    YOGA SAVED MY LIFE!!!!

    Posted: 27 May 2020 09:57 AM PDT

I had been wanting to try Yoga for a few months before my friend finally convinced me to just do it. She let me use a spare mat and started up a YouTube video of Yoga with Adriene. We did her 30 Days of Yoga Challenge Day 1 video. By the end of the video, I was hooked. After 6 days of daily Yoga, my friend backed out of the challenge, but I kept going. Since then I have been practicing Yoga almost daily for 21 months now.

Yoga truly has changed my life. Before Yoga I was angry. I was wanting to better myself but didn't know how to do so. I wanted to find inner peace and happiness but was struggling to find ways of accomplishing this. My childhood was an absolute nightmare. I dealt with abuse, including bullying at home and school, and I spent most of my 20's trying to find a way out of my depression. I turned to marijuana and friends regularly, running anywhere and everywhere that would distract me from my own thoughts. It wasn't until I began my regular Yoga practice that I learned to be in my own thoughts; with myself, by myself; and be comfortable in my own skin. I began to crave this time to myself.

With Yoga I learned to trust my inner voice and to trust that the Universe will support me. I began to think more positively and gained incredible confidence as my body, mind, and spirit changed. After these two years of my daily dedication to Yoga, I can finally say that I am happy and grateful to be alive. I can finally thank my parents for bringing me into this world. It may have taken me until the age of 29 to find the catalyst to changing my life for the positive, but I am here now, and I will never look back.

Yoga has provided many opportunities, including finally finding my voice and my own way of helping others, which I have been seeking for years. I now own my own business, Yoga with Mikenze, and am also branching out into Social Media Management for other companies. Two years ago, I would have never guessed that this is where I would end up! I believe wholly this is the Magic of Yoga, and that Yoga truly saved my life!

[COMP] I’m still very much a beginner (started practicing at the start of quarantine) but I just got in to a headstand without using the wall at all! I’m so surprised, I could barely balance my knees on my elbows a few weeks ago

Yogaworks is still billing you while shut down

    Posted: 27 May 2020 06:44 AM PDT

Just a heads up. It's awesome to support your local Mom and Mom yoga studio during the pandemic, but Yogaworks is a nationwide chain and 100% owned by a private equity firm out of Boston. Just found out they've been billing full price for three months.

I'm able to reach behind my back without pain!

    Posted: 27 May 2020 06:44 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I've been doing yoga sparingly for a couple years but really buckled down during quarantine and started a daily practice with down dog and virtual classes from a local studio (shout out to The Studio Cleveland) at least an hour a day.

I came into this incredibly inflexible (mainly embarrassingly tight hammies and a weak back) and with an old shoulder injury that never received proper therapy, so I have not been able to reach behind my back without substantial pain for about 8 years. Well, yesterday I wasn't even thinking about it and I was able to reach behind my back and grab a pillow without twisting and without ANY pain. It took a second to realize what had just happened, but when I did I was ecstatic.

I know it doesn't sound like much, but I have been held back very much by this for years and it's extremely freeing to have that mobility.

Just wanted to share, it really is amazing how progress sneaks up on you!

About to finish Adriennes 30 day challenge, what now?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 03:22 PM PDT

I'm coming up on day 27 and it occurred to me, this is almost over haha. Where should I go once it's done? I really want to keep daily practice but really like the guidance especially since I've never done yoga before.

    Thanks! :)

    Couple of questions

    Posted: 27 May 2020 05:44 PM PDT

Okay so how often are you supposed to do yoga? Is it like running or weight training where you're likely to injure yourself if you do it everyday? Also does anybody have any suggestions for a yoga routine on youtube that is suitable for a pretty unflexable complete beginner? I'm struggling to find something that doesn't make me think i'm gonna hurt myself

    Sustainable Yoga Attire

    Posted: 27 May 2020 03:44 PM PDT

    Hi Yogis!

My yoga pants and capris that I've had for years are starting to wear down and I am in the market for some new ones. I tried searching the sub, so I apologize if this has been posted before. Regardless, there might be some new businesses I'm not aware of so figured I would ask anyway!

I like Alo and Beyond Yoga, however I find that with Beyond I have to keep pulling them up. And those come with a nice price tag.

