Beginner level yogis – what do you feel is sometimes glossed over in classes which you would like more guidance on?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 09:31 AM PDT

I, like many other yoga teachers right now, am stuck at home with most of my classes cancelled, so I'm going to be making some instructional videos aimed at beginners to pass the time. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    Ayurvedic water bottle?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Anyone ever used copper water bottles in their yoga practice? A girl in my yoga class (before it was cancelled indefinitely of course) always brought one and I was always interested in its supposed connection with India and Ayurvedic medicine. Have my eye on this one. They seem pretty chic but I don't want to just get another bottle that sits in my cupboard, y'know? https://www.copperh2o.com

Tim Senesi should get more love on this sub

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 06:58 AM PDT

I often see posts about Adriene, but while cooped up in my apartment for days I realized that I can get a higher dose of Tim. Maybe because he doesn't talk as much (that pep talk can get really repetitive), or maybe because his videos are a bit more challenging.

I'm baffled that he only has 80k subscribers on YouTube while she has 6.2M. He deserves more love and implicitly $$$ for his great work.

Feet placement in tadasana, forward fold, etc.?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 10:40 AM PDT

In poses like tadasana, forward fold, chair, halfway lift, etc. sometimes I've been cued to place my feet hip-width apart and sometimes I've been cued to place them together with my toes touching.

What is the difference or benefit to these different foot placements?

If you put your feet together, is it supposed to turn your thighs inward? When I put my feet together my legs feel like they're bowing out. Is it supposed to feel like this?

Please with all sincerity what are the thoughts of the yogis here on the usage of ganja for yoga practice? Would it impede the spirit is what I am saying? I have gone to yoga blazed and then sober for a lot of practices. I find I can possibly push my body more when I am blazed ;however, I

Manduka eKO vs. Prana Indigena vs. Tranquil Yogi cork mat

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 03:43 PM PDT

I have done a ton of research looking to invest in a long-lasting mat for my daily home practice (including checking the FAQ and old threads here)... and I've more or less narrowed it down to these three.

    https://www.manduka.com/products/eko-yoga-mat-6mm?variant=23736527159354

    https://global.prana.com/p/indigena-natural-yoga-mat/U6WGMT112.html?dwvar_U6WGMT112_color=Black

    https://tranquilyogi.com/products/5mm-natural-cork-and-rubber-yoga-mat

I would love any insights on these mats- or if you catch the vibe of what I'm looking for and have another to suggest I would appreciate that too!

    My use/priorities:

-solid grip for mainly vinyasa practice, not too "squishy"/ie. unstable

    -strong preference for eco-friendly materials

    -minor sweat only

-no rough texture, my skin is sensitive and I am so distracted when my mat has uncomfortable texture

-as a bonus I would love the have a central alignment line (ambivalent about other markings)

    Thanks!

Does anybody else hate cow face pose?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 03:43 PM PDT

I've been practicing yoga for a few years, and anytime I hear "Gomukhasana" I immediately cant wait for the following 3 min of class to fast forward. I'm quite flexible but this really hurts my hips, maybe because I have slightly narrow hips and hips dips? Any advice of how to modify this pose would be appreciated! Or maybe I'm not the only one who feels this way?

Looking for yoga videos for small spaces

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 03:30 PM PDT

I have a somewhat small area to practice yoga. I don't have much ability to stretch my arms or legs beyond the long sides of my mat. At the very top of my mat I have about a foot of room to stretch, so if I'm doing a flow (for example, going from tadasana to urdhva hastasana to uttanasana, etc) I can stretch my arms to the side. Or, if I back up and do that kind of flow more to the middle of the mat or the back, then I can stretch my arms out front.

Anyways, I'm looking for videos that are suitable for this space. I usually modify the practice as I go when I'm watching most videos that require more space, but it kinda takes me out of it. So far I've found one video that works well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEYutaXkXFU It's not very long so a longer practice would be ideal, but I'll take anything I can get.

Anyone else's knees hurt from warrior poses and lunges?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 03:06 PM PDT

Just as the title says, my knees ache after maybe a minute holding warrior 1, and really aches after holding warrior 2. Lunges aren't nearly as bad but still doesn't feel very good. Is this normal? I've only been practicing for a couple of months now and I'm hoping in time it goes away. I am a bit overweight and out of shape so maybe those poses are too hard on my knees.

    Thanks in advance yogis Namaste.

Pincha Mayurasana - Forearm Stand Press tips?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 02:42 PM PDT

I can get into & hold pincha mayurasana/forearm stand. I get into it with split legs; think dolphin pose, but with one leg in the air. This way I can shift the weight forward with one of my legs and float into it, rather than jumping.

I can press into headstand, but for the life of me I can't seem to pike or even straddle press into pincha (though i can pupply press). I just feel like when I try to press up with both legs straight, I am going to face plant. The only time I can press up with straight legs is if my hands are clasps and I press my forehead into my hands (essentially just like headstand?). I'm not lacking flexibility or strength so I can't understand why I cannot press into this!! As much as I press my elbows into the ground my legs do not want to float into a press.

    Please any tips here?

Should I learn yoga myself or go to a class? And which types should I do?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 08:38 AM PDT

I wanna join a yoga class because it's simpler and all with a personal teacher, but here's where my insecurity kicks in. All the yoga classes in my area is probably all female dominated, and it's really intimidating me. I haven't heard of one male who does yoga that I personally know of. A friend of me straight up just said "don't do it, it's for girls". I know he's wrong but I just really hate getting weird looks and I can't deal with it. So maybe I'll just do it at home, but then I have a few questions. I heard there are many types of yoga, and which ones should I do? I really wanna focus on strength, flexibility and I feel like I need some sort of meditation excercise since I have serious motivation and low energy problems as well as other self created mental health issues. I've personally tried to do strength training at home, but motivation wasn't really there. I have a feeling the relaxed and more alert feeling after a yoga session will keep me motivated to do it consistently.

I'm very unfit, most of my days I just sit down often in a nerd neck pose. I can't even sit in a kneeling position, I'm just so rigid. I'm physically weak as well, and want to build more muscle mass, as well as maintaining a leaner physique, which I think yoga will do. So wanting to improve all these three areas, what type of yoga forms should I do?
