Yoga: [COMP] I've been using the wall to practice handstand for YEARS. Yesterday I tried it at the foot of the bed instead, which really eliminated the fear of falling. After many easy falls, this happened! I hope it's cool that I share this slice of accomplishment. I'm open to feedback!

I found out yesterday that I am now strong enough to do the side crow. I couldn’t have come close to this months ago, so I’m happy despite it being wobbly and less than graceful. CC welcome

    Seated forward fold, help

    Posted: 20 May 2020 03:50 PM PDT

I have been doing yoga for about 2 months now and i can do some poses better then others and i feel i am flexible in some ways. But seated forward fold its so bad for me, i barley move forward when my back is straight. Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend is even worse 😞 Any tips how to get better at this, which poses help me get this flexibility? Thank you!

Starting Ashtanga and feeling humbled/discouraged. Any tips?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I've been practicing yoga casually for about six years. By casually, I mean I've had memberships to local studios and taken classes (mostly vinyasa, sometimes yin) 2-3x/week, with the occasional Yoga With Adriene video at home here and there. There are times when I've been more active and times when I've gotten more into other activities and taken a break.

Anyway, with all this quarantine stuff, I've been craving some consistency and discipline in my physical body. Both community studios I've been members of happen to be Ashtanga-based (as in, the studio founders were hardcore Ashtangis and opened their own more general practice yoga studios). My current studio opened a dedicated Ashtanga shala right before lockdown, and I was really interested in joining, and plan on doing so when things open back up. In the meantime, I've been reading about Ashtanga, learning more about the practice, and trying to absorb everything I can.

I just started YogaGlo and have been taking an Intro to Ashtanga/Ashtanga 101 program taught by Mary Taylor and Richard Freeman. I'm on Day 3 of a 5-day program. I absolutely love them as teachers and am learning a lot, but it's been REALLY discouraging to see how little I actually am capable of doing once I actually clue in to the proper alignment. The focus of the classes is very detailed and almost agonizingly slow - we're talking twenty minutes on how to properly externally rotate your shoulders to lift them over your head IN THE VERY FIRST BREATH. It's wonderful, but oh my god, I am realizing how haphazard my practice has been and how overconfident I was.

Like, all this time, I thought I was a whiz at really basic poses that were easy for me, like triangle and even downward dog, but - I'M NOT. I'm stiff and wonky and unbalanced, I hyperextend and lock my joints and forget to breathe. I have quite possibly never done a forward fold the right way, and now realize that I almost always round my spine to "get deeper." And it turns out I really do need to use blocks and straps to do some pretty foundational poses properly.

The really slow and detailed exploration of sun salutations has been incredibly humbling for me. I feel like I'm starting from square one. It's a bit discouraging. And I guess following the Ashtanga tradition, this is essentially where I should stay for a while. But, UGH. Any tips or encouragement on riding out this feeling?

I injured my knee two months ago, and I’m really struggling with not being able to do yoga. Anyone have any words of encouragement, or stories of overcome injuries they can share?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 03:19 PM PDT

I was really excited about making and meeting new goals while stuck in the house, but then I sprained my LCL. I miss it so much, and I've already lost so much muscle mass. I had recently met some new goals, and I feel certain I won't be able to do those same poses anymore.

Anyone out there recovered from an injury and been able to jump back in easily?

Alomoves experience & favorite yoga equipment - please share!

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:47 PM PDT

Hello! With the quarantine in place I decided it was time to start on my home practice.

I had a free month of alomoves trial and started about a week ago and I must say that I've been loving it!! I was previously doing free videos on youtube prior to alomoves. The instructors are so knowledgeable, I love how I can search by series and yoga type. I'm now doing a lot more restorative yoga at home and it feels so good~ Does anyone have experience with Alomoves too? Please share them with me as I'm deciding whether to get a membership after my trial ends!

I'm also thinking of getting a Lululemon reversible 5mm mat. I currently have a manduka Pro mat (long) and I've been loving it for the durability and cushioning, but it does get a bit slippery when my hands start to sweat (due to the closed cell surface) and I'm thinking of getting a mat with open cell surface.

I'm also thinking of getting a yoga bolster for restorative yoga.

What are some of your favorite yoga mats or bolsters?

    Thank you for sharing!! :)

    What's your weekly exercise/workout routine?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 10:23 AM PDT

Hello! I recently got into yoga again, after dropping it for over two years. I used to go to the gym or did YouTube HIIT workouts, but I stopped because the quarantine shut down all gyms. Quarantine was really tough on me mentally, to the point where I would have no energy to do anything. I picked up yoga because it was easier to do then HIIT workouts, and I have fallen in love all over again. For about a month now, I have been practicing yoga through YouTube for 30 minutes-1 hour 5-6 days a week and I already see such a huge improvement in my mood, my health and my general wellbeing.

I was just wondering what your weekly exercise/workout routines are. HIIT workouts/home strength workouts are so boring and repetitive for me, and I really miss going to the gym. The parks in my area are going to open soon, so I'm hoping I can go hiking soon. I've only been doing yoga this month, but I'm wondering if that's enough for exercise.

    Celebrating a tiny milestone

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:21 AM PDT

A teeny tiny milestone but it made me happy!

I was working on head to knee, and usually I land just past mid calf and can then stretch to about 4 inches away from my ankle by working on a mini flow.

Today I landed at my usual "stretch" spot and made it all the way to reaching my ankle.

I've been told I'm likely working from home til September - which is great news for me as my commute time was replaced by yoga time so I get to keep this new lil routine a bit longer!

    Dual actions?!?
