    Recovering gym rat

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 11:18 AM PST

    Hello,

Pre-Covid, I was a gym rat. It helped me a ton while going through divorce and other life transitions. I gained a lot of muscle and a butt. I've always been very self-conscious of my backside, and it was exciting to see that I'd finally gained one for the first time in my life. Yoga has always been in the background, something that made me feel really good in a holistic way, but I never took it all that seriously until the pandemic struck.

I love the way yoga makes me feel. It is truly a therapeutic and deeply satisfying way to move my body in a way that seems nurturing and kind, not a way to change a body part or to change how I view my body. I want to delve deeper into yoga and more intense practices, but I also feel a pull to go back to the gym (at some point) to lift weights, and I'm afraid to go back into the body comp-focused agenda that I had before-- which I thought had helped me but I now realize had also added to my stress in a way. It also feels like a never-ending treadmill (more weights, bigger butt, more muscles, etc etc).

How do you let go of trying to change your body? How do you accept your body now as it is? Any former gym rats out there who went through the same thing?

    I love yoga, but...

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 07:58 AM PST

...but I feel that if I don't do yoga for even two days in between, I have little motivation and energy to resume. I'm 18F, have been doing yoga everyday for a month and a half now (and irregularly for many months before that).

I like how positive yoga makes me feel and how lovely my mind, body and soul feel after a practice. And I absolutely love that yoga is such a flexible exercise in terms of intensity and effectiveness.

But if I miss even a day or two in between (which, I know, is not a lot of time to lose touch), it takes me a lot of time to get back to yoga properly. More than motivation, I feel I'm lacking in energy. It could be because of my crazy schedule nowadays, though.

I'd love to know if other people experience this too, and how can I make getting back to yoga easier...

Crying is one of the highest devotional songs. One who knows crying, knows spiritual practice. If you can cry with a pure heart, nothing else compares to such a prayer. Crying includes all the principles of Yoga. - Kripalvanandji

    TJ Maxx Manduka strikes again!

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 06:46 PM PST

I can't believe it - my boyfriend and I walked into TJ Maxx today and found TWO Manduka Pro Mats for $50/$60! The $60 one is the extra long version - perfect for my boyfriend, and I've been eyeing the sage color for a long time. Minor discoloration and a bent edge on mine. It was a dream come true!

I feel like yoga has intrinsically changed how my hands work / feel

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 01:11 PM PST

Does this make any sense? 😂

I've been doing yoga for a few years, but I only recently got back into regular practice, and I think it pairs very nicely with my cardio sessions to improve my mind-body connection and overall health, inside and out.

Anyway, recently, I've noticed that when I touch a part of my body or the mat, or when I clasp my hands together, it just feels... different. Like my hands REALLY clasp, or I REALLY feel what I'm feeling, where before there was an invisible layer between my hand and that which I touched. Is this an actual thing or is my mind making stuff up? lol

While I'm here, I'm curious as to what everyone's strange discoveries have been from regular practice. :)

    Stopped class mid-way

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 04:48 PM PST

Hi everyone! I think I'm just looking for some reassurance.

I have a pretty consistent practice, 6 days a week. I've really been going through it the last couple weeks, and today, just about 40 minutes into my 60 minute class, I just lost it. Like I had a lot of anxiety and couldn't focus, and I was crying, and just had to pause class, sit down, and talk myself through it. I got back on the mat, and made it about 10 more minutes before I got really frustrated with the pace of the class, which I was hating up to that point to be honest, and turned it off to look for a new, really short one to round out my hour. I found one, but I only made it about 2 minutes into that one before I got so frustrated again and just stopped for the day.

I guess I just feel like I let myself down? I have never in my life stopped any sort of class mid way before, yoga or otherwise. Like, I think it was right for me in the moment, and was honoring my practice to stop because it wasn't a productive and enjoyable thing in that moment, and I was feeling really overwhelmed. Which, happens sometimes, like you don't love every second of every class, and I always push through it, but I just needed to stop. Has anyone else ever done this? Idk I just feel like I did something wrong? I feel like part of yoga is learning to take those strong emotions in stride, and be mindful and steady yourself, but I just was having such a hard time.

I'm not sure if I wrote this to get it off my chest, or just ask for advice, or what, but if anyone has any words of wisdom I would love to hear them :)

Yoga videos for good form and good practice

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 06:14 PM PST

I see a lot of people talking about good form and breathing. I feel like I have a decent grasp for at least the form, having done some basic pilates videos for a long time where the instructor talked through form. But I didn't even know that you should keep a microbend in your elbows during down dog until I came across this sub. As for breathing, I'll admit I ignore those instructions a lot of the time lol.

I feel like the best way to ensure you're doing things right is to go to an in-person class with an experienced instructor, but are there online instructors or videos you'd recommend? I pretty much only practice yoga at home.

    Slippery mcbutterfingers

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 01:36 PM PST

Title pretty much sums it up. Its so frustrating trying to get into down dog, one legged dog and knee to nose when your hands are constantly slipping up the mat. How do I stop this from happening. Recently got myself a manduka Pro and while my feet don't slip at all my hands are!

