| How yoga changed my relationship with my body Posted: 15 Sep 2020 07:08 PM PDT Ever since I was 12 or 13 I've suffered from an eating disorder. I would eat very little, if at all and would punish myself by working out vigorously if I binged or ate over my caloric intake for the day. As I gotten older there have been several recoveries and relapses, and while I'm still a work in progress I would like to think I've developed a healthier relationship with my body. However, because of my previous unhealthy habits I have a hatred for cardio. I can't stand it. It makes me feel icky and takes me into a very dark head space. It's a reminder of who I used to be. I gave up on working out and just tried to eat cleaner, until, I found a video for evening yoga. I've never been a flexible person, quite the opposite really, but after that quick 10 minute yoga video I felt so at peace with myself in my body and I began to do yoga everyday. I never understood the hype but I really do now. My body is toning up and becoming more flexible but I feel amazing. I don't feel like I'm torturing every time I get on the mat. I feel content and at peace and I constantly want to exercise. I'm not worried about how many calories I'm burning, only about breathing and improving. Also a shoutout to yoga with kassadra and fight master yoga, they're my favorites atm. [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 15 Sep 2020 01:33 PM PDT I had this yoga teacher. She was amazing. I took a beginners ashtanga class with her for two years and also a vinyasa class with her. I found out that she died earlier today. She was the most beautiful and stunning soul you could come across. Her energy made the room buzz. She made me understand how important yoga is, how important loving each other and looking after our well-being is. Her classes were just amazing. Thank you D for being an inspirational human to so many of us x [link] [comments] |
| When Did You Reach Your Yoga Tipping Point? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:56 PM PDT I think I am at my tipping point, and I have been practicing for seven years. I have practiced on and off during those seven years because of a car accident, two pregnancies and a few personal forks in the road. So maybe it would have happened sooner. But the majority of these past seven years, I have practiced 4-5 days a week at local power yoga studios. You see, I think I have finally figure out what is my limiting factor on all the poses that I have struggled with. I thought if I kept on practicing and pushing myself, that I would improve. I now believe I need to supplement my practice with bodywork.
If you haven't guessed it already, I have no thoracic extension mobility. I believe it because of a car accident that I suffered five years ago and still suffer from daily back pain. And I have scoliosis, which makes matters worse. I am sure you are saying to yourself, "No Duh." I am not saying that I didn't know this was the reason. I just didn't know that I needed to release the thoracic spine with trigger point therapy and massage therapy. I thought if I keep practicing, my mobility will improve. Anyway, I am looking forward to all these poses improving finally, so I can start practicing like a yoga veteran. What have been your yoga tipping points? And what did your yoga practice look like before and after? [link] [comments] |
| How does weight training impact your practice? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 11:57 AM PDT I've been an avid weight lifter for close to 15 years. I'm approaching my 1 year mark of practicing yoga and I've been considering dedicating my time solely to yoga. Because my time is limited, practicing yoga has taken away time from my weight training which I've actually been okay with. For the last several years, my heart really hasn't been in weight training. Seeing it more as a necessity than a passion, I do it at this point because I feel like I need to, whereas 10 years ago, it was because I loved it. Since picking up yoga, I've lost about 20lbs, my flexibility has dramatically increased, and I'm just generally enjoying it more than weight training which has me considering committing fully to yoga. I would like to eventually become an instructor. I'm curious to hear about others experience on how, if at all, weight training has either benefited or been a detriment to your practice? I feel like weight training is limiting my progress in regards to my flexibility. However strength is an important facet of yoga as well, which weight training may be benefiting. My other concern is my muscle tone. While it's superficial, I'm pretty muscular and would prefer to not lose too much mass. Have any of you given up weight lifting entirely and if so, how did it impact your muscle mass? Any input is appreciated. Thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 15 Sep 2020 05:33 PM PDT What are your opinions of Baptiste Power Yoga? I've been practicing and teaching it for a few years and it feels like home to me but I'm interested in other opinions outside of my little Baptiste bubble. I believe the practice is for anyone and everyone.. all poses can be modified, flows can be slowed down. But I was just reading the comments on one of Baron's youtube videos and some were saying he went too fast. I'm not the biggest fan of Baron's actual teaching sometimes tbh but I do love the sequence. And the emphasis on community at all the Baptiste studios I've been to so far. Everyone just seems friendlier and more welcoming, but that could be my own bias. I tried a new non-Baptiste studio today and not a single person talked to me. ANYWAYYY..thoughts? Opinions? Questions? