    Story Time

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 01:00 PM PDT

So I would like to preface this by saying this is kind of disgusting but relevant to this sub.

I was zip zap boopity bopping on my way doing my daily yoga session. I was doing abs on my deck when all of a sudden my ass cheek gets bit... or at least I thought. Turns out a giant piece of splinter wood impaled my ass cheek. My yoga session was completely ruined by the tyrannical deck. I do not own a yoga mat hence why this happened to me.
I would also like to state this piece of wood is now lodged in my ass. It won't come out. With the coronavirus going on I can't go to the emergency room. Rule #1 I'm an idiot.

Please don't ban me. Just thought this was a funny story some people might enjoy.

Can yoga be done by someone with bone issues?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:40 PM PDT

Some say it's actually recommended. Some say no. I had a spine surgery and my recovery is slow but steady. Can I still try to learn at least a basic slow yoga? Will it help me get back some of my flexibility? Thank you

Do your legs ever stop burning?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:52 PM PDT

When I'm in any warrior or lunge pose my front facing thigh burns sooooo much. I get that it means I'm using my muscles and they're engaged, but will it get any better the more I practice? Thanks!

    Yoga and strength training

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:34 PM PDT

I'd like to gain muscle strength and tone up. I find it hard to be able to dedicate enough time to my practice as well as a lifting routine. I feel like it has to be one or the other or one has to suffer. I like to dedicate an hour to yoga daily.

Please tell me your advice and how you go about your yoga and strengthening!

    Struggling to establish home practice...

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:08 PM PDT

First of all, I'm so proud of all of you who are posting about how shelter-in-place has provided an opportunity to discover yoga as a new hobby, a new passion, a new way to move your body. That's truly amazing <3

However, I've never liked practicing at home. I've always relied on the ritual of going to the studio, getting wrapped up in the energy of other people and feeling temporarily separate from the rest of the world. Videos online have never replicated that for me; more often than not, I never even get fully in the right headspace, get distracted halfway through and stop. I just really have a hard time getting there mentally without the right physical environment too. I've thought about doing some of the live streams that the studios I go to have been doing, but I don't know, I'm worried it wouldn't be better enough than a free online video (while still costing as much as a regular IRL class).

It doesn't help that I struggle to find an appropriate place to practice, too. I have a two-bedroom apartment in the city; it's not small, but all the spaces already have dedicated functions, you know? I always end up kicking something, having to move my mat halfway through, I never feel like I can see my screen well enough, and of course my cat always wants to get involved.

Is anyone else struggling with the same things? Have you found any ways around them, are you just powering through, or are you trying other forms of exercise instead?

    Beginner Decathlon mat

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 05:07 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I recently got into yoga and am already loving it, so I decided to go ahead and buy a mat. However, my budget is extremely tight and I would like a mat that I can also use for fitness, as I like to do some cardio, weight training, pilates, etc as well as yoga.

So I ordered this mat: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/gentle-yoga-mat-8-mm-id_8525491.html. However, it's both 8mm and made from PVC, two things which I've already realized are frowned upon around here... What do you think? Is the thickness still okay to do yoga (I do often get knee and wrist pain working out now without any mat)? And is PVC really as bad as they say?

New to yoga and confused about breathing.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:26 AM PDT

Why does it seem like certain positions and movements change from an exhale to an inhale and vice versa, even though you're activating the same muscles? Let me explain.

For example. Doing a standing back arch bend while cactusing your arms is an exhale, but doing a back arch bend on your stomach is an inhale (I don't know the real names of these positions). It's the same movement, so why are they opposite breaths? This makes me confused for all positions. Am I inhaling or exhaling in to the stretch?

Alo vs Lifeforme vs Hugger Mugger Para Rubber?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 04:49 PM PDT

I'm relatively new to yoga (less than a year) and finally decided to get a real mat, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I got a [Lifeforme knock-off](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VXD4YYF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) on Amazon, but it soaked up the oil from my (clean) forehead so easily I've been afraid to use it again. I don't know how similar it is to real Lifeforme or Alo - do those have the same issue? It seems like Hugger Mugger wouldn't but I haven't seen as much about that one online.

I'm just looking for a mat that's decently heavy, has good grip, that won't look gross with oil stains from my skin. I don't want to have to do more than wipe it down with a cloth and some cleaning stuff to clean it (I used Meyer's Clean Day spray on my old one). Any recommendations?
