Simple hack to make meditation easier and more relaxing Posted: 26 Mar 2020 06:27 PM PDT Lay down. There is no ancient law dictating you must sit in lotus position on a zafu to meditate. I've been meditating for an hour a day for many years, and have found no huge difference between meditating upright as opposed to laying down in bed. It takes a little bit more discipline, but once you get used to it, you might find you can meditate effortlessly for a longer duration. Last night my meditation lasted almost two hours. No leg falling asleep, no struggling to sit up straight, no fatigue. And when you wake up, you feel like you had a full night of sleep, and life has just begun. After laying in zen for a couple hours, you can steep a cup of tea, and continue to follow your breath, and savor each sip of warm water in silence. If you follow this little routine each day, preferably a few hours before bed, and you ignore the internet, I predict you'll have a deep, restful sleep. Not a bad investment of two hours of your time. [link] [comments] |
Meditation + Qi Gong + Mindfulness Videos: Some of my Favorites Posted: 26 Mar 2020 08:24 PM PDT It goes without saying that a lot of us are stressed by the current climate, this statement is as true today as it has ever been. Every generation has their major stressors, be it war, environmental or economic disaster, disease etc. Right now there is a quite a potent combination of these factors that are causing people an undue amount of stress. Here are a few meditation resources I have found helpful over the last few years as I have been honing in on my own meditation/mindfulness practice. I have been meditating for a few years now. My practice has been inconsistent but what little meditating I have done I have found it invaluable as a means of experiencing peace of mind, which was most important to me. I have also found it to be an effective way to increase my focus, because when my mind is quiet, I find focus easy and enjoyable. I've compiled a list of some great resources I have come across on Youtube. MEDITATION This video was one of the first that I saw that communicated the idea of the 'Monkey Mind'. This constant thinking all the time was a product of this Monkey Mind, and it was our choice whether or not we wanted to indulge this thinking or to find some other productive outlet for it. In this video the call to action is to have the Monkey Mind 'Watch the Breath'. I find myself, in times where my thinking mind is over active, rest my attention on my breath, and I can feel the tension caused by overthinking be relieved almost instantly. I think the breath is our most fundamentally useful tool in relaxation, concentration, focus and ultimately, peace. Mingyur Rinpoche - How to Train Your Monkey Mind- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PkrhH-bkpk I read the book Peace is Every Step a few years ago when I first decided to learn about meditation. I really liked the idea of the walking meditation that he describes in his book and I found this video that is a great companion for the Walking Meditation Exercise found in his book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdO1vZJgUu0 I also found this Walking Meditation Guide on Berkley website, taken from Jon Kabbat-Zinn https://ggia.berkeley.edu/practice/walking_meditation Another video explaining the Walking Meditation practice https://youtu.be/_IFvablc6EI?t=230 Qi Gong Another practice I found to be hugely beneficial for my body and mind is Qi Gong/Tai Chi. This video helped me to understand that these slow movements are done in combination with the breath and the imagination. This Tedx Talk gave me a insight into the philosphy of Qi Gong/ Tai chi and other practices whos purpose is to increase the life energy of the practitioner. Taiji/yinyang philosophy: Chungliang Al Huang at TEDxHendrixCollege https://youtu.be/8TSEnoAa39s Ken Cohen has a cool video explaining Qi Gong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtdGniKSQJk Here is a routine that I enjoy, a great practice for the lower back. Yoga This is the tightest Yoga video of our time. This is a timeless, chic classic. This guy, Eric Schiffman, has a book on yoga. His advice that helped me the most is that our breath is the driver of the movement. Be aware of your breath first and allow it to guide your movement. Also, find your 'edge' of each movement. Meaning, go as deep into the breath and stretch as is comfortable, once you find the edge, stay there and breath into it. At least that's how I came to understand it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNt9qP0_hYI&t=1787s Guided Meditations: These guided meditations are a great way for a beginner meditation to relax completely and allow themselves to be led into a peaceful state. Mcmaster's Guided Meditations- https://wellness.mcmaster.ca/topics/mindfulness-and-relaxation/ Mcmaster university compiled a few different meditation techniques, I have found it to be a useful resource. I have done the Autogenic Training and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Progressive muscle relaxation is also a great practice for