    [COMP] Working on Paschimottanasana

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:31 PM PDT

I just learnt a very important thing from listening to a talk from Ajahn Brahm on Buddhism and I thought it is a absolutely essential for yoga

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 08:00 AM PDT

So Ajahn basically says that in our modern world, we are all fixers. Curers. When something isn't right, we always want to fix it. Get rid of it. Even when were patient, which is good ofc, we're still just waiting for something to happen.

He says that this attitude makes things worse. We cannot cure life. We cannot cure the body.

The only thing we are able to do is care for the body. Caring means to work with our problem. Accepting it. Letting go of the willingness to change anything about it.

Curing doesn't work because it puts out mind into a stress situation. We think that something is wrong on a very deep level and that we have to get rid of it. Our problem becomes the tiger. And the tiger causes us stress. Because we're in danger.

It's stress on a very subtle level. But over a prolonged period of time this stress will accumulate and it will ultimately stand in the way of true change.

Most of the time we're just standing in our own way by wanting to get rid of something.

So to say it with the words of Ajahn: Stop curing, let it go, and just care.

Edit: forgot to say that by just caring for the body and mind, change likely happens automatically.

How long does it take to see results?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 03:39 PM PDT

Hello! I'm super new on Yoga. I started Yoga due to flexibility problems now that a lot of apps are free during COVID times. I always had a problem with flexibility. For example, I can't lay down and get my leg up and have it straight. Not even close. It always bend and if I try to stretch it it hurts like hell and, sometimes, I get hickeys on my knees because of it. I've been doing yoga everyday. I did 10 sessions, all of them between 20 and 30 minutes, and all the sessions focus on flexibility. I do feel sore during and after the sessions, but, honestly, I don't feel any different. Of course I know things take time, but I thought my body would stop hurting after a few times. It's been almost 2 weeks since I started it and the pain doesn't leave my knees and tights. Is this normal? And how long will it take for me to see some results? Thank you :)

How do I stop ego, ambition, and attachment to asana from ruining my practice?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:59 AM PDT

Hi all, I've been doing Yoga for about 6 months now and I'm very grateful for having stumbled upon something like this. It's an absolute joy and blessing everytime I step onto the mat.

However, a big thing that's been hindering me is my own ego. Often times I'll treat Yoga like a sport, I'll push myself, I'll set progression in asanas as a goal and pursuit.

I think to myself, "I gotta do this and that so I can become better, so I can learn to attain this asana". I don't really compete with others I could care less about others lol, but it's like I'm obsessed with competing with my own self.

This has kinda been stripping the joy and beauty from the practice. I originally started Yoga because I wanted to become more free, peaceful, healthy, and alleviate the tightness and aches from my body so that I may be able to focus on important things in life.

I come from a lifting, martial arts, and sporting background. I got sick and tired of my tendency to become obsessed, competitive, and attached to various elements within those activities and the cultures which center around those activities. But I'm carrying the same mindset over to yoga.

Just like everything else, I become attached and almost obsessed with goals, progress, and "becoming better", by almost any means necessary. Just right now, I'm nursing sore hamstrings for what's been like a week because I keep pushing myself in forward bends.

Does anyone have any advice for this? How can I use Yoga to become more free and happy? How do I stop obsessing over goals, asanas, and approaching Yoga as though its a sport of some kind?

Every day stretches for seated forward fold

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 09:29 AM PDT

I'm a regular yogi and decently flexible however, I've never been able to do a seated forward fold without rounding out my back; it's even uncomfortable for me to just sit at a 90 degree angle with my legs out. What are some everyday stretches I can do with my hamstrings/hips to improve this?

    Tips for boat pose?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:56 PM PDT

More specifically, when going into a lower/half boat pose / coming back up. When I lower myself, my back seems to reflexively come down all at once, and when coming back up, I find it a bit hard not to hurt my tailbone. Thank you !!
