Anyone else just randomly ‘strike a pose’ to release tension? Posted: 05 Jul 2020 12:56 PM PDT I'll be washing the dishes or having a chat with my husband or getting ready for the day ...and I'll just have a sudden urge to move my body, breathe, and stretch. People look at me weird sometimes but, it feels good so why not? What's wrong with down dog in the kitchen? Forward fold in the driveway? Headstands in the living room? All sounds great to me. I used to stretch in my chair in classes when I was in school. Teachers gave me weird looks. I was so uncomfortable sitting in those desks for so long. I crave movement often and love the lengthening release that stretching brings. I've noticed that when I am sedentary for too long my mood is negatively effected, my body aches more, and I'm more sluggish. Anyone else need to move often each day? [link] [comments]
Question about flexibility and touching my toes? Posted: 05 Jul 2020 05:18 PM PDT So, I'm a 17 year old female for context. My family has a genetic thing that comes with a ton of different systems; I know that I have a few but I don't know if natural flexibility is one that I inherited. So, I wanted to see if it was. I swim regularly (every other day) but I have not done land exercises in a year (don't judge me :b). I have never actually tried to stretch a lot, so I think that would be something I could try to see if I have the natural flexibility. I started 2 days ago, and I was only able to get my hands about 4 inches from my toes before I couldn't go any farther. (That was when I pushed myself even when it was uncomfortable). So, I stretched for about 15 min in the afternoon for 2 days, and now I am here. I can wrap my fingers around my toes and almost set my palms on the floor. (At this rate I should be able to in a few days) Is that the normal rate of progress in terms of stretching, or is it faster then normal? (I didn't hurt myself or anything in case anyone was worried.) [link] [comments]
| My arms are too weak for chaturanga! Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:35 AM PDT I can literally not do it, it's so frustrating! How can I get my arms to a point where they're strong enough to even get into that position? I've been doing yoga with the Down Dog App for a while now and I can handle most poses but not this one. | Yoga for knee pain and wrist pain? Posted: 05 Jul 2020 10:43 AM PDT My knee has been paining since an year now if I do anything strenuous, and for wrists they're paining due to drawing a lot. I do a lot of stretches for the wrist but if I draw for more than 20 minutes pain comes again [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:34 AM PDT I am not sure if this is allowed, but mods, this is yoga-related, I promise. To everyone who wears leggings (all genders included), I humbly need advice on which leggings are yoga-proof and/or squatproof. What are yoga proof leggings? My own term (others may have used it though) where doing ANY pose won't compromise my privates, or my underwear LOL. I once almost had the mishap of flashing everyone in my class my underwear because my leggings would turn sheer especially during plow pose. (Plow pose is the ultimate decider.) I know some might say why don't I just wear yoga shorts, but I just don't like shorts in yoga. My legs do sweat and whenever I need to hold my legs for any pose it's just all sweaty and I need to take a break to wipe myself down, but I personally prefer to be undisturbed by sweat in my own practice. Not to mention in some poses I also risk flashing my privates. Also, to the ladies, VPL is fine by me. I don't mind underwear line showing, but having it in full display in certain poses is a no-no. Yes, I know ideally people shoud mind their own practices in yoga, but I am personally more comfortable and feel much safer knowing that my bottoms keep it together. If I do yoga with more skin, I do that at home, but this is in the context of a studio or yoga in public [link] [comments]
Teacher In Training : Possibly Study Guide Resources Posted: 05 Jul 2020 10:20 AM PDT Hello, I'm starting my TT journey and we are using Peter Connolly's - 'A Student's Guide to the History of Philosophy of Yoga'. I'm quite new to reading text like this and was curious if anyone might know of a study guide for this book and/or just some general studying tips for yoga history and philosophy. Look forward to any suggestions, feedback or tips and tricks. Thank you and Namaste 🙏 [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jul 2020 05:46 PM PDT I want to incorporate more mindfulness into my yoga, as per the original eastern tradition. I've heard of the principles of Pratyahara and Dhyana but I'm unsure how exactly to incorporate them into my practice and emphasize the mind