anyone who has never tried it. These are methods to relax your mind/nervous system. Mishlove Meditation- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O2EmFYL8ks&t=95s This fella, Jeffrey Mishlove, had a show on PBS in the 80s called THINKING ALLOWED. He conducts interviews with people who are experts/students in interesting topics ranging from spirituality to paranormal phenomenon. He still produces YouTube videos regularly, I've enjoyed many of the conversations on this channel. This is a guided meditation he produced a little while ago. I honestly haven't listened to the full thing yet. Mishlove Guided meditation with lady- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyfC2NTZOz8 I listened to this meditation a few months ago and I enjoy the concepts of building a paradise within your imagination. In one exercise my vision of a paradise came to mind, and when I think about it, the feeling of being there and some of the scenes flood back into mind like I have actually been to this place. Very interesting guided meditation, one I can recommend Paul Mckenna health meditation- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmZkIlGyZRM This guided meditation for health is a great resource for self talk. I have listened to this one many times before bed. Doing a breathing practice followed by this guided meditation helped me get more involved with my health from an internal perspective. I now 'go within' more regularly, meaning, I close my eyes, breathe easily, relax and begin to feel sensations in my body. I realized when I first began doing this just how unconscious I really was about my own internal processes. A meditation like this has helped my health practice. John Kabat Zinn- Body Scan- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4gZgnCy5ew- I have not heard this one but I would be curious if anyone has done it and if they like it. Shakti- Thinking Allowed- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZon_4dfwtg 3 entities that will tie back to Source: Visualization/Imagery Page+ Video Links+ Meditation Descriptions+ Meditation Tools HeartSCAPE Meditation- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvV5iQXvTfg Loving Kindness Meditation- Kristin Neff- https://self-compassion.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/LKM_cleaned.mp3 List- https://self-compassion.org/category/exercises/#guided-meditations Some of these I've seen, other I haven't. Don't wait until you're dead to rest in peace. Posted: 26 Mar 2020 05:01 AM PDT You can rest in peace right here and now by just being aware of yourself and your inner body. Whenever you tune in to the present moment, immediately you start relaxing. Since becoming aware of this, I've realised that sometimes I'm tense for no reason. There's never really a reason to be tense most of the time though, if not all the time. So wherever I am and whatever I'm doing, I always make a conscious decision to remain relaxed. You can try it now, just become aware of your body and just relax any tension in it. This is resting in peace. I love sharing these realisations in any way that I can to receptive people, especially through music. The title of this post is actually a line from this song I wrote yesterday. It's called 'window' and it's about how no matter whats going on externally, we're always looking from the same space of awareness. The window we look through is different, but the room and the space we look out from is one and the same. This basically points to the fact that we are all one. [link] [comments] |
Beginner's Tip to Help Calm the Torrent of Thoughts. Posted: 27 Mar 2020 03:18 AM PDT After around 4-5 months of meditating I would still have a lot of sessions which would be dominated by my thoughts until I saw this tip for beginner's posted here and found it really helpful so because I couldn't find it again I thought I'd share it for any beginner's lurking around or people still with a very active mind. The next time you sit down for your session and you start to notice thoughts, don't immediately return to your object of focus after noticing the thought. Instead once you've observed the thought, whether it be a thought about a task you have to do in the future, a message to reply, an event that happened in the past etc., let it play out all the way and observe it while doing so. I've personally noticed that the difference between the two is when you force yourself to move away from the thought as soon as it arises, it often comes back within a few seconds/minutes with the same level of intensity. However when I started implementing this trick, I noticed by observing the thought and let it play out it often would end a lot quicker than if I was to attempt to immediately return to my breath after noticing the distraction. I wish I had the original post so I could repost it and credit the original author because their advice was written very well but hopefully this helps. ~AJ [link] [comments] |

