    Frustrated.

Background info: been practicing Ashtanga Primary Series for nearly 4 years, and I've been a home practitioner for about half that time.

I'm a little sensitive about sharing my personal frustration towards my practice because I realize it sounds immature and goal-oriented, which is kind of... not the point of this practice? But I figured if there's anyone that can understand, it's this subreddit.

To start off, I love everything about Ashtanga. The commitment it demands, the moving meditation, and the joy it brought to my life. In fact, I'm a little obsessive about it, which is why I think I've become so deeply frustrated.

Lately, while struggling with increased anxiety and depression, I'm getting angry during practice, and feeling frustrated at myself not moving forward, and not getting anymore proficient at Supta Kurmasana.

I realize this defeats the purpose, but being stuck at Primary Series for this long makes me feel in some ways... incompetent? Or just unlucky - I wasn't born with the anatomy that allows me to easily get into the full expression of Supta Kurmasana with both legs behind the head.

No matter how much work I put into it (yin for the hips every day, holding for 25 breaths during the actual practice, strengthening exercises outside practice) I don't see progress, and not having a teacher makes me want to give up. Primary series is starting to feel like a chore. I can stand up from drop backs, I have the endurance and the stamina to get through a full primary series, but my hip flexibility has me stuck.

I think I could use a little advice from more experienced practitioners that have been through the same feelings. Will this ever pass?

    Individual pose practice

    Posted: 20 May 2020 11:50 AM PDT

Hello Everyone I've just started my ashtanga journey having taken other hot yoga classes a while back.

I have a question I wondered if anyone could help with... Currently my practice consists of Surya Namaskara A for 5 rounds and B for 2 rounds as I'm still getting comfy in downdog.

My question is this do you practice individual poses outside your main flow? Those that are new or you find difficult? Or do you add them in as you progress and develop the skills just in the set sequence?