    Tips appreciated 🙏

    Yoga and knee pain

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 01:14 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have been practicing for years, mostly vinyasa and yin. I had a very regular practice, 3-4 times per week about 60-90 minutes per class, a few years ago. For various reasons I dropped off. The week before New Years I stared a yoga every day goal and have kept to that pretty well (missed 3 days this year). My practices have been between 20-30 minutes daily especially at the start and I've been moving gradually up to adding a few 45 minutes sessions the last two weeks (some vin some yin). This week I've noticed that my knees have been hurting. I am always aware of them and back out when I feel pain. I have some YTT and make sure to engage my knee caps when needed and lift the arches if my feet, etc. but I am clearly missing something. My heart says it's possibly hip opener related? I would love any suggestions you may have, even if it seems pretty basic. I want to make sure I'm protecting my body so that I can continue to use it and practice yoga for years to come!!

    In Studio practice?.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 07:29 PM PST

    Hi,

I've been doing yoga off and on for years. During the early phase of the pandemic, I regularly did YouTube videos from home. However, I've fallen off the routine. I always do better and am more consistent with in person classes. I would LOVE to get back into an in person studio, but I'm torn.

There are a few studios open locally for limited attendance classes. What are thoughts on in person practice? Is there a way to safely practice in a studio right now? Some studios require masks at all times while off the mat, others recommend them at all times while in the studio. I am in NO WAY an antimasker, but I really don't know that I would be able to control my breathing during a strenuous practice with a mask on.

    Thoughts?

I really want to do yoga but I get bored.

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 07:05 PM PST

The only exercise I do is fast walking on the treadmill 30 minutes a day, and my motivation is I'm able to go on my phone or watch TV so I'm not focused on exercising.

I've been wanting to do yoga for years for the benefit and its feels do good after.... but I have to use my brain to follow the poses and there's no distraction the entire time and I HATE it........

    Help?

I was thinking 20 minutes a day of vynasa.... any suggestions....

Online trainings for meditation teachers ?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 12:34 PM PST

Sort of yoga related - I am a yoga instructor and I teach a lot of yin and restorative classes with meditation and I would like to get some more in depth training for my students. I am a Buddhist of 20+ years so I have a pretty solid meditation practice but I find myself at a loss for explaining or speaking others through it. I'd prefer a YA-certified course since I am trying to get my RYT 500 so the extra c.e. credits would help.

    Thanks !

What other ways do you stay fit during lockdown?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 12:20 PM PST

Not sure where to post this. Sorry if it's not very relevant.

I used to swim and kayak with my university but I cant do either because of lockdown. I have a permanent issue with my metatarsal which has me in a removable cast thing most of the time so running would cause pain but being on my feet is ok as long as I'm not jumping around too much.

I want to build back some of the muscle I had before lockdown. I think it'd make my mental health a lot better too, it's just yoga doesn't seem to be enough to keep me motivated to be doing things. In the pool I can constantly strive for a faster time to motivate myself, but with yoga I find it difficult to keep a routine going. I tend to be really motivated for a few days then quickly lose interest and go back to doing nothing. I think another hobby would help but I'm not sure what else I can even do.

I know yoga can be enough to build muscle and focus on fitness, but I'm not really sure where to start. What other exercise do you guys do on top of yoga and how good is it at keeping you fit in comparison with the yoga? Tips for motivation and keeping fit with yoga would be nice too if anyone has any :)

    Chatarunga question

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:42 AM PST

Even though I've been doing yoga off and on for years (almost exclusively videos at home), chatarunga remains difficult for me because my chest is one of my weakest areas. I don't have the strength to control myself all the way to my belly without eventually just letting it fall. I've watched some videos on how to improve this but am seeing conflicting information: does your belly have to go all the way down or is it still correct form to go as deep as you can before the transition to cobra or upward facing dog? I'm not experiencing any pain doing it the way I do but definitely don't want to eventually injure myself.

    Lolasana

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 06:50 AM PST

Hi all! This is my first time posting here. I have been practicing yoga for about 12-13 years. In the last year I have been focusing more on my upper body strength because it was definitely my weak point. I am doing well with Crow and have started working on side crow and a few others. However, I am having a lot of trouble with lolasana. I feel like my arms aren't long enough or something. Is this just a strength issue or can you really have arms that aren't long enough to do the pose correctly? Any tips on improving are very much appreciated!!

    Yoga Detox or flu-like symptoms?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 06:08 AM PST

Hi all! I'm new on Reddit! :D

I've been doing yoga for at least 3 weeks a minimum 5 times a week. I had done yoga before on and off, been to classes of ashtanga vinyasa, etc.

I consider myself healthy - I run 5 K twice a week, I'm a pescatarian (vegetarian for 3 years), I take my vitamins, work with my emotions, etc.

Lately in the last week I have started feeling like sh*t: weakness, really sad, crying in savasana, mild nausea (not after yoga, but sometimes the whole day), constipation after going "too much" for a day or two 👀, strange headaches that make me sensitive to noise and sometimes light, irritability...

Literally I was fine until a week ago, feeling better than ever with yoga. Note I do yoga to de-stress and work through emotions, so I don't do it for strenuous exercise (I do other things like running for that).

    Has anyone experienced something similar????

    Thx!!