My capacity to meditate changes drastically from day to day Posted: 27 Mar 2020 04:13 AM PDT I have been meditating for 20min every morning for the past 3 months (focusing on the body). I have been using an app and on some days I am able to quiet my mind for very long periods of time (85% calm) and other days I get tangled up in my thoughts and can't shut my monkey mind (35% calm). I controlled for sleep quality the night before and although it does affect my mood, it doesn't really affect my meditation. My question is: What are the factors that influence your capacity to meditate day to day? And how to optimize it to the fullest? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Mar 2020 02:02 AM PDT Hello, I have been trying to stay calm and reduce my stress for the last few days. It has not been easy for me for the last 2-3 years or so. Beginning of 2019, I moved to a new non-english speaking country which I really wanted to relocate to. However since moving here, I haven't been able to settle down at all. I kept changing apartments and ended up focusing on the not so important things in the beginning. Finally last month when things looked better for me and I was able to form a small routine, everything went south again for me. I was let go from my job due to the current situation. And from next month I don't even have an apartment to live with some furniture that I am not able to sell and don't know what to do with it. I am trying to stay calm and focus on the things that are most important but things are somehow not that easy for me. I have both headspace and calm but by the time I finish my exercise I have no idea what did the author of the exercise spoke and it feels like the meditation exercise was a waste. Can someone please help me how to cope up with this situation? any suggest any advice would be really appreciated at this moment. [link] [comments] |
Does weed hinders anyone else's meditative practice? Posted: 27 Mar 2020 04:45 AM PDT So I have noticed that when I smoke weed I have a much harder time entering the meditative state. I do meditate whilst high as this is pointless, what I'm referring to is meditating during the 2 or 3 days that follow after I have smoked weed. I have gone periods where I don't smoke for several weeks and in this period my ability to concentrate my awareness becomes very strong but the days after I have smoked, it becomes more frustrating and difficult when meditating. It almost feels like I get to a certain point in my meditative practice and then smoking takes me back down a few levels. Has anyone else experienced this? [link] [comments] |
Spontaneous humming while meditating? Posted: 27 Mar 2020 04:44 AM PDT I've found recently that, when my mind is either particularly cluttered or particularly clear during meditation, I start humming these single tones with every exhale of my breath. I don't make the conscious decision to do so and I find I can't really stop until it eventually stops itself, but it creates a rather pleasant sensation while I do, like the feeling of the hum goes right the way up into my head and clears everything else away. Is this normal, are my throat muscles just used to humming now, or is it something else? [link] [comments] |
URGENT CALL FOR 1 MILLION MEDITATORS TO LIBERATE AND RECLAIM OUR WORLD Posted: 27 Mar 2020 04:09 AM PDT This is from /r/starseeds - mods please stick this thread to the top Before I paste the message below, we're all different and have different beliefs and that's fine but the world is struggling right now and we all want this pandemic to go away, we all want to raise our awareness and lead a more balanced life. Yesterday in the UK people came out of their houses at 8pm to applaud NHS workers, which makes everyone feel good, and is a nice gesture. However it's possible there is actually a way to make a real difference to this world and by doing something we all, already do. Meditating! Specifically at the same time, with the same intentions. So please read this message and join in at the appropriate time for your location, it's going to be an early start for some of us. If it does nothing, then you would have spent 20 minutes trying your best, if it works then it will bring in a new era. Here's the message, share it with friends and family, don't break isolation to form groups, we will form a group in meditation worldwide. Finally and importantly, save this message so that you can access the contents if the Internet were to crash, do this as soon as you have finished reading, work out the time for your location and make a note in your diary with an alarm or several alarms if necessary! Namaste. URGENT CALL An open letter and cosmic invitation to spiritual leaders and influencers around the globe On April 4, 2020 a tremendous Astrological Portal will open, through which humanity must UNITE AS ONE MIND, ONE CONSCIOUSNESS and by so doing take great strides in reclaiming our independence from the financial debt slave system instituted 700 years ago, dissolve the old world structures, erase the coronavirus and the fear surrounding it and end the 5G network and its deadly radiation (likely a major factor in what happened in Wuhan, China with reports now surfacing that as many as 3 million people may have died from radiation poisoning in that province). The power