| Teaching what you practice...or not? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:08 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'm new to the group and enjoying all the content here. I would love to get some perspective on a personal dilemma regarding practicing Ashtanga but teaching another yoga style. I'm a well-established Vinyasa practitioner and teacher of many years with a fairly advanced asana practice. I teach group classes, private sessions, and kids yoga. During the pandemic, however, I have transitioned to practicing exclusively Primary. I had flirted around with Ashtanga in the past, and loved it, but there are not any shalas nearby. The experience this past year has changed me, allowing me to observe and explore the more subtle aspects of the practice at play. The fixed sequence feels like a blank canvas to me, with every day a new color arising!! My newfound passion for Ashtanga has me feeling hesitant about returning to teaching group classes in the Vinyasa style. Teaching is something very dear to me, and that has been with me in one form or another my whole life. My question is around the ethics of teaching what you practice. I believe strongly that a teacher should teach from a wealth of experience and study occuring over many years, even decades. Obviously I would begin at the beginning again. I feel this transition pulling me into the unknown. I am still homebound, but once I am vaccinated I have dreams of driving to the nearest shala maybe once a month to study in person... The thought of that really lights me up! My only hesitation is that I have missed being part of my yoga community here for the last year. Perhaps that is already lost. I would be so curious to hear about other Yogis who have found this path later in their journey and how it changed things. Thanks for reading ❤️ . [link] [comments] |
