Tight hamstrings hindering my splits ? Scared to overstretch and injure it

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:31 PM PDT

I've been on and off on getting my splits for about 3-4 years now. I got it on my first year then injured my hamstring from splitting with out warm up. After that healed, I've just been on and off with my splits stretching (there were a few times I got it back then regressed)

Throughout this, I find what's hindering me most are my hamstrings. After stretching, they usually feel sore and overstretched. Sometimes, I feel like they even get tighter and regress.

Is it normal for my hamstrings to feel tight and overstretched after stretching or am i doing something wrong? How can I get my hamstrings to be flexible and less tight effectively and efficiently?

Any opinions on Tom Merrick aka bodyweight warrior?

I've recently started doing his flexibility videos on youtube. I find following along with a video much easier and enjoyable than just stretching on my own.

Was wondering if anyone used his videos as well or had any thoughts on him?

How do muscles get stretched in terms of anatomical perspective?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:04 PM PDT

I know this question might seem very basic, but I would like to know whether contracting the opposite side of the stretched muscles would play any role in improving the quality of the stretch. I have read somewhere that when a group of muscles is being stretched, the opposite side of the muscles gets contracted to support the stretch. let's say for example when I stretch my biceps muscles, I would feel my triceps muscles get contracted. Why is it crucial to get support from the opposite side of the muscle? is this true for each and every muscle in the entire human body? Can someone explain how this works in terms of anatomical perspective?

    Thank you!

Any tips for increasing my hamstring flexibility? Have a hyper mobile back and been working on correcting my anterior pelvic tilt. Tight in the lower back. Have a mild scoliosis here. Also lots of rounding in the upper spine... Any advice appreciated. :) looking for 5-10mins stretching per day

Am I going into the right direction in my practice?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:05 PM PDT

So my flexibility level is pretty much non-existent at this point; I can't touch my toes, my belly doesn't touch my thighs in forward fold, I don't have the neccesary shoulder flexibility to do downward dog correct (or perhaps the mind-body connection).

Anyway, I started doing yoga a couple of months ago during through Alomoves, and it went quite well because I learned things about hand placement, surya namaskar A and B, and I am pretty much stuck at this moment. The point is that my flexibility isn't there and I don't know how to progress from this point on.

I know that surya namaskar A and B are the warmups but I suck pretty at them since I don't have the required flexibility to do them exactly right.

Now my solution to this problem is to start doing morning yoga, consistently A's and B's paired with relevant static stretches to work on my flexibility, and every other day flexibility classes from Alomoves. Am I going into the right direction to improve my body and yoga practice if I go this way?