that we will have at our disposal on APRIL 4th is truly Astronomical in the most literal sense when the planets of Jupiter and Pluto come together in the sky that day! We intend to harness this powerful astrological alignment and creative a massive SHIFT for humanity in the most positive and harmonious direction possible, but this will require MASS PARTICIPATION and a joining of Hearts and Minds with singular focus and intention on a level that has not yet been reached on planet Earth!!! With all of this global chaos swirling around us, it is imperative that we the true Bearers of Light come together in a Global Meditation on April 4th and with profound heartfelt love Unite As One Million Points of Light who will anchor in the energies of Peace, Harmony, Abundance, Freedom, Healing and the most positive Ascension Timeline imaginable! No doubt most, if not all, who read this letter already believe in and promote the power of meditation as a tool for spiritual growth, healing and manifestation and that is commendable. You are now being asked to expand that power by reaching out to all who follow your social media pages and read your books or blogs and communicate that MASS MEDITATIONS on a GLOBAL SCALE need to become a Top Priority, beginning with the powerful Astrological Ascension Portal that will open April 4, 2020 when an unprecedented wave of light (5D gamma waves) will flood our planet. There are Legions of Light Beings that have entered our galaxy at this time to assist us in our ascension and help direct this high dimensional light our way on that momentous day. Whatever your personal view or belief about ascension/evolution might be at this juncture, we can all agree that it is beyond time for us to advance our consciousness as a collective for the upliftment and healing of all beings on Earth. The best possible way to do this is with MASS MEDITATION! The greater the numbers the grander the results!! We must harness our power collectively and come together in much larger numbers to meditate, more often, and especially on key strategic dates and times with a singular focus. This is the ONLY WAY we are going to evolve or ascend as a society and put an end to all this madness! GLOBAL MASS MEDITATIONS ARE THE KEY TO OUR LIBERATION AND THE QUANTUM LEAP WE ALL LONG FOR IN HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS! For us to be successful in this endeavor, we must set aside our perceived differences, viewpoints, opinions, judgments of others or what we may or may not like about their personalities, and especially not allow certain words or phrases to "trigger" us in a negative way and prevent us from coming together, as these types of separations and divisions are what have been holding us back as a planet for so long! From this moment on, let us dispense with persons and personalities, names and labels, egos and personal agendas. Let us unite and focus solely on the end goal – TO END THE SUFFERING. Following are the links and instructions to join the meditation, but we urge you to read the rest of this letter so that you can see why this Global Meditation is so important and for the proper stage to be set. We need to explain the meaning and true intention behind the words being used so no one misinterprets the information and fails to participate as a result. We need each and every one of you participating to ensure we have ONE MILLION ACTIVE MEDITATORS on April 4th!!! Please forward this letter to everyone in your sphere of influence to quickly spread the word far and wide around the globe! This information must be dispersed quickly so groups and individuals can begin making their plans to participate. ******************************************************* A Mass Meditation called "Ascension Timeline Meditation" is being organized for April 4, 2020 at exactly 10:45 pm EST (eastern standard time U.S.) for 20 minutes and we need you to help us mobilize the greatest army of meditators this world has ever seen! ********************************************************* [link] [comments] |

Can’t focus on my breaths in meditation, makes achieving a meditative state hard Posted: 27 Mar 2020 12:06 AM PDT When i sit with an erect spine and being the attention to my breaths, i breath from my chest and not my lower lungs/or diaphragm. Everytime i try to focus on my breaths i'm aware of how improper i'm breathing because i feel a tightening just below heart sort of? I can't explain where the tightness is. I guess my main question is there any breathing exercises that can help me attain proper breathing? When i bring my attention to my breath i become so much more aware how improper i'm breathing. It's making meditation so hard [link] [comments] |
