What's the difference between a forward fold and a half way lift? Posted: 09 Feb 2021 05:49 AM PST What's the difference between a forward fold and a half way lift? (Which is actually called a half forward fold but I'm all for easy-to-understand vocab) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I sense there is a misconception that a half lift is just 'backing off out the fold a bit to give yourself a little rest' when in fact a half lift is a way more ACTIVE pose than a full forward fold and some may argue a better place to stretch your hamstrings... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a forward fold: ⏺ There is compression of belly to thighs ⏺ This means those with tighter hamstrings would bend their knees ⏺ The spine is rounded giving the back a gentle stretch ⏺ It can be relatively passive as you pull against your legs to deepen the fold ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a half forward fold: ⏺ The spine is flat/long ⏺ The legs are straight (but not locked out) ⏺ It is very active as the hamstrings are engaging to hold the body in this bent over shape at the same time as trying to lengthen ⏺ The core is strengthening by also assisting in holding the torso out long ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A half forward fold is - in my opinion - a better place to work on hamstring flexibility as you are keeping the muscle engaged/strong and therefore reducing the risk of overdoing it and straining the hamstrings. Don't get me wrong - I love them both! - but a half forward fold deserves far more recognition for its benefits than I feel it currently gets. Poor thing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What do you think? Is this news to you? What are your opinions of this half fold/half lift position? [link] [comments]

How has yoga changed your life? (Thinking of starting yoga but discouraged) Posted: 09 Feb 2021 06:24 PM PST Hi all, I'm new to yoga, very new. I went two classes before the pandemic and really struggled with my balance, flexibility, and definitely couldn't relax not matter how hard I tried. I looked around and saw that everyone was relaxed, breathing rhythmically, and I could not stop fidgeting. I was uncomfortable being still in the moment and no matter how much I tried to clear my mind and just relax I couldn't help myself but to be distracted. I guess because my mind is used to always running I don't know how to just be still and quiet? It kind of discouraged me because I felt like it can't be for me if I'm like this or that it won't give me the benefits because how fidgety I am. I want to do this to better myself. Is this normal as a beginner? Did you experience this? When did yoga click for you on a deeper level? And how has this changed your life (if it did)? Thanks in advance, everyone! [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Feb 2021 01:49 PM PST I have never done yoga before and i am interested in starting. I am about 186 pounds and not very flexible. One rule im aware of is to not overpush a limit i have, like trying to do splits when my split angle could be equivalent to an acute angle. Some of my limitations other than that is big thighs and butt, so its a lot to get over, and my back doesnt stay fully flat unless ilift my legs. Is there a good place to start as a beginner? And is there anything i should consider looking at yoga styles? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:57 AM PST Humility is not thinking of yourself as less but thinking about yourself less. Don't be discouraged by the fact that uncovering your true self is a continual process, a process that has no end. Once you begin to uncover yourself, you will find that you were born with freedom, you were born with integrity, you were born with joy, and you were born with love; you've simply been conditioned to forget all these gifts. Maybe freedom for us just means hearing each other out and being compassionate toward each other's journey? And that is the point I have been waiting to arrive at—the point that is life-altering if we allow it to be. It's not about being right or wrong. Sometimes the answer is simply understanding each other deeply, and when we do that, we are all free to love, give, and grow together. [link] [comments]