body connection. Any tips would be helpful, thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Jul 2020 08:47 AM PDT so i've just started doing yoga (literally in the past couple of days) because i wanted a hobby that i could stick to and also to feel healthier. before doing yoga, i was doing workouts to grow/tone my glutes and it worked a little bit, but i struggle with workouts because i find them painful. i understand yoga is great for the entire body, but i'm just wondering how effective it is for growing/toning glutes? i have somewhat of a flat bum and it's something i'm insecure about so i'd really like to change that through doing yoga if possible [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jul 2020 01:25 PM PDT I have been noticing some unusual anxiety if I drink coffee after my ashtanga practice. I feel a bit manic and ungrounded and it can last all day. Usually after a long savasana, I will drink a lot of water, eat a snack, and then grab a cup of coffee. On two recent occurrences, however, my anxiety went through the roof and I had the jitters with my mind racing. Strangely, if I drink coffee before my practice, I have no issues. In fact, it seems to help my practice. I have also noticed, whether or not I have coffee, if I do a short savasana I can get similar jitters and feelings of anxiety. Has anyone else experienced similar issues? [link] [comments]
| Foot cramp issues - any advice Posted: 05 Jul 2020 08:41 AM PDT I began practicing about a year ago and I still experience foot cramp issues. Usually once or twice every session. It occurs when the tops of my feet are pressed into the mat. The inside arch of my foot will cramp when I'm in table-top or child pose. Does anyone have any advice on what I could do to avoid this? | Teacher with disturbing opinions—what would you do? Posted: 05 Jul 2020 12:08 PM PDT So yesterday, a teacher I've been studying with for about a year posted a link to a speech by Louis Farrakhan to her Instagram page. If you don't know who he is, (1) lucky you, and (2) read about him on the SPLC site. Basically he's a corrosively anti-Semitic homophobic Black separatist conspiracy theorist. I'm kind of gobsmacked that my teacher would find anything about him to admire. The teacher is Black, I'm white, and my wife, who has also has classes with this teacher and who I'm fairly certain has nothing to do with secretly controlling the government, is Jewish. I feel that this has made it impossible for me to continue to take classes with this teacher. I hate to just do a fade, but I have no idea how I'd confront her on this. I mean, "Are you out of your freaking mind?" seems a good place to start, but I doubt it would lead to anything good. What do you all think? [link] [comments] |
Asana / Sadhana for my father? Posted: 05 Jul 2020 02:56 AM PDT My father has recently expressed an interest in meditation and yoga after some time of seeing how my practice has affected me. He is 67 years old. He has extremely bad lower back issues and hw is incredibly inflexible. He can't sit cross legged because his groin muscles are too tight. He can't do upward or downward dog either. Does anyone have any advice on how I can help him get started with some hatha yoga? I have been practicing Padmasana and Sirsa Setu Bandhasana primarily with some stretching before hand and it has corrected my entire bodies alignment in a way I didn't think possible. My meditation and pranayama practices have really been deepened as a result. So with my father it would be my wish for him to get similar kinds of benefits. I want to help him learn some asana's that can be the foundation for a full sadhana / spiritual path, not just stretches to help his flexibility. Any help is deeply appreciated. Much love [link] [comments]

Pain in outer knee - stretch recommendation Posted: 04 Jul 2020 11:35 PM PDT I have been doing yoga on and off for a year and been really focused for the past 3 months (only doing YWA) to focus on weigt loss. I have patellar luxation in my right knee so I am very careful with vinyasas. But I am experiencing pain on the outside of my right knee. Any stretches to combat that or any poses I should avoid to exacerbate the pain? Edit to add: I occasionally feel a deep pain in my left glute. It only lasts about 2 sec and started only this month. My hunch is it's sciatica. Should I just stop vinyasa - plank, downward dog, chattaranga? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Jul 2020 11:38 PM PDT I follow YWA for weight loss yoga - I am experiencing really random deep nerve pain in my glut - my hunch is that it's sciatica. It only lasts for 2 seconds and happens every other day so I am not worried. But what poses should I avoid to not trigger the sciatica? [link] [comments]
