[COMP] I've been teaching daily "mini" practices via Facebook live for the past few weeks from my garden in Bali while we're back in lock-down, and I'm really enjoying it! Here's a fun Goddess flow

How much experience to be a yoga teacher?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 10:03 AM PDT

Wondering what everyone's thoughts are on how much experience one should have before teaching yoga. I'm sure there are lots of different certification programs out there, but I know a few people who have mentioned getting their "200 hour teacher training certification" specifically. These individuals haven't been practicing very long (like less than two years) and I feel like that's probably not long enough to provide deep, quality instruction... but I also don't know very much! TIA

How exactly do you incorporate mindfulness into yoga to gain the mental benefits?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 03:51 PM PDT

I deal with anxious racing thoughts, inattentiveness and depression. I am new to this and hope to maximize the mental benefits of yoga while also staying fit (I understand that it is not a magic cure). After my first session I found myself focusing on the sore parts of my body and just trying to maintain balance. I am aware that practice will lead to less pain and better balance. Should I be aiming to just focus on my breath or something different? What has your experience been with this? Thanks

Drop in classes in Los Angeles? Does anyone know of drop in or donation-based classes in LA? I looked online but most of the information is old. (Preferably near Downtown or the Valley) without having to subscribe to classes or drop a huge amount

    Ideas for yoga without inversions!

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:05 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

My boyfriend has a condition that means he can't do inversions or anything too strenuous, but I'd love to do some yoga with him. Has anyone seen a yoga flow without inversions?
So far, I have seated side bends, twists, hip circles and forward folds with a flat back. Not totally sure how to get from seated to standing without downward dog... but then, the warrior poses, tree pose, squat. Then, lying twists, pigeon etc.

Would love any suggestions or ideas! Thank you kindly!

    Yoga and music

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 03:34 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm new to yoga. My environment is quite loud and distracting, so I keep my headphones on, with nature sounds, relaxing music or sometimes off just to enjoy a little silence... So I was wondering, what do you guys listen to ? Do you have artists you would recommend ? Do you listen to the same music while meditating/relaxing/doing yoga?
(Sorry for mistakes, it's not my first language and I'm out of practice...)

    Cramping in feet?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 09:25 AM PDT

I feel a lot of pain in my feet in certain positions. This is a dull pain like a muscle cramp. This is usually in some rooted position like warrior three, tree, or eagle pose.

Any tips on correcting for this? I'm out of practice on the mat but I do walk 3 - 5 miles a day.

Fellow Instructors: How do you manage your social media stuff?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 11:27 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Asked the same on r/YogaTeachers but it's inactive it seems.. So here we go:

My girlfriend is starting her yoga instruction side gig next week, we're so excited! We clearly understand that social media presence is critical for business & being helpful to people and wonder what kinds of things do you do that get shared? This really makes her anxious since it's her first side gig & also she needs to focus on finding clients, but social media stuff is just.. stressful.

She has decided to buy Canva templates and edit them since designing takes A LOT of time & most designs ready made on Canva are used by others already.. Found this social media set which looks SO beautiful with stories, posts and all that. She's getting her logo done and will use it with these.

But the content part is important, too. If you have any recommendations on content & scheduling, please give us tips!

    Thanks :)

How often should Sleeper stretch be done on your shoulders?

Is it worth doing every week or is it just done by people who have shoulder problems?

    My toga teacher training experience

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 11:55 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I went through a 200 hour Yoga Alliance teacher training program in early 2020, and I was recently reviewing my notes. I wanted to share some of what I wrote down. I consider myself to be a critical thinker, and I was surprised by some of what the teacher said during the program. For context, this was an English-language program in Thailand that lasted for about 3.5 weeks. I took notes during our discussions/classes about philosophy and chanting, and here are some of the more unusual or unexpected things that the teacher said. Some of these are direct quotes (as I wrote them down immediately), and some of these are paraphrasing/summarizing what the teacher said.

    • "God, stop nitpicking. It's very simple. What don't you understand?" (said in a raised voice)
    • "Microwaves kill vitamins and neutralize the minerals."
    • "Vegetarians tend to be fatter than carnivores."
    • Life force dissipates from fruits and vegetables within a few minutes of picking. The taste is different within five minutes.
    • Banks will collapse in the next few days
    • "Why the fuck would you forget the Om?"
    • British medicine was rubbish until the British went to India and encountered ayurvedic medicine.
    • "He looks a bit gay to me" (said when seeing a picture of a student's boyfriend)
    • "Serotonin is mainly released upon birth and death."
    • "What do you mean 'think?' I know." (said in response to a student questioning him)
    • "Don't contradict me." (said in response to a student questioning him)
    • Palm oil can dissolve the protective sheath around coronavirus. That is why we don't have coronavirus in Thailand.
    • "I sensed a dark energy around him" (talking about a friend of his who committed suicide)
    • Pathogens cannot survive in the blood beyond a certain temperature.
    • Breathing through the mouth will over-oxygenate your blood, causing you to get dizzy.
    • When there is a full moon or a new moon the gravity and the moon energy affect us, just like gravity and everything else affects the tides. Our bodies are mostly water.
    • Eight hours of sleep is way too much, you don't need that much.
    • "In China right now, there is the cleanest air in the world because people aren't driving around."
    • In the USA after 9/11 the air was really clean.
    • You can learn a technique to see people's energy. Spiritual people are white/yellow. Dark energy means negative emotions.
    • Sweat is good for the skin, it makes the skin supple.
    • If your hands are facing up when you meditate in the evening, you won't sleep well. If you have your hands facing down, you will sleep well.
    • Sanskrit means 'sand script.'
    • Menstrual cycle is affected by the moon
    • Toxins don't come out in sweat, toxins come out as a gas.

    Yoga Retreats

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:25 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering is anyone knows about volunteering at yoga retreats on a long term basis? I'm talking a few years.

I've come to a bit of a cross roads in my life and I dont know where to go or what to do. I had a bit of an epiphany last night that I should do some volunteer work at a yoga retreat or an ashram. I'm also starting my OU degree in October which should take 6 years. A lot of the retreats ive have a maximum stay so I'm not even sure if what I'm looking for exists.

If anyone has any information or advice that would be amazing. Thank you❤

How to overcome tight calves? Can yoga help?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 10:25 PM PDT

So i'm a runner and i love doing sprints. I've been running for years and never have had a problem with my calves. In april i noticed my calves got extremely tight and had a dull aching pain in them. I took two months off from sprinting and running in general and focused on strengthening them.

After two months my calves were feeling good so i started running again. Today marks the 8th day since i started running again and…my calves are starting to get tight and hurt again ofc.

Before my run i warmup my calves for about 10 minutes and i static stretch them. After the stretch i then roll them out for 10 minutes with a massage ball. Then i warmup again for another 10-15 (10 of those focusing on my calves) and then i finally go for my run. After my run i warmup my calves again for a minute or two, static stretch them, roll them out, then ice them. I also stretch them in the morning and before i go to bed without warming up.

Is there anything i'm doing wrong or anything else i should do? I'm not really sure if yoga can help with this but it's worth a try asking for help. Any advice is appreciated
