Welcome to Form Check Friday! Here is the link to all previous Form Check Fridays

Please post a photo or video of the stretch you'd like to be critiqued. Do include any specific questions you have about your form.

Your video or photo should be:

    • Oriented the correct way, we want to see the lines of your body
    • Be formatted such that there isn't unnecessary video of you preparing for the move (keep it short)
    • Have the important bits of the movement clearly visible (multiple angles is always useful)
    • Include the whole body

    Rules for critiquing form

    • Constructive criticism only
    • Feel free to point others to resources that address their form and/or questions if you aren't "qualified" to give them advice yourself

If your form is awesome, consider posting it in the Show Off Sunday thread!

FINALLY wanting to be committed to getting the splits

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 04:47 PM PDT

Hello flexible Redditors, here is someone who's a rock and wants to become flexible. I have wanted to get my splits down for YEARS but I have never stayed committed. I want to get them down for once, I want to get to feel that experience, I want to be proud of myself.

Right now it's night but starting from tomorrow I'll do my best to stretch every day. I will post updates here to help me stay committed if that's allowed by the mods!

Lower back, side-bends, and twists in Starting to Stretch?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 04:06 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm (21M) using Starting to Stretch on rest days as part of my fitness routine, and this might be a stupid question, but are any of the exercises meant to work on your lower back or your ability to side-bend or twist?

My sitting posture is pretty bad and bends/twists seem to give me the most relief (i.e. spine clicks haha) so I'd assume more of those would be good for me but tbf I don't really know what I'm talking about.

    Total Body Yoga Deep Stretch

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 07:20 PM PDT

Been working on my splits for over a year. My hips and hamstrings are incredibly tight usually. I know I need to square my hips more but any tips? I feel kind of stuck here.

I'm looking to start yoga next month. (August) is there anything I should know? Anything you wish you knew if you already do yoga?

    Thanks!

What is the exact mechanism going on with your muscles when increasing flexibility?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 02:37 PM PDT

I read from Relax into Stretch by Pavel Tsatsouline that our muscles are already capable of being very flexible but we're held back due to our Central Nervous System sending messages to our muscles and forcing them to contract. Over time these signals are diminished once our CNS realizes that the stretch is a safe position.

But then I also read and asked physical therapists what's going on and they said that every time you stretch you cause microtears in your muscle and when it recovers it lengthens slightly. Repeating this process over time lengthens the muscle.

    So which is it?

I’m close to being able to do side splits. Will this stretch help me with that?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:41 AM PDT

When I lay down, my legs are relaxed only when I have my legs spreaded (frog like)

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 12:27 PM PDT

If I have my legs straight, it feels uncomfortable, could anyone help me knowing why?

    Thanks!

    Starting out with flexibility

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 03:59 PM PDT

So I've just starting teaching myself pole dancing at home and obviously would like to be as flexible as possible. At the moment after working on the pole I do some split flexibility and I'm making really good progress both sides. I've always been able to put palms to floor when bending over and had something that resembled a split one side but I'm surprised how quickly it's getting there. I want to work on my back also but would it be too much to do back flexibility training at the same time? An example of how lacking in bendiness my spine is..I cannot do a bridge with arms over head pushing up, it really hurts my wrists and arms..another noticeably weak area that needs particular attention with regards to pole! In short should I wait till I've mastered the basic split, then go onto side split stretches then to spine and so on, or do abit of each everyday? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    Trouble with hip mobility

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:09 AM PDT

Ive made great progress with my side splits and leg flexibility in general, but j always feel like I'm not getting anywhere with my hips/middle split. When I stretch in the butterfly position and similar things it doesn't feel at all like it does with other stretching, it's like a sharp pain and it feels like something's gonna pop if I pushed too much. Is this the normal feeling? Should I judge keep up with regular hip stretches or is there any other advice someone could give me? Thanks in advance.
