crossing a line weirdly hovering on whether I record my practice or not as well as when I post it. And now if I want to practice outside when it's nice out.

I'm not flustered about not posting for a week by the way. But more so that my own yoga teacher is telling me to in a strange way that makes me feel shame if I were to go against their word.

It's the first time that I've briefly considered that maybe it's time for a new teacher because there are a few other things that I don't agree with in their methodology (i.e. my constant left knee pain will go away in the long term so I should keep doing lotus pose. And if I don't consistently do lotus pose, I can't move forward in intermediate).

But I could be overthinking this or maybe blowing this out of proportion. Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any advice?

    Thanks!

Pay what you want online classes?

I remember at the beginning of Covid there were a few teachers offering pay what you want Ashtanga classes online. Is anyone still doing this? Even another style of yoga would be great. If you know of any please share the names and links. Thanks!
