The importance of faith for the practice

Faith, śraddhā, is mentioned as a requisite in the pursuit of samādhi but once in the sutras. Yet, for our āsana practice, we are often asked to mount a good deal of faith: "practice, and all is coming". Likewise, we place a good deal of faith into our teachers, we "surrender to the guru", as it were. What is the role of faith, how important is it, how far must it go, can it go too far?

Every time I listen to an interview with him I am interested and impressed. Has anyone ever taken classes with him (online or in person)? He's not really an ashtangi though he has experience with it in the past (likewise Iyengar), but his focus on the breath and breathing seems to make it a natural companion.