What should I do to work on upper body strength to accomplish poses like wheel and arm balances? Posted: 09 Feb 2021 04:45 PM PST My upper body is very weak, I often refer to my arms as two limp noodles. I find I build strength much faster in my lower body, but it's very difficult to build up my upper body. What can I do to work on this? [link] [comments]
Need advice with back related stretches after a car trip. Posted: 09 Feb 2021 08:28 PM PST Today after I got home from a trip last night I started resuming yoga and set my practice to yin on down dog so I could get a nice stretch, I came to a halt when Half Camel appeared and normally I always struggle as an inflexible beginner with this pose but my lower back is not budging, I don't think I can make it far back enough for my hand to touch my heel even with my foot curled without injuring my back probably. I was pretty much curled up in the back of the car for a total of 18hrs trying to sleep the whole way to pass time hence the curled back part and I assume that's how I messed everything up and I'm looking on advice for fixing this? Do you guys normally just take a break from yoga or focus on gentle back stretches and such? [link] [comments]
Friend with back pain refuses to do yoga Posted: 09 Feb 2021 04:40 PM PST Hello! I am mostly here to vent and see if anyone else has had this experience, because I'm assuming it's pretty common.. I herniated a disc around 4-5 years ago, and I started doing yoga to try to recover and manage the pain. 4 years later, yoga has completely changed my life. I will say nothing about the improvement of my anxiety / depression, but it is the only thing that makes my lower back /sciatica feel any better. If I skip it for even a day, I feel the affects and increase in pain (but of course it still feels way better than when I'm not doing yoga regularly). I have a friend that has been experiencing super bad back pain the past half year or so, and found out that it is probably the same thing I had/have, a herniated disc. She's been posting all over social media for advice on pain management and healing tips, and I keep telling her 'yoga!'. She does Barre every day, so she's very fit, and from her responses to me very clearly does not plan on trying yoga. Her reasons have ranged from : 'sometimes stretching actually makes it worse.' - my response was, you have to do some research and experimenting to figure out what moves are helpful /harmful, since you have an injury. That seems pretty obvious.. 'I did yoga for a year straight, years ago, and loved it at the time. But Barre is the movement that brings me joy now'. - this one I didn't even bother with, because dude I thought we were discussing how you can heal, not how you can heal and also do your favorite thing. Barre seems GREAT for core strength which is important for this issue, but it's clearly not doing everything you need for healing. Can you really not add 15 min of yoga at the end? ——— Can I just get a 'hell yeah' from anyone else out there with a friend who is in pain but for whatever reason just refuses to take your advice, as someone that literally learned from experience with the EXACT same issue that yoga helps?!? I'm trying to let it roll off my back because it's truly not a big deal, but I'm having a really hard time understanding why the refusal to give it a go, especially when you're out here asking for advice. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day! Thanks for letting me vent ❤️ [link] [comments]
Yoga videos for a beginner that are <15 minutes? Posted: 09 Feb 2021 04:11 PM PST Still starting out and a lot of the longer videos 15+ minutes are really daunting. Find myself doing a lot less yoga when I know I've got a ~30 minute session ahead of me. Anyone have any recommendations for shorter videos (<15 minutes)? Have looked through the FAQ/sidebar and really enjoyed EckhartYoga's stuff but have already gone through most of her videos. Still pretty intimidated by the Adriene stuff. Edit: I'm also not a huge fan of the really spiritual stuff. [link] [comments]

Posted: 08 Feb 2021 11:06 PM PST The first place where I learned to be with myself. Where I learned that I was enough, that I wasn't broken, that I didn't need to be saved, that nothing was missing or empty inside. That I had all the tools I needed within me. Yoga is also the place where I learned that I was part of a greater whole. That there was a bigger picture than my own lenses of perception. Yoga is where I laughed, I cried, I dreamed, I hated and loved. On the first practices, I wanted to be perfect, to do every posture right, to be as graceful as the Ashtangis I was following on Instagram. Then I started getting injured, exhausted, burnt out and avoided the practice. Yet I kept coming back to the studio, to the mat over the years, over the major changes in my life, over the early mornings and late bus runs, over the lack of sleep. I kept at it. More than ever now. And now I know that yoga is not meant to be mastered. It's in fact a process, it's cyclical, it's like flossing your teeth every night before you go to bed. You have to do it, you keep doing it because it's good for you on the long term yet you still miss some days because you're too tired or you just forgot. But it's alright. You pick up where you left off. Yoga also gave me incredible womxn role models. All my teachers gave me such inspiration and their grace, inside & out, left me in awe and tears many times. How can one practice, a trendy sequence of physical postures, influence so many incredible people? I fell in love. Hesitated for a while, and finally took the decision to dedicate my life to not only teaching, but studying the practice. Yoga is the place where I learned to keep my heart and my mind open. That learning is a lifelong process. That beauty has many forms and can even be found in silence. It can be found in an ocean of OMs. It can be found in a room full of people's conscious breath. Full of sweat, and rubber, and the soft sound of the teacher's feet entering the class. [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Feb 2021 06:25 AM PST Hi, I'm looking for someone that is also struggling in their yoga practice. Hoping to get back to a daily practice and would love to connect with someone also needing a little encouragement. I typically use Down Dog, with the occasional studio practice. [link] [comments]
| Posted: 09 Feb 2021 11:49 AM PST Hi there, So I'm doing yoga for some time and the practice of the different Asanas are very refreshing and awakening. But...isn't there much more to it? I mean, spiritual? I've read that I can practice my loving kindness, mindfulness, awareness, compassion and get in contact with my inner self. Yoga, as it's taught in the West seems to be more of a sport with some wellness factors. But how to learn the real stuff? Yoga, as a holistic spiritual practice? Any YouTube channels or anything? | Posted: 09 Feb 2021 06:34 AM PST Hi y'all, I am a 200hr RYT and am also a mental health professional. Soon I will gain full licensure (LCSW) and have really been contemplating the idea of becoming a yoga therapist.. I'd love to create private or small group classes for yoga for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, etc. Does anyone else here have experience with this or are doing something similar? Do I need to become a yoga therapist if I am already a licensed therapist? Or could I just continue with behavioral health specific yoga coursework or CE's? Thanks for your feedback!
