I started doing Yoga last year and love how it has given me so much strength, both physically and mentally. I did this painting to visualise my yoga experience. Hope you like it!

    Finding myself in yoga, again.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 07:10 PM PST

I've been in a not great place mentally lately, and I've quit all my teaching jobs over the last year. Yoga stopped holding its meaning for me at some point, when I lost touch with myself. I was tired of teaching in country clubs & gyms, and I really lost passion.

I've decided to go for what I've always wanted to do: help other people. I've been mulling over the idea for a few years of teaching yoga in the prison system, and I'm finally going to go for it. I've decided to take the special courses and apply.

Yoga has always been about helping myself and others, and I'm happy I'm finding that again in a way that I feel passionate about.

Do you regularly usa a yoga inversion stool? Are they worth it? Which brand do you like?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:34 PM PST

I am considering buying a yoga stool for inversions. A farm accident from my youth leaves me with an old fracture in my C-6, ski accidents have added extra neck fragility. Also, the combination of a long skinny neck and proportionately short humerus bones mean I usually have to prop up considerably at the studio if i want to do inversions safely. I'm willing to spend the money but want to hear both the positive and negative things you have to say about them. Thank you! Namaste.

    thoughts on bikram sequence?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:02 PM PST

i have recently started practicing at my local yoga studio, social distancing and everything and i live in a small town so i'm very grateful that there is a studio functioning and offering classes. it is a bikram studio and i know about the shady shit that bikram dude did in his training seminars, but i LOVE sweating and doing the postures. i would like to know your experiences with the bikram sequence and perhaps suggestions about making the most of a hot yoga class.

Question about breathing from diaphragm and beginning yoga

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:48 PM PST

Hello everyone I had a strange health scare on December 4th and I started to read about ways to cure or calm it down

Since then I began to read about posture, tongue position, mouth breathing and how beneficial Pilates was.

I begin Pilates a month ago and love it, my posture. Is better, I feel better, I have gone 12 times private sessions and my teacher is really amazing.

Changes I have made in my life since then is 1. strengthing posture 2. Quit smoking / mouth breathing 3. Moving every 15-20 min 4. Keeping tongue on top of pallet 5. Mouth taping at night 6. Switching from coffee to green tea 7. Meditating a few times a week 8. Pilates 3x a week 9. Switching between a standing desk/chair/stool/ excersize ball when working

Now I am reading a book on breathing and see and am shocked to learn that we breathing through the nose isn't even enough but we should be doing diaphragm breathing.

Doing some research it seems yoga is really good for this so I had a few questions.

    1. Which classes would be recommended for breathing being concentrated and how often is best to go.

    2. How long does the transition take to breath from the chest /shoulders to correctly breath, and does anyone have any methods / recommendations to do from home?

    3. Can you do yoga and Pilates on the same day?

Sorry for the long post, thank you!

Returning to yoga after like 9 months off. Ouch. Any back-to-basics tips?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:16 AM PST

Much like others, the pandemic hit my mental health, and while I would do yoga on and off, I really haven't done serious yoga in about 9 months. Did a simple 30 minute routine this morning and it is clear my body needs some time to get back in action.

Any advice or routines for someone who was intermediate and feels like I am back in beginner? I don't need to be an expert by Thursday, would just like to not feel worn out with a basic sun salutation.

Still can't touch my toes after 4 years...

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 07:11 AM PST

This is a little embarrassing to admit, but after 4 years of practicing yoga i still cant touch my toes or do a proper downward dog. It's not a weight issue - I'm male, 5'11 155 pounds. Are there any specific stretches i can practice that will help me with my flexibility? My daily practice doesn't seem to be helping. Thank you!

part of me thinks yoga has made me crazy, like bonkers mad.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 02:54 PM PST

I don't feel I am able really to put my experienced thoughts into written word, but I'll try my best.

I feel yoga blew me open to this reality, or my reality, the shared or unique reality I find myself in. Now I can tell when I am in universal flow (this weird energy at the navel that kind of reminds me of the energy beam in donnie darko) and when others are also in this with me. It can be extremely overwhelming, and the energy starts to tremble through my body... and poof! release. This happens both on the mat, and off the mat. The off the mat events are what make me feel like I am insane. that I have made up this imaginary world/experience in my brain and nervous system, and it's all in my head. Or... (and I feel this one is scarier) that the other humans around me can see that I am not in flow - like everyone else is waiting for me to show up. To be present, or to turn up to the game.