I'm looking for brands that pass the bend-over-test, durable, reasonably priced, sustainable and bonus if they use recycled materials/give back to the community. Any recommendations you have to share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! <3

Recommendation for advanced virtual yoga flows and classes

    Posted: 27 May 2020 05:37 PM PDT

Hey there! I'm hoping to find recommendations for advanced/difficult vinyasa or similar flows I can find online and do in my living room. I really want to finish the classes sweating, and everything I've found so far is too slow paced. I also enjoy when teachers run through a flow once or twice and let you take it through yourself for a few rounds afterwards. Also, classes with a killer sound track I find enjoyable as well.

[COMP] Not really a pose, but this reverse-butterfly thing feels amazing on my hips/lower back. That said, it looks like I fell out a window and I’m aware it might not be the best thing to do for my back or knees. Is that reason to stop?

2 months inversion progress! Today I was finally able to consistently hold a staggered leg handstand. The final piece to my inversion collection and I’m so happy

    Yoga with Hyperhidrosis

    Posted: 27 May 2020 01:58 PM PDT

    Hey Guys,

I am new to this community and also new to Yoga :) It is nice to meet you :D For a month now I am practicing Yoga, but my Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) on palms and feet are making it really hard for me... I have this condition since I was 5 (20 now) and unfortunately it is incurable. Only the symptoms can be reduced a bit, by for example taking medication, which I do. Still, I am slipping very often and I sometimes feel very uncomfortable during the sessions. My Yoga mat is made out of cork (I hoped it would help) and I am even wearing socks, but I am still slipping very badly, especially when I am doing poses that include my hands.

It is very fun to do Yoga and I am really enjoying it, but I hope maybe someone could give me a tip that might help me dealing with it :D

PS: Sorry, if my english does not make any sense... I am not a native speaker ;)

suggestions for videos/poses for starting office job

    Posted: 27 May 2020 09:39 AM PDT

I intermittently do Yoga With Adrienne at home. I have scoliosis and other back issues. I just started a desk job and I'm finding I'm having hard time adjusting to this. I often feel like I'm uncomfortable or in pain throughout the day. Any suggestion/resources for this?

    Hitting the wall

    Posted: 27 May 2020 10:10 AM PDT

I've been practicing yoga for 2 years now consistenly in a studio for about 2/3 times a week. When i was first starting i was very stiff, bad back and posture with lots of problem areas. I stayed disciplined and made significant progress which my yoga teacher complimented me on and i was very happy with myself.

During quarantine i started practicing every other day on my own as the studio was closed, trying to work on my weakest areas (hip and hamstring flexibility). Before starting this, i've developed an uncomfortable tingling sensation in my left calf while doing downward dog for example but i ignored it since it went away after the exercise.

Turns out i may have a problem with sciatica because regular hamstring stretches lead me to spending a day with pain in my lower back and hip so that i could barely walk and sit (i'm only 22 ). After that i stopped working my hamstrings and did lots of hip openers/ torsions and such and stopped having these issues completely.

The problem now is that my hamstring flexibility is still poor (partly due to genetics) and it's affecting all my poses that require hamstring flexibility- which as you know is a lot of poses... Now i feel like i can't progress further because i'm very hesitant to do hamstring stretches fearing i will hurt myself again. Has anyone encountered anything similar? And how did you go around it?

Any tips on dealing with the awkwardness of *small* classes?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 01:10 PM PDT

So since the lockdown a couple of my instructors have switched to Zoom classes for obvious reasons. One's pretty close to normal studio numbers (~25-50 people) but she has been forging a following for years now. The other was only teaching in the studio and her online presence is very new so the classes have been smaller. Now I don't mind it if it's several people, but in two of the classes one time there was only one other student there and in the other it was just me.

Thankfully since it was one on one we got to do a more personal class (I'm one of the more intermediate students) and I got to push myself harder, but I kind of dread the thought of just being one of the few students. It has nothing to do with this instructor in particular but personality wise I just like being in part of a small group and it's kind of deterring me from attending more of her classes (and I fear other students might feel the same so it's a catch-22 situation).

    Hot hot HOT

    Posted: 27 May 2020 03:23 AM PDT

Hey guys! Do you change your practice at all during a heatwave? Do you experience challenges when dealing with heat? I've been practicing for some while but never at home, so now I feel like I am melting. 😅 I got 35 minutes into my power flow today, collapsed in my side plank and gave up even after dousing myself in cold water. Also, if I'm too hot lately I can't do more advanced poses because my strength disappears in the heat. So sad! Any thoughts? I'm thinking to create my own routine.

What exactly does "chin to chest" mean?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 04:04 AM PDT

I've heard this in real life classes and also online classes, and although I think I know what it means could someone describe it in detail just so I get a better understanding?