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 15 Sep 2020 04:57 PM PDT I have been enjoying yoga for about 3 years now and have developed a consistent daily practice. Next year, I plan to take an instructor's course, with the hope of personal improvement if nothing else. However, I would like to teach as well if that is practical and I feel sufficiently confident. I understand that yoga teaching is a difficult job market where few people get full time hours; for me, there is the added complication that I work as a snowboard instructor from December-April, so I could work only for the summer, really. It seems to me that the safest bet would be to get a day job at a café or bar in a city of my preference and try get a couple of hours of work per week at a local studio to start with, but I had also wondered if there were any countries or resorts where there is particularly high demand for yoga during the summer, perhaps to help during retreats or at destination studios. For some background information, I am 23, male (I hope this doesn't matter but I could see it being an issue in some places), speak French, German, Spanish and some Italian, and have European citizenship. I would also be open to working for room and board for a time to develop experience. To be clear, this post is not a request for any particular job; it is merely an attempt to gauge whether my goals are viable, and if so where I should be to pursue them. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 15 Sep 2020 04:39 PM PDT Hi everyone! My partner just recently got into yoga and his birthday is coming up soon. I've been looking at purchasing him a Manduka Pro or Lite. I was leaning toward the Lite because it states it is easier to transport; however I'm concerned if the thickness will support his joints. I am also not sure if I should purchase the standard mat or the long mat. I'm not sure if height matters when choosing a mat size, but he's 5'11, has verbally stated he needs a better mat because his joints hurt with the one he uses now, and I know nothing about yoga and mats so I would love to hear your advice or your experiences with the Manduka Pro or Lite. Any advice or experience you have to offer is very appreciated <3 [link] [comments] |
| Good youtube videos for relaxation?[Off-topic] Posted: 15 Sep 2020 04:18 PM PDT Working in a clinic and in charge of picking some short couple minute videos in youtube playlist that will play on tv. Wanted some music to help people relax. Will probably use them for when I do yoga at home to. Just need some peaceful background music video recommendations. Preferably short, with interesting background pictures or aerial shots. Anybody use something like this when they do yoga? [link] [comments] |
| What to do about really tight hamstrings and a anterior pelvic tilt? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 02:12 PM PDT So a little back story i tore my acl almost 2 years ago and every since my hamstrings have been extremely tight for both legs not just my injured one. I also have gotten a pretty noticeable anterior pelvic tilt from sitting i guess over the years. The problem is that i heard that stretching your hamstrings with a ATP can make your situation worse so i've stopped stretching them. Is there anything yoga wise or maybe a stretching technique i can do to maybe not make my hamstrings as tight and might help my ATP problem? thanks [link] [comments] |
| Yoga Nidra! A personal cure for our times. Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:32 AM PDT Has anyone here ever tried Yoga Nidra? Are you familiar with it at all? Yoga Nidra is a beautiful and powerful practice to deeply relax the body, mind, and unconscious layers. It's a technique to consciously delve into your mind, soothe any anxieties that linger below the surface, and even plant the seed of intention within your mind to manifest your desires. I ask and bring this up, because I am starting online Yoga Nidra classes and am mainly curious who out there has heard of it, has ever tried it, what your experiences were with it, and if you continue to have interest in it. Let me separate those questions. Have you ever tried Yoga Nidra? What were your experiences with it? Do you still have interest to practice? [link] [comments] |

| Hip cramping and tingling in seated forward folds - any advice? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 05:16 AM PDT Hi there, I am a 26 year old female, who is a healthy weight and moderately active, and have been doing yoga once or twice a week for the last six months. For as long as I can remember (since being about 10/11) I have had awful pain from my glutes and hips, which doctors and physios put down to piriformis syndrome. I was given stretches and strength building exercises to help, bit despite this the pain has never gone away. The pain is now in both legs, which is aggravated by sitting and routinely sends pins and needles into my feet. Since starting my practice, it's become particularly prevalent to how un-stretchy I am. Sitting forward folds, pigeon pose and the pose where you sit with your legs spread out are nearly impossible due to tingling/cramping in my hips. It's a really unpleasant experience and I'd love to get rid of it so I can improve my practice and get better at the poses. Can anyone suggest any stretches or poses which they think might be beneficial or should I just accept my body may always be a bit tight and sore in some places? Thanks very much in advance!
