Is it normal for my flexibility to vary a lot each day?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:44 AM PST

    Hey guys!

So I've always been very active but also supeeerrrrr not flexible and I've been stretching seriously for the past two or three months (mainly started because my posture was awful and I had chronic neck pain) and my progress has been good but also very weird...I keep following this pattern where it seems like I am barely making any progress and then one day all of a sudden I gain a ton of flexibility out of nowhere and I maintain this for a couple of days and then my new flexibility disappears all of a sudden. Overall, I'm definitely still progressing as my "off days" are becoming "less bad" but it's a little demoralizing especially because my pain returns when my flexibility is not as good. Is this normal? Will my flexibility eventually even out so that its there every day? I realize I'm still very new to this and I'm definitely in it for the long haul so I can be patient but I would rather know sooner rather than later if I am doing something wrong so that I can adjust my routine/habits. Right now I stretch lightly/do mobility work for 40 mins every morning and stretch quite hard twice a week after my lower body workouts. I also do very light stretching each night for a few minutes. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows anything about this type of progress or if they've had a similar experience as it could be quite reassuring.

    Thanks!

Top 5 "bang for your buck" exercises

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 06:15 PM PST

    Hey all!

21M here. I've been working out off and on for the past few years, but due to bad posture habits and height (6'8, with short legs and a really long torso), I've got not good but not great posture, terrible flexibility (lying on the floor, my legs can lift up straight to about a 60-80 degree angle) and a bit of lower back pain. I work on my laptop most days, but am generally active fixing things, building things, going for walks etc.

My main issues are slightly rounded shoulders, anterior pelvic tilt, and very tight muscles all around my body.

After my daily 30 minute run, I'd like to incorporate some stretching/movements to help sort this out. I'll have trouble sticking to it long-term if it's not simple (but will likely progress onto a longer routine once I see the benefits). Here's my current, rough "routine":

    • Deadlift, low weight and good form.
    • Hang from the bar for about a minute a few times. I've also experimented with hanging from my knees on the bar.
    • Stretch hamstrings on the bed. Sitting upright, stretching each leg individually.
    • Lie on a long foam roller, retracting my scapula and relaxing everything for a few minutes.
    • I also have a lacrosse ball arriving in three days, which I'll use to work out kinks in my upper back.
    • This is all whilst using a standing desk and paying attention to my posture throughout the day.

Can you recommend any top "bang for your buck" exercises? In other words, if you could pick 5 exercises for mobility/flexibility/health, what would you recommend?

I understand that the beginner's routine is the place to go, but I know I won't have enough motivation to stick to it long-term.

    Cheers!
    Josh

    Even more basic beginning routines?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:23 AM PST

I am terribly inflexible. I want to get better so i can trim my own toenails without struggle, scratch the itch on my back, and avoid injury in my still reasonably active lifestyle (bicycling, backpacking, paragliding, EUC). Full lotus in comfort? A dream, but would be cool. Surprisingly or not, I'm not in pain.

I'm 54 and have never been flexible. I have somewhat severe anxiety associated with group physical activities so have quit 3 yoga classes over the decades after the first session, and even videos of group sessions make me uneasy.

The beginner exercises linked at top of forum are quite demoralizing for me where I am now. I cannot sit on the ground with anything close to an upright back: to straighten it requires leaning back to almost 45°. I can't lift my leg onto a chair without arching my back and swiveling hips out of square. This generally means that holding any of the poses presented requires considerable (usually abdominal) exertion because gravity is working against me, pulling me out of the pose instead of further into it, and preventing relaxed breathing. Cramps set in halfway through the holds.

Can anybody recommend beginning resources appropriate to people who can't perform most of the usual beginner exercises properly?

Should you relax your muscles on the exhale when stretching?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 12:33 PM PST

I find it feels weird when I try to keep a muscle stretched when breathing out specifically when performing reverse kegels. Should I relax on the exhale and push out gently on the inhale? If so how am I supposed to get a long duration stretch for this? Thanks

    Cracks and bops when Streching

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 08:35 PM PST

I have always been a pretty flexible, athletic person, but I started doing the dynamic streching routine in one of the guides, and I hear cracks all over my body. They don't really hurt or affect me in any way, but will they become a problem in the future.
