I dream way more since I started yoga

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 03:20 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm very new to yoga practice. I have some small experience I wanna share and to see if it is a thing for other people too.

I'm a 25 year old guy, I used to do home muscle workout and cardio and stuff. However I honestly do not enjoy them AT ALL. I took a small break from that and started to try yoga out two weeks ago. Honestly I love it, wish I could discover it earlier in my life lol.

Little backstory, I'm that kinda person whose rarely ever dream. Even if I dream maybe cause stress or something, I can never recall anything from any of my dream. My whole family are those vivid dreamer and can remember lot of details from their dreams which I never understood how they managed to do that.

Since starting yoga two weeks ago, I realised I almost dream ever night. I think few of them were lucid dreams, even though I still can't actually remember any of my dreams. Just the idea of now I dream more in my sleep is quite exciting for me.

I'm just curious about if other people have a similar experience.

Very thrilled to learn more and get tiny bit better at yoga one day at a time!

How rigorously should I be following prompts to parallel my feet if I am naturally slightly duckfooted?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 09:58 AM PDT

Should I be correcting my foot placement over time or is this just a natural part of my build?

For warrior I have no problem turning the back foot in, but for things like mountain, or some of the more balance heavy standing poses I find it easier to maintain the pose if I turn the dominant foot slightly out (maybe 15 degrees) out (or both feet)

Is this a crutch/correction moment or a listen to my body moment?

Also, does foot position matter less if I am mindful of the positioning of thigh and hip socket?

    Thank you for your replies!

This is my first post here, I apologise if this is breaking any rules, I tried searching but couldn't find anything.

Is anyone still going to in person yoga classes during the pandemic?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 03:23 PM PDT

Are you still attending classes but taking precautions?

I SO miss going to yoga. Practicing at home just isn't the same. I haven't been going because I see my family most weekends and I don't want to risk carrying Covid and getting someone sick. I'm tempted to ask for a break from weekend gatherings until the holidays so I can go back to in person classes, but I feel so guilty and irresponsible considering that idea.

    Thoughts?

Resource Thread for Learning About Cultural Appropriation in Western Yoga

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I am hoping to create a "megathread" of resources for learning about cultural appropriation, whitewashing, decolonization, etc. in western yoga. Please contribute any resources you have found useful!

I have recently been reflecting on my yoga practice and the ways in which it might be contributing to whitewashing, cultural appropriation, or harming others. I have been doing some research and thought I would share in case anyone else is going through the same reflections, and I would love if you would post any articles/books/etc. that you have found helpful in exploring these topics! I feel I am especially lacking in the history of yoga, and would love any book recs you have.

I also want to emphasize that I am not trying to say white people shouldn't practice yoga, I just personally want to practice yoga in a way that is respectful to its roots and doesn't harm others. I have seen other people comment on this sub with that same sentiment, and am hoping to create a space for us to share resources.

Here's what I have found (partially thanks to the help of other users in this sub):

    Articles

Yoga Journal "What's the Difference Between Cultural Appropriation and Cultural Appreciation?"

Self "Yoga in America Often Exploits My Culture—but You May Not Even Realize It"

Anti-Racism Daily on spiritual bypassing in western yoga

    Blogs

Dr. Rumya Putcha's blog Namaste Nation: Orientalism and Yoga in the 21st Century

    Susanna Barkataki:

"How to Decolonize Your Yoga Practice"

"How to Practice Yoga Without Appropriating It"

"Namaste- 60+ Options for Confidently Ending Your Yoga Class"

    Yoga Newbie-online classes

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 01:04 PM PDT

Hi! I've been doing yoga on and off for a long time, and would like to start a daily practice. I would like to do an online class (because of Covid) but can't seem to find a good online service for it. I want something that I can gain progress from and build myself up to an expert level. But I am unable to find a class that has a structure that can help me get there. Some of the class feel very all over the place and aren't a practice that feels like I can move forward in. Any idea? I tried Gaia, but it didn't offer any courses that would be what I want. Open to suggestions.

What is your opinion on this? I have really tight legs and I don’t know if I should stretch them. Yoga makes me want to do that because I see everyone being stretchy af

    Back surgery and Yoga practice

    Posted: 09 Oct 2020 03:59 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone.

I'd been practising Ashtanga for 4 years and absolutely loving it. Then had emergency back surgery on a ruptured disk in my spine, (L4/5) getting back to yoga post op has been a painful struggle. I've been considering moving away from Ashtanga and trying a softer style of yoga, but I have a deep love of it, so ideally I want to stay.

My surgeon has advised me to not bend forward, so would that mean yoga is out of the question. 🤔

I'm currently working on gentle strengthening at the gym which is helping.

Has anyone been through similar? Has your daily practice still been possible? Or caused more problems.

Just hoping to get some advice/reassurance.

    Thank you ☺️
