Can I take breaks in between while doing pranayama or breathing exercises?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 08:23 PM PDT

Basically I'm an asthmatic. So, currently I am a beginner doing pranayama(especially anulom vilom). Since it should be done for 15 minutes everyday what I'm doing is taking a break for every 5 minutes since I have no patience for continuously sitting and doing for 15 minutes. Is that ok to take a break in between? And also by the way I am confused because I don't know from where to begin because there are many types of breathing exercises but all I know is anulom vilom so I started doing it. What ever I do I am doing it to reduce the frequency of asthma. In other words to totally diminish it if I could. Please suggest me other exercises with references also remedies or anything apart from exercises.

    Basic poses?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Is there a good chart or guide to some of the basic poses someone new to yoga should practice? I've been doing yoga using YouTube (yoga with Adrienne, among others) but would like to start creating my own flows. (Not sure if that's the right word) but I don't know many poses or things to work on. Google has been largely unhelpful. I may just not be looking in the right places.

    Thank you!

    Which muscles am I missing?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 06:22 AM PDT

I know this is a common question, but I do have a follow-up to it that I couldn't exactly find while searching this sub. Due to the lack of pulling exercises, which muscles are not getting worked out during yoga routines?

I do not own any weights, nor do I have access to a gym, but My sister bought me a set of resistance bands for my birthday, so I am able to add to my workout in order to get an all-around muscle workout - I am just unsure which sort of targeted workouts I should look for. Thank you, all.

    Yoga mat is shedding

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 11:06 AM PDT

Hi yogis! I've been practicing almost every day for a while now, and my mat is shedding everywhere. It's definitely worn down at the top and the bottom from where my hands and feet usually rest, and at the end of my practice, my back as well as my carpet are usually covered in little blue specs. Are there any mats you'd recommend that do not shed very easily?

As a bonus, any mats that are durable and are also made out of recycled materials? I've tried searching around, but I want the viewpoints of long-term mat use. Thank you! :]

Do you ever feel anxious when holding some asana?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 10:34 AM PDT

It happens to me sometimes. If I'm holding pigeon, for example, after a while I start to get anxious and this doesn't happen because the pose is too difficult, I'm actually feeling quite relaxed, but then the anxiety comes and it only stops when I change/end the asana. Has anyone experienced this?

    First Post-Covid Yoga Class!

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 10:32 AM PDT

Last night I had my first yoga class at my local studio since they closed for covid in mid March. It felt so great to take part in that relaxing, meditative workout with other people again! I had tried to practice alone during the lockdown and it was always a good stretch but I am just so grateful to have these classes to look forward to again!

How do people put together their own routines?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:50 AM PDT

Been on and off with yoga the past few months, going to some classes before lockdown started then trying to use apps like down dog and other YouTube vids for routines (usually do some sort of vinyasa flow). However, I struggle with keeping up or adapting to positions they suddenly throw out there quick enough and sometimes want to spend longer in certain positions then others but find constantly getting up and faffing with starting/stopping/rewinding videos to be disruptive to what's meant to be a relaxing experience, so do people put together their own routines (ie on a piece of paper or just mentally) to work through, and are there any tips to get started on doing this?

    Poses you really dislike

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT

I am curious, are there any poses you really dislike? I really don't like 'happy baby', it doesn't make me feel like a happy baby at all.

There are no physical constraints; I just have a negative emotional reaction towards it.

Hip flexors/groin and back knee flexibility with limitations

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 04:42 AM PDT

I have massive flexibility problems with above, which basically makes a huge pile of yoga poses impossible.

I do have some limitations with means I can't do the usual poses to address these. Basically my outer ankle ligaments and muscles are totally rubbished. I can't do lunges to work on the hip flexors and groin area because my front foot and lower leg shake like crazy which makes focusing on the tight areas impossible and the back foot creates a nice nearly 90 degree angle inward on the mat. The muscles to keep that foot straight are kind of missing. This takes the stretch out of the tight areas. All I can stretch a bit is the muscle connecting to the public bone by pulling the back leg towards the bum. But that muscle is tight again every single day. Any other ideas that don't focus so heavily on support of the feet? I'm working on mermaid post, which procives a bit of a stretch in that area, but not enough to actually progress.

Also I have pain at the back of the knee and I suppose it's the sciatic nerve. Flossing by laying on my back doesn't work. I can pull the knee towards my face no problem, but as soon as I start erecting the lower leg the missing hip flexor flexibility and overuse of lower leg muscles due to the injuries kicks in and I can't straighten the leg far enough to feel even a bit of a stretch there. Been trying to do various things standing or kneeling, but so far not much success. Only very minor nerve problems in the gluteus and upper hamstrings left. Thus there's some success but I can't floss the back of the knee effectively and need some ideas.

Just tried my Yogi Bare mat. Best one I’ve used.

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:50 PM PDT

I made a post a while ago about my mats sucking a lot and having me slip from a light amount of moisture. I found a video on YouTube of a lady's collection of mats. She loved her Liforme mat but recommended at mat that was just as good for half the price. It was Yogi Bare.

I just got it today and tried it out. I didn't slip at all. I thought I would because it was smooth but the grip was great. If you want a mat that has a good grip but are on a bit of a budget, get Yogi Bare.

(Lol, kinda sounds like a sponsor. It's not. I'm just really impressed and excited.)