Zafus and experience with various fillings Posted: 27 Mar 2020 03:42 AM PDT Hey all! I've been meditating and practicing mindfulness on a regular basis for the past few years, and recently figured I should probably have some form of cushion to help me out. A few towels folded over several times has offered me decent support, but I'd be looking to make myself more of a true zafu (rather than buy one). Sourcing materials would be of bad taste right now, and the amount of buckweath hulls or even kapok I'd need for a properly sized cushion seems prohibitively expensive (I'm 6'4"/193cm) for my admitedly rough estimate. I want to finish on the fact that any fiber/filler I go out and pick will be screened thru, dried and baked to eliminate the risk of brining pests in. I'm looking for your input on this! Cheers! Posted: 27 Mar 2020 03:29 AM PDT Aphantasia is a condition where a person cannot visualize imagery in their mind. I have aphentasia and im fairly new to meditation. A lot of guided meditations i have found involve visualizing certain things, this is something i am incapable of. The most common ive cone across is visualizing breathing in light. Im concerned tgat i may not be able to properly meditate due to my condition. Sonetimes during intense meditation i may see very faint fractals but never anything more than that. Any advice or outlooks would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
A crazy experience meditating after smoking weed. (Kind of a long story) Posted: 26 Mar 2020 08:42 AM PDT So I smoked outside, and started heading inside. Then I realized all I'm gonna do if I go inside is immediately watch tv or listen to music. So, I decided to just sit outside for a while and look at the stars. I saw some shooting stars, I realized how tiny earth is, and I saw the North Star and realized it's the same star that guided people just like me thousands of years ago. Billions and billions of humans have looked at that exact star, kind of blew my mind. Anyway, the biggest thing was realizing how worried I was about someone seeing me and thinking I looked weird. I'm just a perosn with a short time on this rock that's flying through, idk, space? At 67,000 miles an hour. Why should I feel ashamed for taking a minute to look at what's off of this thing? So I went back inside and just decided to meditate on this. I was able to COMPELTWLY clear my mind of every single thought. I felt like I was floating. My heart felt so free, like I've been having severe anxiety and forgot what a normal heartbeat felt like. I felt like I was breathing gigantic breaths. I could catch myself start worrying about if someone was going to see me, and I could literally feel the anxiety in my heart, and I was able to get rid of it. I felt like I was ABOVE all my thoughts. I just focused on some instrumental music and kind of let that guide everything. It really helped me realize how much I've been worrying, and how that worrying has been physically and subconsciously affecting my every moment. [link] [comments] |
Can we get a stickied megathread for all of the online offerings meditation centers have right now? Posted: 26 Mar 2020 12:08 PM PDT Pretty much every meditation center and organization is offering some form of online meditation or dharma talk right now. It would be invaluable to have a compiled list of these offerings for people in isolation looking to practice in solidarity with others. Mods, can we make this happen? Here's my contribution - the San Francisco Dharma Collective has a calendar here that has stuff scheduled every day of the week :) May you all be healthy and happy <3 [link] [comments] |
Am I developing Schizo symptoms or is this part and parcel of 'spiritual experience'? Posted: 27 Mar 2020 02:07 AM PDT "The psychotic drowns in the same waters in which the mystic swims with delight" - Joseph Campbell Since starting a daily meditation practice years ago and going on a retreat, I noticed that the way I perceive reality has changed fundamentally, I almost seem to be developing 'schizotypal symptoms': magical thinking, odd & eccentric beliefs. All this was precipitated by a 'A&P'/2nd vipassana nana event I had at a retreat where my body was disappearing, all I felt was vibrations and bursts of pleasure lasting for hours. Never took any substances before in my life, all this was from pure anapana/vipassana.
I'm lucid enough to recognize what other people would see as 'magical thinking' so I keep quiet about it, but it FEELS very much real to me. Its like I'm inhabiting an entirely different reality from the people around me and I just feel like this aloof neutral observer, everything is just a play of sensations with no stable grounding. I still go about daily life and I know how to act normal very well but everything just seems like a giant dream lol and it feels like what my 'real self' wants to do is hole up somewhere and just meditate indefinitely. So my question is: How do I know all this is not me developing schizophrenia and rationalizing it under the guise of spiritual experience? Is there even a difference, and if so, how would I know? Not really asking for a diagnosis, just wondering if anyone has similar experiences and how did you deal with it (or not)? [link] [comments] |

Meditation is my most powerful tool against Bipolar Disorder Type One Posted: 26 Mar 2020 08:02 AM PDT At my doctors recommendation I started meditating three years ago. After a year of practicing multiple times a week, the benefits of meditation were so powerful they could keep me from becoming manic.
