    Some Curiosities from Mindfulness Activities

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 10:40 AM PDT

Hello friends, I have been doing yoga for quite some time myself, but have recently begun to have some burning curiosities about our community! If you are willing to, please answer any (and preferably all) of the questions below.

    1. What mindfulness strategies have you tried? What is your go-to (and why)? How often do you practice?
    2. Why do you attempt mindfulness?
    3. Outside of work, eating, and sleeping - where does mindfulness rank in your weekly activity spend (money or time)? What ranks above it (what activities do you engage in more)?
    4. Tell me about your yoga practice. Do you struggle with anything before, during, or after?
    5. If you could choose between doing yoga at the place you typically do yoga and doing yoga in a peaceful nature environment with no bugs or distractions, which would you choose? How far would you be willing to drive to do yoga there 2-4 times a week? What about every day? Is there anything you would need to make that experience more successful?
    6. How have you created or joined a community based around mindfulness?

    Help for an "sub-beginner"

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 07:46 AM PDT

I have some very real problems with muscle stiffness and soreness, my feet point outwards naturally and I'm a bigger guy so I get a lot of tension in my calf muscles. I used to suffer really bad cramping over night but I've been doing daily stretches for the last year and that has really helped.

My girlfriend is really into yoga and has been suggesting I give it a go for a while and now that the gyms are back open I thought I'd give it a try.

I've been trying to get into yoga for about a month now, weekly practice at the gym and trying some of the videos online however I'm finding all the beginners videos I can find well above my level which means that I'm not noticing any improvement on a week to week basis either. The complete lack of improvement, or positive benefits from the effort I've put in have left me very demoralised.

To give an idea of the issues I'm having I've tried using this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7AYKMP6rOE

However it I'm finding I can't follow the terminology in this and the exercises range from incredibly difficult to completely impossible, I think there is either something I am missing or is missing from the video.

To give an idea of the issues I'm having with that particular video:

I have no idea what is meant by "integrity" when it comes to breathing and posture.
I have no idea what a hip point is.
I keep nearly falling over during the warrior pose bit, and there's no mention of balance so I must be doing something wrong but there's no explanation as to what that could be it's just assumed that I will somehow know.
The instructions for the downward dog bit are super unclear, "listen to your body" well my legs are far to tight to do this and my arms are telling me they are going to drop me on my face so I guess my body is telling me that I shouldn't be trying yoga at all 😂.
I can't walk my hands up on to my thighs during the kneeling bit so how am I supposed to move my arms around without falling on my face.
At one point she says knit your lower ribcage together, I genuinely couldn't have less of an idea what this means.

I feel like yoga would be really useful as I don't have much flexibility but every "beginners" video I can find seems to require a base level of flexibility and knowledge that I just don't have.

I understand there are advantages to yoga such as feeling relaxed and energised but every "beginners" video makes me feel like an unfit idiot, which is very frustrating and as I do it in the mornings before work is having a knock on effect on my overall stress levels.

I would love if someone could point me in the direction of some videos that are useful to someone who is at a "sub-beginner" level

    Thank you

    Question about meditation

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 06:46 AM PDT

I was at my Aunt's place on Sunday and we got to talking about life and stuff.

I mentioned to her that I started meditation and recently felt my third eye opening.

I quickly regretted saying that because she immediately went on a small Christian faith rant. She told me that I should be careful and that is very dangerous. The spiritual realm is not the place to be so she says.

Can you guys please tell me your thoughts as well as anything factual? Is she being reasonable or is she just ignorant/uneducated?

    What the hell.

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 04:18 AM PDT

I was doing my 30 day challenge and it wasn't going great. I had to take some time (a week) off, due to being physically and mentally quite ill from the events that were dominating my life at the time. Those events are finally over, but now, I've got a new problem.

Any time I go to do yoga, I have some amount of pain in my body that prevents me from doing it. I don't know why, I don't know how. It just happens. Today alone, I woke up at 5:30 to do yoga. Everything was fine until I stood up, and my knee was just hurting like all hell. Its to the extent that I don't think its a good idea to be doing anything on it..

What is even going on? How do I deal with this? I really want to get back to practicing, but it seems like I just have injuries.
