What part of me is still too tight for splits

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 03:07 AM PDT

I've been working on my flexibility for the last couple of months as I rebuild my strength after a months long illness. Before I was sick I had some very good flexibility and some very poor flexibility. So I could easily touch my toes, lie on my back and touch my legs over my head, get into a hydroblade position when skating etc. Yet my pike position was very poor, my attempts at forward splits were about a foot off the ground, I couldn't lie on my back and raise one leg much past 90˚ while keeping the other straight, my spiral/arabesque was just about parallel with the floor.

As I've worked on my flexibility a lot of that has improved. I can do a good pike, lying on the floor I can now bring one leg in close to my chest while keeping the other straight, My best front splits are about 4" off the floor, my spiral is getting higher. I think my improvement has to do with increased hamstring and back flexibility. But I can't work out exactly what I need to work on to bring my splits lower. When I attempt the splits, my lowest is always with my left leg forward and my right leg back. I feel like i have no problem getting my left leg all the way down but my right hip is too open, so I can't bring my right leg down. I have no problem with keeping my hips square and going all the way down in pigeon pose, but I just can't do it with my front leg all the way out. I don't think my problem is in my quads, so I'm assuming it's my hips? What exercises would be the best to help loosen up and get all the way down?

    Flexibility and rheumatism

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:36 PM PDT

I have rheumatism and I'm very stiff in my joints as you might expect. I do have the green light from my doctor to work on my flexibility, but I don't know where to start.

The biggest issues I have: my wrist, knee and elbow. Because of this I can't do some (yoga) poses or just for a very short time. I do know I can do it, but I need to train.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? I am the least flexible person you will encounter, so keep that in mind haha.

    Issue with Straddle Fold/Pancake Split

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 09:31 AM PDT

For some quick information, I was very flexible a few months ago, but because of a bicycle accident, I had to stop working on my flexibility. I had both of my front splits, and now I'm trying to work towards them again.

I'm having an issue with the pancake split, though. It feels like the muscles that connect to the hip joint start hurting whenever I try to push slightly into that stretch. I used to be able to go pretty far down on this one, so I'm pretty confused as to why this is happening. Has anyone else ever had this problem, and if so, how did you get past it?

    Am I stretching too much?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:48 AM PDT

I have been doing Kung Fu for about 8 years now and I've always been pretty flexible. Here recently I realized that I've never been able to do the splits all the way down the whole time I've been doing martial arts. I started following an intense 20 minute middle split stretching routine every single day for about 3 weeks now. I noticed a lot of improvement as I went from being about 6 inches from the ground to now 1-2 inches. These past few days I've notices my knees and hips are really sore but I'm afraid to miss a day because I might lose progress. Should I be stretching every day of the week or should I be taking days off in between?

    Inflexibility

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 10:32 AM PDT

Hello! I (40M) have become very active in the past 4 years, taking martial arts classes 4 times/wk. Before that, I sat at a desk 10+ hours a day for over 15 years with little to no physical activity. These past 4 years, I have been stretching at least every other day. And for the past 6 months I have been doing fully body stretches (kinda like yoga) daily for over an hour. However, I still have not even been able to do a hands to floor pike, side split, or front split (my butt is still about a 1.5 feet off the floor).

My stretching routines have consisted of eccentric loading, PNF, static, ballistic, and other strengthening/flexibility exercises. I do hours of all the active stretching techniques like lunges, horse stance. I've tried everything. I saw a physical therapist 6 months ago who said I have have terrible hamstring flexibility (50-60 degrees) even after years of training. Per his instruction, I started doing more glut and hip strengthening which has helped my training overall, but done little for my flexibility. Anterior pelvic tilt would be a fitting diagnosis based on my history and hamstring tightness. However, all the tests for it come back negative. My pelvis is aligned correctly.

Is there anyone here who has fought through this with the deficiency that I started with (no exercise for 35 years)? Is this going to take even more years to correct? Should I curb my expectations? Flexibility is crucial to my overall goals, but if it's pointless, I could be spending those hours on other aspects of my martial arts.

    I appreciate any advice!

Please help - flexible front bend (toe touches), incredibly stiff back bend

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 07:21 AM PDT

Hi all, I hope you can give me some tips about my issues! I don't know how to google this specific problem, so any pointers would be appriciated, and if you have some advice from personal experience even better.

I stretch a lot, but sometimes I'm overwhelmed by choice and abundance on sources online. I managed to get close to flat front splits, even got some progress on the pancake split which was incredibly hard. To sum up, the legs are doing fine, even shoudlers are fine, but the back is super inflexible.

I can touch my toes and easily bend forward when standing up. When sitting it's harder as my back is not straight. However, I can't bend backwards for the life of me! In the bridge my arms and legs are 1.5m apart and I'm 1.7m tall :/ When I try scorpio-like pose, my back leg is meters away... I have no arch in my back when I bend backwards, it's ridiculous. I have no medical conditions I know of, no scoliosis or particular back pain. I slouch a lot naturally if I relax and my back hunches when I don't pay attention to it. I try to sit straight and push my shoulders back, chest front, however unatural it seems for me. When I do that I'm straight in the back - where flexy people would get an arch I'm flat.

I do yoga, strength, cycling, aerial arts, I'm very active. I tried various videos for back flexibility/mobility, I've done bridges.. But honestly I'm discouraged and confused and I almost gave up on my back. I see progress in everything else I've done but back is still stiff as a board. As if I were a Barbie doll that doesn't bend that way, feels like I will break if I try. Can someone be so kind to point me to something that help, however slow the progress may be?

    HELP injured myself by stretching!

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 07:30 AM PDT

Hey guys, I've been trying to get my middle splits but I think I overstretched when holding the splits position for too long.

When doing that stretch where you sit on the floor and put one floor out and the other leg in a butterfly position, I used to be able to put my whole chest on the floor. Now, I can only touch my heel because my hip hurts so much.

How can I heal? How long would it take to heal? I run three miles and do 20 mins of Pilates daily; would that interfere w healing, even if my hips don't hurt when doing it? I want to be able to do my front splits again.
