Knee injuries - 4 months later

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:01 AM PDT

I injured my knees in Ashtanga. I started in January of this year and by May had progressed to half primary with full finishing. My hips are tight, one hip much more so than the other. I was doing everything I could to work on my hips: daily practice, always sitting sukasana on the floor or ground, never on furniture anymore, extra stretches, etc.

Nevertheless I was having some discomfort in half lotus. I was told to protect the knees but I did not understand what could and would happen. I did not have deep knowledge of yoga before starting with my ashtanga teacher.

I tried to continue to practice, working with my teacher to modify, but I had made my knees so unstable that they hurt in almost every pose, and finally got to the point where they just hurt all the time without me doing anything. With much regret I had to stop practicing. I hope to one day return when my knees heal.

Meanwhile, I've been doing physical therapy to strengthen all the muscles to support my knees (quads, glutes, core, etc). I've gained a lot of strength, balance, coordination, and stability. But my knees still hurt. I love to hike, run, and bike. I have tried easing back into these activities slowly, with mixed success.

Has anyone ever spent 5 months (or an extended period of time) ruining their knees with half lotus and lotus (I only did lotus in utplutihi and it wasn't a pretty one) and now they are totally fine? I need to know there is hope and I haven't destroyed my knees forever.

Incidentally, I also hurt my shoulder from binds (hyoermobile shoulder), and was told by my PT to avoid internal rotation. Doing PT for that as well to stabilize the joint. Binds will likely never be for me. If anyone has experience with recovery from this also please let me know.

I tried looking this up, there's a lot out there about preventing pain and injury but nothing I can find about recovery. Sad to say I had to learn the hard way.

Edit to say: I can not sit sukasana without pain, can't cross my legs at the knee or ankle while seated in a chair or even on the floor without pain.

Has anyone here practiced / is practicing nerve purification (nadi shodhana) as described by swami vivekananda in raja yoga?
