Just a reminder that if you feel as though, for lack of a better word, you are "plateuing" --- whether your practice is purely physical, deeply spiritual or somewhere in between --- if you keep coming back to the mat, the magic will return. Even if you can only bring yourself into a few poses, a few breaths.

For me, I found I needed to deepen my practice with more devotion to the divine. For others, that do not practice traditional yoga, it may be entirely different, maybe deepen your poses, move past the limits we sometimes impose on ourselves.

Wherever you are in your journey, if you just don't feel right in it anymore, it often means it is time to grow.

This is purely my own perspective, though.

    Namaste.

    I just started doing yoga...

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 06:16 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I'm really new to this practice, I've always done some exercise like running, biking, swimming, pilates and gym stuff but never practiced Yoga. Two weeks ago I started to have really bad lower back pain + left hip pain, especially in the mornings I would wake up with a lot of pain and stiffness so I decided to start doing yoga. (I have scoliosis and sit in my computer a lot)

In less than a week my lower back pain has been feeling so much better, my body ache after 5 days of regularly stretching which I assume is normal since I have never practiced Yoga? But besides that my mood and my energy have felt so much better, I can also hear my body cracking sometimes when I do just simple every day movements.

I would love to start doing some more intricate poses like handstands, but I don't really have much strength.

    Any tips / recommendations?

    Thank you for reading me.

Conspiracy theorists and their grip over Yoga instructors

BBC News - Does yoga have a conspiracy theory problem? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-55957298

I think an important article for some to read here. There are some worrying anti science and wacky conspiracies in the Yoga community in the UK where I'm based. I think the mods should do more to combat it. Particularly when it's dangerous views like anti vaxxers and Qanon etc Thoughts?

    Camel Position trouble

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 07:50 PM PST

So I started about a month ago. Using Down Dog app. I wish I could do classes, but not until this COVID stuff chills down.

So when I go into Camel Position I start shaking... kind of uncontrollably. It starts in my lower back but comes up to my shoulders. They are small shakes, but it's concerning because I have not had this in any other position, which just makes me think I might be doing something wrong.

Is this common? I could not find anything on the Reddit with a bunch of searches, so apologies if this has been asked.

    Lower back muscle imbalance

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 07:14 PM PST

    Hi Folks!

I'm having trouble with tense muscle pain due to a muscle imbalance in my lower back. My massage therapist just told me that it's because the left side of my lower back has significantly more muscle than my right side. Are there specific asanas that would help correct the imbalance?

Where does yoga fit into your wellness routine?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 08:31 PM PST

I've been doing yoga off and on for years. It helps with my anxiety and I think it's my favourite way to move my body, I just haven't been so disciplined in the past unless it's for some sort of external pressure (school, work, etc.). I've recently been trying to develop a regular practice, but I wanted to know how yoga fits into you guys' fitness routines.

I like indoor climbing/bouldering (I'm in Australia, COVID isn't a big deal here anymore, let's hope it stays that way!) and I am attempting to learn slacklining. I work at a gym so I can pretty much do whatever I want in terms of fitness, but I'm just curious as to what you all do.

Is yoga your main way of moving, or do you do it more for mental health, and something else to get fit?

Are yin and gentle yoga enough? And other questions I have as a chronically ill person

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 02:04 PM PST

Hi! I've been working on my yoga practice for the past two months, and it's becoming a very important part of my daily life.

For background: I have fibromyalgia and a mix of other chronic illnesses and use a cane to walk. A few years ago I was able to do vinyasana/power yoga, but since then I've gotten sicker and can't do that type of yoga anymore.

Lately I've been using the Down Dog app as well as some YouTube videos. However, after doing some beginner yoga with Adrienne and some hatha with the app, I feel sick for the whole day, like literally as if I had the flu. I have really enjoyed yin, gentle, and restorative yoga though.

So here are my questions, and please keep in mind that I prefer to follow the types of yoga available in the app: *Is it OK to focus on yin, gentle, and restorative yoga and skip the other types? I want to have a balances practice but don't want to feel sick.

*Should I focus on the types mentioned above and try to incorporate mini sessions of other types?

*How do I know when my body is ready to try other levels or other types of yoga? Right now I still really need to increase my strength and balance, so I have a long way to go before I can move past beginner yoga.

Thank you so much for your insights! I appreciate other tips not mentioned in my post too.

    Book recommendations

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 06:58 PM PST

Does anyone have book recommendations for where we store and hold certain emotions and trauma in the body, or what ailments correlate to emotionally? I know yoga practice explores this but I'd love to dive a little deeper into it.

    Nutrition help...

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 04:48 PM PST

Maybe not exactly the right place but I feel like everyone here probably eats pretty healthy. I struggle to eat healthy because I get bored of foods quickly (meaning after a week of the same stuff it starts to make me nauseous) but trying to put together new healthy meals is really challenging.

I do much better on high fat/low carb diets like keto, but carbs for breakfast seem to give me a good boost of energy (I currently eat oats overnight brand oats for breakfast). But by lunch time I'm starving and I have no idea what to do. My husband only eats once or twice a day (breakfast and dinner) and is pretty healthy, but if he wants a snack it's frozen taquitos or pot stickers. And those are tasty but I'm sitting here with and upset digestive system (not stomach) waiting to see if I'll have to use the bathroom again because every time I eat taquitos it happens. It hurts and I feel icky and honestly I'm fed up with it.

But I don't know how to cook. I don't know what's healthy or where to start beyond fad diets that aren't sustainable.

I just want to do yoga and be healthy but if I'm eating junk what's the point of the yoga?

I'm sorry for the rant. I'm just frustrated and really need some help...

I've read and heard that happen to many people, particularly in hip opening poses. However i never had this experience and feel like maybe I'm doing something wrong, or have some blockage. Any tips would be appreciated.

    Mats

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 04:27 PM PST

I have a Gaiam yoga mat currently I got from Winners like a year ago and my knees and wrists kill me with it. I'm pretty sure it's a 4mm but man it feels THIN. I am looking at a B yoga mat on Amazon but I am stuck between 4-6mm. I want stability but I don't want my knees and wrists to ache. Does anyone have the B yoga mat ? What do you think would be good for hardwood floors for joints but stability for practice. Thanks !!!

    'Slow' Yoga recommendations

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 02:56 PM PST

Hello all, I'm looking to do some yoga everyday for maybe 20-30 minutes. I've seen the list of online yoga resources and I've tried Yoga with Adriene. While her videos are very good, I prefer yoga where the poses are held for longer (30 secs-1 min). I suppose i prefer more static classes to the fast paced classes, especially as I'm getting back into it.

Are there any channels on the list that sound like that? Just to clarify, I'm not looking for very easy yoga, but classes where the poses/stretches are long and I can get my breathing right. Thank you!

Getting past the pain in pigeon pose

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 02:05 PM PST

Sorry I don't know the proper names. I have been doing yoga on and off for three years. How do you get your hips to open up? How long has it taken you to get fully comfortable in pigeon and fire log pose? I just want to know if it's even attainable because my hips feel like rocks. It's a good pain when I practice but I'd like to know if that type of flexibility is possible for all.

Can I restore Manduka Eko Superlite travel mat?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 08:13 AM PST

I use this mat for travelling only and I took it out of closet recently and noticed there are patches of worn down parts (dried out). Is there any way to restore the worn down parts? These parts are not as grippy.