Now, I'm in the western world, so it doesn't help that my external surroundings do not support the Samkhya belief system that is engrained into the teachings. And it also feels like the yoga world doesn't really help with this either - every one here in the west is so focused on asana, more for a sense of achievement of getting into a pose rather than internationally manipulating the energies within the meat suit (body). And to then move onto pranayama and meditation is something that is rarely talked about, or so it feels. sorry random sidenone there.

I guess a way to hold myself and try to support myself is to somehow try to explain my experience (even though communication is one of my lovely things my soul decided to come here with baggage) - and by sharing this experience maybe finding others who have experienced something similar (therefore somehow disproving the "I am crazy and living in my own reality" thought pattern) and if not, then hopefully if you have read this far, I have been able to be a mirror of some sorts and you have something to add to this.

summary: yoga woke me right up and now I think I'm crazy.

    Wrist Pain/Issues

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:24 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify some wrist/forearm pain I'm having in my left arm. When trying to do regular wrist stretches, just rotating them in circles to warm them up, I feel it tight when my hand is down but when it's up with the palm out and fingers up I feel a dull pain in the back of my wrist and along the thumb. The pain increases if I put weight on it, say in downward dog or any of the numerous other poses that involve being on hands, and I can feel it up the anterior of the forearm. It's been irritating me like this for about a month, I've been trying to do some wrist strengthening exercises which tend to make it go away for a little bit but then it comes back later. My only thought of what it could be is carpal tunnel? But that's just a self assessment. If anyone else has experience or insight into what it is or how to go about treating it that would be lovely! Thank you in advanced!

How to clean a jade harmony mat?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:23 AM PST

This is my first time owning a nice mat and using it actively so I'm unsure of how to clean it! It for sure doesn't need a deep clean which I read on the website how to do but I didn't see something for how to do just a light gentle wipe down of it proper and I'm hoping I'm in the right place to ask! Thanks for any advice

    Chronic tension

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 11:40 AM PST

Hi all, I'm looking for advice, because I'm starting to get desperate.

I have several health issues Rheumatoid Arthritis, digestive issues, general anxiety. But I do a really good job with listening to my body and staying active, I typically ride 12 miles (in 30 minutes) and do weight training about 3-4 days a week. I have a very health diet that works for me and my health issues (borderline vegan, gluten free and low FODMAPs). And I do my stretching everyday!

But I suffer from chronic muscle tension, particularly in my neck and jaw, to the point I have a crazy expensive-dentist-fit-peculiar-mouthguard. But that's not the only place. It seems like inside my pelvis is constantly tight and causing leg, hip, and lower back pain. I threw my back out AGAIN this past week, which halts everything, including work.

How can I learn to relax my all of my muscles so I can stop this terrible, vicious cycle? I'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Prenatal Yoga - Exercises on your back?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:00 AM PST

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and have been a dedicated yoga practitioner for over a decade. I'm able to do a normal (not prenatal) vinyasa yoga class still (my belly is still small!) but I read that in the 2nd trimester it is best to avoid exercises on your back. Is there any workaround to this? I read something about putting a pillow on your upper back? I tried that today to do abs exercises but it felt awkward. Any advice is much appreciated!

Does vision play a role in balance?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:00 PM PST

I've been practicing daily since the early fall and the transformation in my body and mind is beyond anything I could have hoped. However, I have nystagmus (involuntary eye movement) due to albinism and I'm curious if it plays a role in my struggle to balance.

I've always struggled with balance, though I'm not a clumsy person (very fit 36 y/o woman). I'm just quite bad at tasks specifically designed to target balance and I'm curious if my eye condition may be a factor. Any yogis here know the answer, or have tips to help?

    🙏

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:05 PM PST

Hii I think this was asked before but a while ago so looking for your advice! I like to do yoga in the mornings following a video but my BF sleeps late.

My Sony wireless earbuds always fall out... any suggestions for anything wireless that is secure, sweatproof with good quality sound?
