Posted: 29 Mar 2021 11:29 PM PDT I had taken a long break from Yoga due to depression, made worse by knee injury. I started doing about 30 mins of Vinayasa flow 2 weeks back and was constantly frustrated. I was attempting to do intermediate level poses with extra variations and getting exhausted in 15mins with pain. It basically took me 2 weeks to realize, that I can in fact do easy poses and beginner level stretches. It simply didn't click in my head for 2 weeks that I need to warm up and gradually increase the type of poses. I kept beating myself up for 2 weeks for not being able to do well, realizing today, that I just needed to readjust the bar and slowly raising it again. Peace! Edit1: I completely agree that there are no "beginner" level poses and you can always keep on just improving your flexibility and strength. I said beginner, not to discount their importance, but just to classify them as the amount of strength and muscle groups used vs intermediate vs advanced. For eg: Whether we put our "knee down" or not in some poses, or whether we choose to take a chaturanga in transition vs child's pose... etc. And thanks for the awards my fellow yogis! I'm so glad so many of us enjoy this practice and are so passionate about it. [link] [comments] |

Any yoga poses where I don’t really use my back and back of my legs above the knee? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:46 PM PDT Hopefully that makes sense. Recently I had a pretty serious fall down the stairs, which made me really upset because I just started practicing yoga like 3 days before that happened and experienced an emotional release, which I didn't know existed. I feel like that was an insanely cruel joke from the universe. Now I feel like I can never get that again because even just standing still for like 2 minutes causes a pain in my lower back and back of my legs above the knee. I obviously should see a doctor and I'm not looking for medical advice, but I was so excited and even bought a quality yoga Matt before I slipped and it just came. I don't want it to go to waste, so if you have any suggestions on yoga poses or videos that would make me a bit happier. Have a good night, or day! [link] [comments] |
Working on thoracic spine flexibility – pointers? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:04 AM PDT Hi all! I have been slowly working on improving my thoracic spine flexibility over the last ~year, specifically working on opening and drawing the heart through and lengthening "upwards" from my low ribcage. I focus on drawing mula bandha upwards and strongly engaging my core in ustrasana (to protect my low back), for example, and will often use my thumbs on my lower ribcage to cue extension and lift in the thoracic spine and heart before working any kind of heart opening pose. However, I still feel like my thoracic spine stays "sticky" and the flexion moves to my lumbar spine instead (which is no good!). Has anyone focused on improving thoracic spine flexibility and extension? I'd love to hear folks' experiences and poses or cues you've found helpful! Cheers! [link] [comments] |

What has your yoga journey been like? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:23 PM PDT So I took a video of myself doing a flow the other day and quite honestly, I was really disappointed. I don't look nearly as good as I thought I did and my form can use some work. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a pick me up lol. How long have you been practicing yoga? When did you start? And have you improved over time? I've seen in so many places that the body just starts "degrading" at 30. Currently 26, I have carpal tunnel, my wrists will start hurting if I don't exercise, my elbows will start hurting if I don't exercise, my upper back gets stiff.... My knees weren't the best (I couldn't ice skate for long periods of time before) but I've started getting impromptu knee pain a few weeks ago (yoga has been a HUGE help to relieve it). Part of me is afraid that I've done a lot of damage by never moving around in my teenage years (so much regret on that account). [link] [comments] |
Should glutes be engaged in backbend? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:19 PM PDT Hi Everyone! It's been couple of months I am working on Ashtanga Yoga primary series. One topic always comes up when I read about backbend techniques- glutes. For a stable supported 10 breaths long backbend what's the role of glutes? If someone has open shoulder vs tight shoulder will this effect the activation of glutes at all? Can I have someone/experts/yoga teachers shed some light on it please? Thank you 🙏🏼 [link] [comments] |
I need a yoga routine where my head does not dip below my heart repeatedly. Is this possible? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:13 AM PDT I am newly disabled thanks to incredibly painful nerve damage in my face. I used to do yoga 2-3 times a week and the practice was so good for me physically and emotionally. However, since this injury I haven't attempted yoga because even bending over to touch my toes increases my pain, and every yoga routine I've done and seen includes poses like downward dog and child's pose, which can even trigger the pain to increase. If no entire routines can be suggested to me, maybe y'all have some suggestions for individual poses and then I can sit down and chart out a flow between them? TIA! