    Sore hamstrings

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 12:31 AM PDT

I am new to ashtanga (been practicing for few months), but I've been doing yoga for about two years by my own. I never had any problems or injuries even tho i was doing asanas by myself, but since I've come to ashtanga i have constantly been experiencing some smaller injuries. I feel as harder i try to do poses right the more i hurt myself.

Right now i am experiencing hamstrings pain from i guess overstreching (i never had hamstring problems until recently). The tight and slightly painful sensation is in both of my legs from behind my knees to let's say center of my hamstrings. I took a week of my practice completely and the soreness was kinda gone but as soon as i got back to practicing it was back. I also experience mild knees pain from probably lotus. I modify now a lot (like my legs are basically 90 degrees when I forward fold lol, and i skip some poses that are unreachable).

I am trying to stay positive about my practice and patience with progress, but it still gets frustrating and discouraging a little, specially when i feel really connected to ashtanga as the way of expressing my body (i used to be ballet dancer when i was little so movement is very important to me). Any kind of advice would be appreciated .

Favorite Led Ashtanga Videos for Beginners

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 12:46 PM PDT

I have been attending a led class for beginners 2x/week since early January. My shala is closed for now due to COVID-19. I want to continue practicing on my own at home using led primary series videos. I am just starting to really see and feel changes in my body/stamina/understanding now and don't want to lose momentum! (And perhaps this will be the beginning of my personal daily practice.) Do you have any favorite instructors or videos to recommend on YouTube, Amazon Prime, etc? There's some stuff I've found already but if anyone has a recommendation I'd love to check it out!

After 3 years of self practice Ashtanga, Hatha yoga and Mahamudras, I am now enrolling for a 2 year advanced diploma in Yoga. I have a few questions.

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 11:04 AM PDT

I am enrolling in "Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan" in India. It is an Indian Govt. recognised institute and was founded in 1950. My intention is to teach while maintaining my entrepreneurial activities. Maybe even open up my own yoga school some day.

My questions: 1. Does anybody have experience doing something similar? 2. Is affiliation to Yoga Alliance really necessary?

    Paying my abo during COVID-19

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 11:45 AM PDT

Fellow redditors, i wanted to ask your opinion. I'm regulary practicing at a local shala and I have a really great teacher that i appreciate a lot and she fully dedicated her life to us and this shala (e.g. no side jobs). She opened the studio about 3 years ago and is also pregnant now. Of course during COVID-19 the shala will be closed and students will not pay the abonnements.. I do not know my teachers financial situation but doing the math i can imagine it must be hard to come by in general and now during shut down this will be quite a "financial hit" for her. I'm earning decent money (I'm not "rich") but i get by well. So i was thinking of just going on to send her my monthly abo payment as support. But i really don't want it to to come over as "charity" or "snobbish"... What do you guys think?

Getting a head start on the harder postures in Primary

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:49 AM PDT

I'm just starting out in Ashtanga and am currently doing a beginners class which leaves out about 25% of the postures. I was wanting to get some advice on what the most difficult postures (or movements) were in Primary (eg, postures which involve lotus or legs/feet behind the head), and whether it was worth trying to build towards those postures early on as they will obviously take the longest to achieve. For the hardest postures, did anyone have some daily stretches (or drills) which would help me get there eventually? For example with jumping back I have read that Lolasana is a good place to begin to build up to this. Many thanks, Paul.