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:37 AM PDT My yogic journey has led me down a path of trying to discover all things related to wellness in order to achieve my optimum level of self-expression. Asana has helped me to experientially understand that stiffness, 'dormant channels', and any disease in the body 100% hinders our ability to express ourselves as beautifully, lovingly and spontaneously as we could if we were healthier, lighter and 'more open' in the body, allowing for prana (literally, "life energy") to flow more easily and in more abundance. It has significantly deepened my awareness of the importance of the breath and how it affects my self-expression and how grounded I feel in any moment. It has put me more in touch with my sexual energy, so now I am more sensitive to how overindulgence affects my spirit, my energy levels, and my self-expression [as a male]. I have a healthier relationship with food and am much more aware of how overeating and processed foods affect my self-expression. I'm really beyond grateful to have been led to this path of natural wellness because it has enriched my life so much. There have been a few times where I've experienced immense, spontaneous gratitude for being able to take refuge in a body-mind that is so grounded and free at the same time. Many people, mostly my coworkers at various jobs, have told me that I'm an inspiration for them to take better care of themselves and this always brings on the good feels. I've never been in better shape and I've never been prouder of who 'I' am and how this body-mind expresses itself. I've thought about how so many people have likely gone their entire lives without full knowledge as to how much they can naturally and consciously affect their physiology and their self-expression — for free — and I think it's unfortunate. I can easily see myself becoming a certified yoga teacher at some point in the future and hosting yoga classes while I travel. I imagine it will be very fulfilling for me to see 10 -15 souls leave their yoga mats while knowing that all of those people are now [more than likely] better versions of themselves, going out into the world and creating less suffering for themselves and others. With that said I'm interested in hearing about you all's yogic journeys, what paths of discovery it led you down, how it positively affected your life, etc. I also want to mention that I engage in a fair amount of other 'positive' and 'holistic' practices in conjunction with yoga, so my 'transformative' experience is more a culmination of taking better care of my overall health in general, but yoga I feel has been a pivotal piece to the puzzle. An in depth guide to Kundalini Posted: 30 Mar 2021 11:51 AM PDT Hello there, I'm looking to start Kundalini yoga with no experience with the goal of achieving the described enlightened hallucinatory state. Anyone have good references for premier guides? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Anyone follow Jade Alectra? Seemingly promoting a cult now. Posted: 29 Mar 2021 09:23 PM PDT Hey, Just wanted to see if anyone else has noticed Jade Alectra's recent instagram activity. She's gone and joined Bentinho Mossaro and is now promoting him on Instagram. This "guru" believes he's god (claims he can change the weather, move things with his mind), has sex with students, normalizes abuse and suicide in his talks. Someone killed themself in the middle of one of his retreats (which are held in luxury resorts, surprise surprise). There's a couple short docs available on YouTube. If you check out her AMAs, she's really defensive and addresses some people's concerns over this. I commented on something she posted on his Instagram and was immediately blocked. Thoughts? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:46 AM PDT I have recently found a technique called Kechari Mudra and I was wondering if anyone else has tried it or knows more information about it. i would also like to know if it stretches your tongue and by how much it stretches [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Mar 2021 04:58 AM PDT I have been teaching for about 6months and started to realise that I was paid less than other instructors who joined at the same time and signed a contract for longer than they were asked as well. (2 years and we are paid by numbers of students attending) My classes are not always full and to be honest I am starting to lose motivation to teach. Like seeing students achieve and grow and leave looking relaxed makes me feel good but then when im invoicing the studio it just feels abit depressing that I'm earning so little. I feel like talking to the studio owner but I'm not sure how to talk about it. Any help? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Yoga mat similar to Banyan & Bo Ultra Support? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:18 AM PDT Hello! My dog peed on my mom's yoga mat. My mom had been using the same one for quite a few years now, she was very happy with it and very sad she could not get the smell out of the mat. I ordered a new one for her already but is not the same as to the one she lost. I would love if I could get the same one back for her or at least one that dupes it. This is the one she had: Gaiam Banyan & Bo Ultra Support I don't see this type of mat in stock anywhere anymore, hence why I am looking for recommendations for a dupe. She said she liked it because it resembled the Manduka mat, but she couldn't tell me which from that brand would be the correct one. Appreciate your help! [link] [comments] |
